Just as a side note the ball return I filmed was not functioning how it should the one on the other side worked as it is suppose to, once it hits that ring its suppose to stop then slowly enter the area with the other balls so they dont smack into each other...Also I didn't mention it in the video but half the balls here are rubber...

My dad used to be a pinsetter but he had a machine helping him. The machine set the pins, but all he did was load the table and then it would set the pins. Kind of like an 8270 with no pin elevator or pin wheel.

@Panhandler matt; Right we didn't stand inside but on the top side... When some asshole threw the ball so hard the pins would fly out of the box they would get shit from the owner and he had them give us double time… which we would spend it all on pop and candy bars eh… Üü

@@RBR_SPY21 Thank you for you kind words - Aboard USS Louisville CA 28 Heavy Cruiser he witnessed (52) sailors along with Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler buried at sea due to (3) kamikaze hits in the Pacific. The Louisville had (13) battlestars and in 2015 a main battery 8 inch 55 caliber gun turret (knocked out of commision by a kamikaze and a 500 lb bomb and gas ) was found in the Nevada Desert used as a testing dectector for nuclear bombs. There is a Y-tube of the turret in desert and also a video showing the kamikaze hitting the turret with flames going above the 120 foot tripod superstruture. My dad lived a great life and I asked him many questions and even in his 90's he knew dates and places and names like yesterday. Take care - you have an interesting subject!

This is the kind of bowling alley I wouldn't mind owning someday. I've been bowling off and on for a little over forty years. The good thing about this one is the fact you don't have mechanical problems that modern bowling alleys have.

We sadly lost a near 100 year old bowling alley in Baltimore not to long ago. The Patterson Bowling Lanes were in the Fells Point neighborhood, and were duckpins lanes that had been opened since the mid 1920s. Babe Ruth had bowled there, among other noteworthy people. I grew up around the corner from there and went to the bowling alley countless numbers of times. It closed at the end of 2022/beginning of 2023 and is being torn down, along with a bank on the same plot of land to make luxury condos/apartments. Update: The Patterson WILL stay a partial bowling alley. The new owners are converting it to mixed use, keeping 4-6 lanes for duckpin bowling.

Babe Ruth was on the list of famous people who stayed at Rohman's Inn (or at least drank at the bar) where the bowling alley in the video is. Maybe he bowled there too?

Southport Lanes in Chicago closed last year. They had four lanes with no pinsetters. A local candlepin bowler brought his own pins. So when you see a center with no pinsetters keep in mind, you can bring your own duckpins, candlepins, five pins, ninepins, whatever. Thanks for posting.

The bowling alley in my hometown does not have an automatic pinsetter, so they hire people to do the job, just like this one. The difference is that they use small balls and it has a "pinsetter area", if you will. They have a place to sit, above the pins, and it has green and red lightbulbs that the pinsetters turn on when they are ready for you to throw the ball. I spent my entire childhood playing there, sometimes even having to set the pins myself. It was somehow exciting. Now I live in the city and it's all about automatic pinsetters, obviously. I'm from Argentina.

When I was young in the 1950’s and early 1960’s there still were a few bowling alleys that had manual pin setters that the alley had boys or men do the work. I remember that ring at the end of the return that slowed the ball back to the rack of balls. Eventually most of these old alleys either updated with automatic pin setters or went out of business. Now most blowing centers even have automatic scoring systems that older players like my father thought it took another part of the game away. But it is nice to see some one is keeping old style bowling alive.

I used to set pins at the local YMCA for 50 cents a game in the 1960's. There was always some wise guy that would throw another ball while you were setting up the next frame of pins. Just like the video, you perched behind the pins with your feet dangling down. Of course, there was no oiling the lanes and you had to pick up the ball and put it on the ball return rails.

Interesting bit of history. I live in Massachusetts which isn't far and we had candle pin growing up. They just recently converted half their lanes to string pin which is 10 pin with strings at the top.
