Alfa Romeo? No Problem!

Heelo guys! Complete teardown to understand what happened to this engine, how it suffered with the belt failure and what its strengths are! Complete analysis of all components from heads to block and checking internal components.
This motor is not available for sale because it is still very useful because it withstood so well a catastrophic failure of the belt.
Maintenance is king on these and all engines, having always had a good maintenance of antifreeze and engine oil its good condition is evident.
Belt failure happened, once again, due to lack of verification and maintenance: Failure of the alternator dynamic pulley, power steering oil leakage\humidity onto the dynamic tensioner and finally the failure of the tensioner that led to the deviation and destruction of the accessories belt. Debris that lodged in the timing belt.
DO NOT put thread glue on crankshaft and camshaft spindles or bolts!

Have youa video on the relationshipa of those involved in these engines? For example a pvauxhal CDTI has stamped on it FPT /GM. So FPT is Fiat Power Train. Are they separated from Fiat and what is GM's part in this. Did GM help deveop the multijet engine or did they fund the development or did they just licence the use of the engine? I'm assuming that on Alfa's and Fiats the engine is not stamped GM or is it?

What is your opinion on early 16v jtd m jet engine from alfa 156 (103kw and 110kw versions)? Pros and cons of 8v and 16v? In my expirience the 16v jtd would not bend the valves, because it has different style of lifters. It is going to break rhe rocker arms (usually).
@alfaromeonoproblem
@alfaromeonoproblem Жыл бұрын
Hello. The early 16v are very good, very strong too! The thicker valves means that the lifter arms will brake as a fuse and the valves will be ok. Seen it several times too. The only thing was too much egr, but the factory still supplies a restricted plate that takes out most of it. And with no fault codes.

@alfaromeonoproblem thanks for your reply. I was thinking that 5w40 full synthetic would have less noack evaporation rating that's why I was thinking of switching to 5w40 because it's difficult to find a 10w40 full synthetic. Yes, Magneti Marelli and Fiat developed the commonrail injection system. And the Alfa 156 was the fist comercial car to have engine with such injection system. There is another way to kill that engine. After certain time the exhaust is blocked with carbon, causing to much back pressure to the turbo. With this turbo can fail and/or press oil into intake system. Exactly that happened at my 105 HP JTD years ago. Oil consumption gets so high, that during a long trip, I did not recognise that engine oil was below minimum. At the end I got a bearing issue and high repair costs assembling a used engine.

@Brisbane2024 ok, thanks, and when you say your exhaust was blocked do you mean dpf or muffler? If it was the dpf did you get a warning light? Thanks, I really love this car and I want to look after it.

@@mark737-c4x The 105 HP JTD does not have DPF, just catalyst. The muffler was blocked with carbon black after 180000 km.

Can somebody help me with advice? Please. Nobody can fix this, i don't know where to go anymore. I have 156sw with same 8v engine. It have a temp. oscilation from 83c to over 95c. In town (stop-go) it never goes over 85c, even in summer on 37- 40c heat outside. But if i drive on open road/highway, it goes way over 90c if i drive it on constantly rpm. 2500rpm is 90c, 2700rpm is 93c, 3000rpm is 95 and so on...and it is on a flat road. Even a small hill on highway, engine temp jumping for +10c. Constantly rpm over 2000rpm, or a just little accelaration brings an engine temp. jump. All measured with diagnostic. It is acting like the engine has not thermostat. I replace: 3 different thermostat, waterpump, radiator, antifreez, antifreez container. Hoses are soft, no big pressure in system, good fluid circulation, the vent work fine, no leaking, no mixing fluids... Car start and run good, like before, no power missing, everything seems fine, no smoke, but engine temp. rising is killing me. Tnx for every advice

Hello. I had a very good answer but the phone died on me.. So.. it may be normal. I too had a few costumer cars doing this after replacing the thermostat. New revised thermostats run 10c hotter then before. That and the notorious weird readings of the gauge can create a huge confusion and fear. In fact the troubleshooting that I did, including head off and radiator checks confirm that the engine will run good (or better) with this new type.

@@alfaromeonoproblem Thank you very much for your answer. I guess that i had no choice, than drive like this, and hope that everything will be ok. It's not pleasent to see gauge on 95c or higher, but it is what it is. Keep going on good work with cars and YT clips! I wish you the best.

I found the limit of the engine....3.3 bar of boost, methanol spraying. It was quicker than a stock gtr whilst in a fiat doblo, but it pulled the threads out of the block for the headbolts.

I'm out of words that it didn't spin a bearing, didn't throw a rod, didn't melt a piston. What a HELL of an engine! I believe you could even drive a tank with it :)

@alfaromeonoproblem because today i discovered that the timing snapped on my 147 1.9 8v. I'm afraid that the engine is done. So there is a chance the engine is still fine ? And thank you for the reply.
