Fun fact, Anker first announced this one on July 25, 2022 alongside a bunch of other GaNPrime adaptors (65W, 100W power strip, 120W, 150W), the 737 PowerCore 24K, etc. But unlike all those other devices, they didn't start taking pre-orders of this 240W beast until August 1, 2023. So, people spent over a year speculating about the power split and that it had to be a desktop charger due to the size, since, as you mentioned, Anker didn't want to show the permanently attached power cord. At least it was worth the wait.

Good review. It's interesting you mention the "Won't buy if..." list. I don't mind the USB-A port, and many devices still ship with a USB-A cable. Those that need USB-C there can use an adapter. But... there's 2 things that are non-negotiable with adapters of this capacity and size: 1.) it *MUST* support a grounding pin, and not a fake one at the end of the cable with no wire attached to it, and 2.) it *MUST* have a detachable cable from the main body of the charger/adapter. Those that don't, are simply not 'travel' adapters (I'm looking at you, Baseus! 👀). If you use these, non-grounded adapters on foreign voltage or with converters, they will run SCORCHINGLY hot. 🔥 Anker made a big mistake with their 6-in-1 charger by not providing replacement cables, nor non-US wall cables with that devices, so it remains a proprietary, US-only charger that can't really be used outside the US. Another 'travel' charger that only works if you travel in the US.
@Gengh1311 ай бұрын
I would like to ask about 1), I have encountered a lot of places with connected but floating ground so the current of all the parallel Y capacitors can shock you slightly so in those cases I would prefer not to have the ground of the usb connected to that conductor.
@nich-ko6si11 ай бұрын
One more thing, there are tons of accessories that HAVE a USB C port, but can’t charge with a two sided USB C cable because they don’t have a PD negotiable.
@snh422811 ай бұрын
Re #1 and the US only charger thing, Japan doesn't use the three prong plug with the ground, so if it had that, it would be much more difficult to use here.
@AllThingsOnePlace11 ай бұрын
This is where that leakage test matters... Low leakage is important with a two prong supply, and if using in Japan basically mandatory. In terms of getting hotter, this one will actually be cooler on 230V. As most of them should be. It should be hotter in Japan though. Low voltage, means lots of current.

OS-CON is an aluminum solid capacitor with high conductive polymer. OS-CON acquires low Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR), excellent noise reduction capability and frequency characteristics. In addition, OS-CON has a long life span and its ESR has little change even at low temperatures since the electrolyte is solid.

Hey, so following your 2024 recommendations, I asked my friend who lives in the States to help me order this on Amazon Black Friday sale but then I found out about the non-removable cable. Which is bad enough, but then I live in Singapore, so I’ll need an adapter for it. The Satechi 165W on the other hand has removable cable, so I can just replace it with a similar power cable but with a UK plug. Should I beg my friend to cancel the order and get the Satechi instead, or do you think the Anker 240W is so much better that those issues are worth suffering (just put a permanent travel adapter)? Keep in mind both are currently going for 83.99 USD. Alternately, I can buy the UK pin version of the Anker locally, but it costs a whopping 111 USD in comparison. 😅
@AllThingsOnePlaceАй бұрын
Hello, I missed the boat on answering this, yeah, it would be nice if they sold this with a non-fixed cord, oh, they do, but it's the new adapter and it sucks at being a power supply, haha. The Satechi is not too friendly with 240V, it works fine, actually efficiency is top tier, but the leakage is a little on the high side and the idle power consumption is high.

The 140W Laptop port has issues with some cables. It will occasionally fail to read the eMarker of the cable and limit power to 60W. For some cables it's unable to read the eMarker ever and is always limited to 60W. Try a JSAUX 100W right angle USB-C cable, it will only work at 60W. It occasionally glitches with a USB-IF certified Plugable cable. I've also confirmed the issue with a ChargerLab KM003C without any cable using eMarker emulation. Occasionally it will only show 60W of 140W. I used it for a bit before getting annoyed by the glitch and returned it. There are other reviews on Amazon that say the same.

Stupid question, I have a powerstrip, Anker 240W or 4 Amazon 65W USBC ? The Anker has more modes? Great Videos, thanks for your content.
@AllThingsOnePlace10 ай бұрын
That's not a stupid question. The Anker does have more modes but the real benefit is energy savings at that point. The issue is at that wattage level, lacking power factor correction, PFC, is going to cost you in terms of current and extra power usage with a low power quality versus a high power quality device. You will use about 7-10% more energy with 4 - 65W adapters versus the one 240W adapter or three 100 watt adapters with PFC. The losses from one device do not add, they increase by a power of 2, so increasing devices of lower power quality creates a pretty sizable amount of power loss. No one wants to talk about this since everyone is focused on one device. On a one device scale, it barely matters at 65W.

Just a quick heads up about the Anker A2229 I had 2 units bought in 2 different years (2020 and 2022) and both suffered the same problem: The plastic part around the side metallic connector breaks after a time. Both chargers were never under sun or intesne heat. I think the plastic just fail after a certain time because of the pressure of the "spring" inside. (It is more a metal piece that acts like a spring)
@AllThingsOnePlace7 ай бұрын
hmmm, I think that's the one I'm using still. But I rarely remove it, It just sits in the socket all the time. I think that kind of failure mode will be common across a lot of these. The Belkin, which I still need to finish the teardown video of, has a more metal connection for the end piece though so those may not fail in that way.

@rainmannoodles22 күн бұрын
Agree 100%. So many devices use 12V and being able to use a trigger cable to supply that from a USB-C port is super convenient. It’s frustrating that the only mode that is commonly being removed is the one that was the most useful…

Awesome review! Quick question, I have a ESR Cryoboost 3-in-1, and when I use this Anker Desktop Charger connected with an Anker 100w usb-c cable to it, along with my iPhone 15 pro max and Apple Watch Ultra 2 simultaneously, the Apple Watch charges no problem, iPhone charges reeeeally slowly, and it doesn’t reach 100% after a full night charging. Why does this happen? Any recommendation?
@AllThingsOnePlace6 ай бұрын
hmmm, not sure. It sounds like there is a negotiation issue where it isn't getting the PD voltage to charge at a higher rate.
@wiki30656 ай бұрын
@@AllThingsOnePlace exactly, there seems to be not enough energy negotiation demand from the ESR to the Anker charger for it to supply the correct power output the ESR device needs. So, the only solution that fits is to dumb down the other end and plug it into a 30w standard charger.

I do wonder why Anker keeps choosing hardwired cables for recent designs. Is it a packaging thing? Designing it to be so compact that there's very little space left for a standard IEC port? Some of their earlier laptop power supplies did have a standard AC connector and they were fine.
@AllThingsOnePlace10 ай бұрын
Yeah, in this case, I feel like the marketing team designed the box then said make it fit in here. Anker does tend to absolutely cram these things so there's no wasted space. A socket inclusive of the design would've make the physical casing larger. It's a nearly 1 kg brick, people don't care if it's 20 mm longer so it gain an interchangeable socket.
@alx9r11 ай бұрын
I hard pass on any device with non-removable cable. USB-C was designed to finally solve the problems of non-removable cables…and Anker insists on reintroducing those problems on their flagship USB-C adapters. I’m a bit surprised that Anker is so successful yet no Anker part has ever made it into any of my designs.

If power adapter using eu plug instead of uk plug would it be make it difference on the data you provide?

The plug makes no difference at these power levels. The supplied power does. But on select devices, generally ones that perform at least moderately well, I test both voltage standards for consumer devices.

Annoyed they're still omitting 12V from these. I know it's optional in the spec, but it's the most common voltage I want to generate using a PD trigger to replace some crappy proprietary 12V supply with a simple USB C PD cable.

Sadly I can't get it in Australia. The ugreen 200w charger is the closest equivalent. All chargers need a USB A Port because some usb c devices won't charge on a c-to-c cable but charge fine on a usb a to c, so I guess those people (who want only usb c chargers) are going to be throwing out a lot of electronics needlessly, particularly Bluetooth earbuds

Yeah, or make a 'compatibility' cable. USB cable with some resistors to allow it to deliver power to a 'dumb' USB A device. But yeah, I agree that one USB A port is still a good idea.

What is the best way to find out wether a charger works for my work laptop? (It's HP...)
@AllThingsOnePlace10 ай бұрын
It's unfortunately not as easy as it should be. One way would be if it came with a charger, is that charger USB C, does that USB C charger say what voltage and current it supplies, they usually have to write this on the casing. Another thing to check is if the laptop has a usb c port labeled as accepting power or near a barrel plug power input. My laptop has the usb c near the barrel plug port, it does support power in, hp. One option is just try it and see if it works. Another is a usb c to barrel adapter.

@AllThingsOnePlace10 ай бұрын
haha, yeah, I'm trying, sorry for the long rant, you don't have to read it, thanks for the comment! I guess the issue is trying to make everyone happy is an impossibility. So, I try to think of all aspects and incorporate a little too much and that means nothing will ever meet the impossible criteria of being the perfect power adapter, charging a phone perfectly and also being able to deliver power to every laptop you own at once, with every possible USB mode and then people fight about USB A or no USB A. In terms of my videos this one is about as positive as they get. It isn't that I see the dark side or am being negative on purpose, it's that I have a foot in reality and know what is and isn't possible and that these have to be mass produced products that make profit. This product generally meets many criteria people ask for. It is expensive and heavy but it's also a lot of watts, you can't cheat physics so the weight is there for a reason. Anyway, yeah, I'm on a bit of a break now while I try to figure out how to spin these in a more light hearted way, or what videos to make instead because no one is interested in power adapters (according to yt stats). I still have to cover the data but essentially can't provide commentary if it isn't a positive result. One option is, make the videos shorter but more machine like... Here it is, unbox it, specs, data table, plot comparisons, end. Rinse and repeat. Hopefully, can get more videos out that way. They won't be better. Time is also an issue. This is very much part time, it makes no money, it costs substantial money, and it chews time. It'll never make money, I know that, but it'd be nice if the channel at least continued to grow, but it's not doing that anymore either. Basically losing subs as fast as I gain them, and views, watch time, CTR, impressions are all down, way down. Option 2, means time to stop and make something else. The audience has voted with views and they aren't interested anymore. So, what do I make instead? I'm stuck on option 2, and can't figure it out.
@MArca-hj3xv10 ай бұрын
@AllThingsOnePlace The problem is that you'll get one-time watchers who want to decide on a product and move on. You're the only channel that puts out comprehensive videos about powerbanks and power supplies that I could find. That means you did find a gap. I think maybe make the videos a bit more palatable, ask the audience to subscribe, after all it's hard work and make the videos a bit click baity. Anker 737 - 5 reasons not to buy. Yes clickbait is annoying but it works. Once I see the effort you put into the video and I get value out of it, I forgive the clickbait. I hope that makes sense.
