Almost a DISASTER | Dovetail Jewelry Box Build

This jewelry box took me 80 hours to build and contains 64 hand cut mitered, half-blind, and through dovetails. All dovetail joinery is cut completely by hand, and much of the other joinery is hand cut as well. I built it for my wife for Valentines day.
During the glue up of this box, I accidentally assembled the carcass in the wrong order, leaving me with a pin board as the fourth piece. While frantically trying to disassemble the quickly-drying glue joints, I snapped the side wall of this box in half along the grain. I had spent two weeks working up to this point. Thanks to some quick thinking I was able to perfectly repair the joint. In the final box, the broken seam is 100% completely invisible.
The outer carcass is made of one piece of solid walnut, with mitered dovetails visible from the front and back for a more modern look. The back panel is also solid walnut from the same log, and it floats in a groove. It is only glued in the central points to allow for expansion and contraction. The drawer dividers are walnut and fit in dados cut on the router table.
The drawers have continuous grain walnut fronts with half blind dovetails. The drawer sides are maple, the backs are cherry, and the bottoms are maple veneered plywood. The custom drawer dividers are made of walnut and can be removed.
The two vertical drawers house 20 necklaces (5 on each side of each drawer, as the bottom panel actually fits in the middle of the drawer). The necklaces hang on grooved walnut dowels coated with a rubberized substance to give more grip. The bottom of the necklaces pool in custom walnut slots.
The drawer stops are made of maple and fit into stopped holes made with two different sized forstener bits. They are of course removable if the drawers ever need to be removed.
Every surface is finished with multiple coats of spray lacquer, buffed to a glass smooth finish.
The hardware is brass and is all made by Brusso. The feet are item "JB-755" (www.brusso.com/jb-755-box-feet/) and the knobs are item "MC-428" (www.brusso.com/mc-428/).
The dimensions of the box are as follows: 10" wide, 7" tall, 6 3/4" deep. Outer walls 7/16" thick. Drawer dividers 1/4" thick. Vertical drawers 1 1/2" wide. Horizontal drawers 1 1/4" tall. Drawer fronts 1/2" thick. Drawer sides 1/4" thick.

And this is why you should use liquid hide glue. Especially when working with dovetail joinery. After your mistake, you would have spritzed a little warm water on the joint and gently undone the joints without pounding it with a mallet. Then you would have taken a break and come back relaxed, applied some warm water on the old glue and put new glue on top, with no need to remove the old glue (it sticks to itself, unlike other glues). And you would have saved a lot of trouble sanding away the squeeze out mess, because it doesn't interfere with finishes. Order yourself some Old Brown Glue and you'll never feel glue-up anxiety again. Great video and great build!

I noticed the hockey tape on your clamps, which confirms that we know the same person who teaches these excellent methods, and more importantly the ways of thinking about the work. In the end, this way of looking at the work migrates into how we look at so much beyond just woodworking. At some point we come to understanding that there is very little we can't fix or can't make, and that realization allows us to approach both the work and life with a much healthier attitude. Or at least that's what it's done for me. Merry Christmas!

Beautiful piece, absolutely lovely. I am sure that neither you nor your wife will ever forget the time and circumstances around the making and giving of this cabinet. Thank you for sharing the process with us. And for reminding me just how stressful a glue-up can be!

Fantastic work ! I love the fact that you don't hide the mistakes, and how you fix them, the truth is the proof of a real good woodworker. Thanks for this share and congrats for this relaxing video without boring music and useless words, tools noises are a music !
