Hey Jarod. I operate these aircraft for a different carrier. The two rules people most run afoul of, the first is the two carryon rule, which is FAA and has to do with how we determine the weight of each passenger which we need to determine the aircraft's weight. The second is HAZMAT people don't realize is HAZMAT. Laptop batteries, phone batteries, camera batteries etc are prohibited from being checked into cargo holds because if they fail and catch fire the cargo fire suppression system can't slow the fire. The overhead bins come in a few "standard" sizes which can be found on carrier websites. Not all aircraft have closets, which will vary in size with different cabin variants among same aircraft type, and they are usually reserved for first class anyway. F/As and gate agents, to reducing boarding issues, will eyeball the bag as it comes on to filter out the one that won't fit and tag them for gate to gate check. Sometimes they get it wrong, but more often than not they have been around long enough to know what will and won't work in a bin. Also, F/As are not permitted to lift your bag into an overhead bin, if they get injured, the flight will be delayed or cancelled for lack of crew. The best way to handle special items, like large instruments (cellos, stand up bass) or sensitive equipment like cameras , medical gear, human organs; first, when you buy your ticket there is a section for special needs, like wheelchairs, generally list the items you won't check (expensive camera gear) then be proactive and call the airline as early as you can to see how they intend to accommodate your item. In some cases, for items that won't fit in an overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, you are able to buy a second seat which your gear can occupy. We do this for cellos/guitars/bass and may end up being your best option. The one that surprised me traveling with camera gear, was TSA asking me to remove every lens and body from my bag, remove the sleeves and put them through the scanner. I felt like I was inventorying my gear for any opportunist who wanted to grab something off the belt or my bag while I'm in the head.

Great info, I’ve had some unique interactions with TSA and my camera gear. My calm demeanor and being TSA PreCheck and Global entry helps too.

As a TSA officer and enthusiast photographer I can tell you first hand it is near impossible to see through or determine what's in a bag with THAT much camera gear because of the amount of metal and glass. Put several lenses together and you get what looks like lead shielding on an X-ray. My checkpoint knows whenever there's a questionable call about camera gear to call me as I've got 20k+ worth of gear myself and they'll know I'll handle it with care and strike up a conversation with the passenger so they feel at ease knowing another photographer is checking their gear

This might be one of the most valuable videos you’ve put out. I never would have even considered this being an issue. I usually have my gear in a backpack style bag (lowepro 450) but I do have a roller bag too that I got for flights. Thank you for letting us know that if we are on a smaller plane, don’t bring the roller! So, “Don’t check your gear at the gate” now falls under “Don’t be an asshole”?
@bundysnap693 жыл бұрын
Hey, I have the same Lowepro 450 backpack...Do you ever have a problem with weight? Most airlines now only allow 7kg. Mine was 15kg first time I flew with it & closer to 20kg last time coz I had to put cordless drill batteries in it. Been lucky so far when I show them it's all camera gear.
@Britton09322 жыл бұрын
@@bundysnap69 yeah, weight can be a problem. Anything that doesn’t need protection I put into my second personal bag carry on. If it’s something like a drill as in your example, that can go in checked baggage. My vital stuff stay in the Lowepro

fun part is the think tank rollers if you get the international ones, are measured to make sure they can fit both domestic and international overhead storage. I'm often told my bag is too big but when they see how easy it slids into the overhead compared to others normal carry-ons they are so surprised.

This is really cool. I no longer Bowl do to a severe accident while working on a lane. New years Eve of 2008 I was working a new years party in a bowling alley. during the party one of the lanes went down. I was laying on the pin deck repairing the ball sweep above the pins when Someone rolled a ball down the lane striking me in the head. took about five years to get better. infarct picked up a camera a couple of years after and have enjoyed doing this and can say it really helped i saving my life. I do go to bowling alleys now and then. still love it but have not bowled since. had to relearn to walk talk and all the other sttuf. This is an awesome and inspiring video. Thank you for this video. I'm a huge PBA fan, and watching their channels shows just how much of a grind it is for those guys trying to make it on the tour. They're working their butts off on the lanes and off, and any increase in viewership will help them out. Keep up the good work, bud. It was also surreal seeing two of my biggest passions come together, first a glimpse of you on B&K, now finally seeing the photos from your time with Kyle. Awesome stuff!

Jared I fly the CRJ's for a different regional airline flying on behalf of Delta. We have heard of some American airlines regionals doing this and what's happening is their FAA Approved weight and balance program is contingent on passengers onboard not having those roller bags. It's pretty silly but just how the program got certified. This lets them reduce the average weight of the passengers which can help with some weight/balance situations when you total up all the passengers and bags on the plane. When it comes to Delta regionals, and I believe United regionals too, if it fits it is fine to take on. I bet that bag would even fit on a CRJ-200 which is the smallest of those jets. But some of the American regionals are set up differently where they might prohibit those roller bags onboard (even if it seems smaller for a rolling bag). Like you say, definitely good to have a backup bag. But being in philly, you're probably mostly flying american airlines so it might just be something to plan around, if you're on a regional jet.

This is why I use a roller bag for low value items and a good carry on sized pack with a Peak Design Large camera cube in for my camera gear. Then take a MaxPedition camera bag for carry on under seat. If there's mither and they want to check the backpack (as happened once on a full flight) I swap over my most valuable stuff to the MaxP bag and if necessary wear a body and lens rather than it going in the hold.

1:51 Which shoulder bag is that? The last gig I did in Miami, I actually drove from NC because I needed to fill my car with gear. When I do fly I leave out of a small but growing regional airport (AVL). I haven't flown for work in over 5 years. I remember that I had my Lowepro roller x200 fully packed and they would put it below. It would be nice to have that shoulder bag option stuffed away in case of emergency. I fly for work with my gear all the time for years now. American Airlines broke a 5dmk3 and a 70-200mm lens that was in my Think Tank roller that they forced me to gate check because it wouldn't fit into the overhead. They also wouldn't help pay for the damages after I protested they made me gate check it. After that I've never flown again without a Pelican 1510 roller. Fits in every over head and if it has to go under the plane no big deal. The thing is built for abuse. Also with American it helps to board in group 5 or better to make sure you have room for your roller. I pack a second bag to work out of if needed. I always try to fly Southwest because all their planes are 737's and there is always guaranteed overhead space.

The likely reason is when you have to turn it sideways it takes up a significant amount of space in the small bin. This is a problem on full flights. The larger planes have deeper cabinets allowing them to go in with the wheels out. So if its not a full flight its not really a problem. But if it is full the last people wont have room for even back pack size bags. Keep up this great work! Really enjoy the photostories!

I had my gear (nowhere close to that much) for a vacation, in a backpack that fit under the seat and I had to unpack it going through security. Almost missed my flight because it took almost an hour to clear my camera and lenses. This has happened all but one time I was flying since last August. That time I unloaded my gear (camera, 2 lenses) and the security was surprised because it was obviously camera gear.
