Yes, Magneti Marelli and Fiat developed the commonrail injection system. And the Alfa 156 was the fist comercial car to have engine with such injection system. While German and other manufacturers had still used a pre-WWI technology. Fiat does make the best diesel engines. Appart maybe for that 1.3 mjt, but it is a small engine so maybe they all have similar issues.

Have youa video on the relationshipa of those involved in these engines? For example a pvauxhal CDTI has stamped on it FPT /GM. So FPT is Fiat Power Train. There is another way to kill that engine. After certain time the exhaust is blocked with carbon, causing to much back pressure to the turbo. With this turbo can fail and/or press oil into intake system. Exactly that happened at my 105 HP JTD years ago. Oil consumption gets so high, that during a long trip, I did not recognise that engine oil was below minimum. At the end I got a bearing issue and high repair costs assembling a used engine.

interesting to see the engine components exposed so clearly, especially the channels of the engine coolant. last year, after replacing the water pump, the workshop flushed out the cooling system on my 1.9 8v 3 times because the coolant kept on turning in to a rusty looking brown color. a year later, the coolant is still ‘rusty’ so i wonder where that comes from. anyone any ideas?

It happened to me! Due to stupid mechanic of the previuos owner. I flushed the system 5 times with water before it stopped rusting. Even a small hill on highway, engine temp jumping for +10c. Constantly rpm over 2000rpm, or a just little accelaration brings an engine temp. jump. All measured with diagnostic. It is acting like the engine has not thermostat. I replace: 3 different thermostat, waterpump, radiator, antifreez, antifreez container. Hoses are soft, no big pressure in system, good fluid circulation, the vent work fine, no leaking, no mixing fluids... Hello. I had a very good answer but the phone died on me.. So.. it may be normal. I too had a few costumer cars doing this after replacing the thermostat. New revised thermostats run 10c hotter then before. That and the notorious weird readings of the gauge can create a huge confusion and fear. In fact the troubleshooting that I did, including head off and radiator checks confirm that the engine will run good (or better) with this new type.
