I'm exactly like Robert Groves and who is walking the same pathway. I too am amazed at Nick's professionalism and skill set. Yes he does has some big $$ equipment (he is a Pro) but he also has much the same gear that we have already in our smaller wood shops. Although I have been wood working for several decades, I feel I have taken a quantum leap in my skill set recently thanks to Pro experts like Nick who are putting in so much at his expense into making these YT's for us to enjoy and learn from. I'm now 1 of Nick's Patreons - least I can do to support this work. I very much doubt that I will acquire the fabulous Artistic flare Nick has - it's hard to learn that, but we can sit back and appreciate/ enjoy this side of his craft.

I think the ordinary wooden box is still a test of a craftman's skill. You need all the same skills you use to create your larger pieces. And the result? Something that is intriguing still. I love the styling reminiscent of Moderne, and the move away from the expected in the joinery. The draws with the dowels instead of dovetails - which would weaken the design theme. I love how that choice echoes the draw pulls, and their recess, and is carried through the whole piece. Repetition is legitimation of a theme, and your understanding of how to execute a design to communicate to the observer what you want is a delight. Bravo.

I love the way you keep your workshop so clean. Almost all your cutting and sanding machines have vacuum attachments on it. Must be a joy to start and end the day without having to clean up after yourself that much. And not to mention the health benefits of not inhaling the dust. The box is beautifully made. From one Nick to another, I prefer this style of video. I've been watching your videos for years and, in my mind, you were an artist who uses wood as your medium. The new commentary style brings a level of human fallibility, but there are enough makers who provide that style of imperfect appeal (I'm sure we all follow that same channels). In my mind, I had you elevated with the channels like New Yorkshire Workshop, This is My Alaska, and Doucette and Wolfe. Btw, I'm using this particular video as a template for a jewelry box build right now!

As a professional video producer and amateur woodworker, I love the amount of craft you put into both. Most videos on KZbin are overlit with "stadium lighting". Yours is much more restrained. The light isn't wasted on the background walls. However, a 3/4 backlight opposite the keylight would provide an edge, and go a long way to separating you and your work from the background. I think that would answer the negative comments that it was too dark or hard to see quite well. Overall, the shooting is excellent, and I love that you don't waste our time with lame jokes and smash cuts to irrelevent stock footage.

Really nice build. I like the attention to both drawer fronts being off the same plank so the grain is contiguous when closed. Nick's shop is worth more than a typical house in a reasonably nice neighborhood. Reminds of the NYW days with Norm, telling us all we need is a little know-how, ingenuity, planning and hard work (and a few hundred K in shop, tools, and supplies never hurts either). I still laugh out loud when I recall him saying, "Now we need to plane this desktop. Normally this would be quite a challenge but with our new 6-foot-wide planer it's done in no time at all." Yeah, Norm. no kidding. Awesome work, The design and finish are stellar.

Immaculate craftsmanship and such a unique, modern design. A+ I like the lighting overall, it matches your brand being a little on the darker side with the foreground lit separated from the darker ambient background. Only thing I would say is make sure you position your light in the right spot when working with metals, as metallic surfaces are particularly finicky to light well. Just move it off to the side opposite of the direction your camera is pointing until the metal surface doesn't reflect as much light and it will look more clear.

Just before 5min, he's spraying a CA glue accelerator. Makes CA glue cure almost instantly. A bit later (5:30ish) the spray can is likely a clear lacquer that will stop the copper from tarnishing.
