Hey Jarod. I operate these aircraft for a different carrier. The two rules people most run afoul of, the first is the two carryon rule, which is FAA and has to do with how we determine the weight of each passenger which we need to determine the aircraft's weight. The second is HAZMAT people don't realize is HAZMAT. Laptop batteries, phone batteries, camera batteries etc are prohibited from being checked into cargo holds because if they fail and catch fire the cargo fire suppression system can't slow the fire. The overhead bins come in a few "standard" sizes which can be found on carrier websites. Not all aircraft have closets, which will vary in size with different cabin variants among same aircraft type, and they are usually reserved for first class anyway. F/As and gate agents, to reducing boarding issues, will eyeball the bag as it comes on to filter out the one that won't fit and tag them for gate to gate check. Sometimes they get it wrong, but more often than not they have been around long enough to know what will and won't work in a bin. Also, F/As are not permitted to lift your bag into an overhead bin, if they get injured, the flight will be delayed or cancelled for lack of crew. The best way to handle special items, like large instruments (cellos, stand up bass) or sensitive equipment like cameras , medical gear, human organs; first, when you buy your ticket there is a section for special needs, like wheelchairs, generally list the items you won't check (expensive camera gear) then be proactive and call the airline as early as you can to see how they intend to accommodate your item. In some cases, for items that won't fit in an overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, you are able to buy a second seat which your gear can occupy. We do this for cellos/guitars/bass and may end up being your best option. The one that surprised me traveling with camera gear, was TSA asking me to remove every lens and body from my bag, remove the sleeves and put them through the scanner. I felt like I was inventorying my gear for any opportunist who wanted to grab something off the belt or my bag while I'm in the head.

As a TSA officer and enthusiast photographer I can tell you first hand it is near impossible to see through or determine what's in a bag with THAT much camera gear because of the amount of metal and glass. Put several lenses together and you get what looks like lead shielding on an X-ray. My checkpoint knows whenever there's a questionable call about camera gear to call me as I've got 20k+ worth of gear myself and they'll know I'll handle it with care and strike up a conversation with the passenger so they feel at ease knowing another photographer is checking their gear

This might be one of the most valuable videos you’ve put out. I never would have even considered this being an issue. I usually have my gear in a backpack style bag (lowepro 450) but I do have a roller bag too that I got for flights. Thank you for letting us know that if we are on a smaller plane, don’t bring the roller! So, “Don’t check your gear at the gate” now falls under “Don’t be an asshole”?
@bundysnap69

Hey, I have the same Lowepro 450 backpack...Do you ever have a problem with weight? Most airlines now only allow 7kg. Mine was 15kg first time I flew with it & closer to 20kg last time coz I had to put cordless drill batteries in it. Been lucky so far when I show them it's all camera gear.

fun part is the think tank rollers if you get the international ones, are measured to make sure they can fit both domestic and international overhead storage. I'm often told my bag is too big but when they see how easy it slids into the overhead compared to others normal carry-ons they are so surprised.

I'm a huge PBA fan, and watching their channels shows just how much of a grind it is for those guys trying to make it on the tour. They're working their butts off on the lanes and off, and any increase in viewership will help them out. Keep up the good work, bud. This is why I use a roller bag for low value items and a good carry on sized pack with a Peak Design Large camera cube in for my camera gear. Then take a MaxPedition camera bag for carry on under seat. If there's mither and they want to check the backpack (as happened once on a full flight) I swap over my most valuable stuff to the MaxP bag and if necessary wear a body and lens rather than it going in the hold.

Good luck if they switch planes on you to super small vehicles with no overhead bins at all - for both legs of the flight. Every passenger had to gate check - including this lady 🙋🏼‍♀️ with her 600mm, 100-400mm and 2 pro camera bodies and beyond. My main bag wasn’t even a roller - it was a 45L backpack - not too big at all but there was barely under the seat storage too for most passengers. It was either I gate checked or I didn’t fly. It was kind of like a bus in that I did see them *carefully* load all the bags beneath us but… I am still unsettled from that trip and somehow I feel that won’t be the last time it happens.

The easiest way of preventing this is usually just by telling them the bag had a bunch of lithium ion batteries in it. They’re not ever allowed to check those and have to let you board with it. And presumably that’s not a lie either.

I fly for work with my gear all the time for years now. American Airlines broke a 5dmk3 and a 70-200mm lens that was in my Think Tank roller that they forced me to gate check because it wouldn't fit into the overhead. They also wouldn't help pay for the damages after I protested they made me gate check it. After that I've never flown again without a Pelican 1510 roller. Fits in every over head and if it has to go under the plane no big deal. The thing is built for abuse. Also with American it helps to board in group 5 or better to make sure you have room for your roller. I pack a second bag to work out of if needed. I always try to fly Southwest because all their planes are 737's and there is always guaranteed overhead space.

Safety - guidlines usually based on weight and size. Weight is the most problematic as the overhead bins are vulnerable to failure under a heavy load, especially seen if you experience any heavy landings or some bad turbulence. The risk in these situations is that the bin breaks open and, worst case, any heavy items fall on to someone’s head with the potential of doing a lot of damage. Size of bag will usually relate to available space but also big bags = heavy weights. On a small, busy, commuter aircraft you have very limited space so a big bag is a problem if EVERYONE has a big bag - yes it has happened! Your two-bag solution is a good compromise to take the max size and distributed weight. Hope that explains something of the problems we face in the industry. A good cabin crew is worth their weight in Gold so will always try to help find a solution. What I would ask is that if they want to reposition your bag, and it’s heavy, please lift it for them. Back strains are very common with cabin crew particularly if they are small. Several of my friends have been injured lifting or getting down heavy bags from the overhead locker bins, male and female. Good on you for staying polite and respectful to the crew too! Thank you! I like the vlog style today too. 👍🏻

Jared I fly the CRJ's for a different regional airline flying on behalf of Delta. We have heard of some American airlines regionals doing this and what's happening is their FAA Approved weight and balance program is contingent on passengers onboard not having those roller bags. It's pretty silly but just how the program got certified. This lets them reduce the average weight of the passengers which can help with some weight/balance situations when you total up all the passengers and bags on the plane. When it comes to Delta regionals, and I believe United regionals too, if it fits it is fine to take on. I bet that bag would even fit on a CRJ-200 which is the smallest of those jets. But some of the American regionals are set up differently where they might prohibit those roller bags onboard (even if it seems smaller for a rolling bag). Like you say, definitely good to have a backup bag. But being in philly, you're probably mostly flying american airlines so it might just be something to plan around, if you're on a regional jet.

You handled it like you should have boarding that jet. I am a former photo editor who hired and sent photographers globally and yeah, some not great stories from that part of my career. Usually, things went/go south when a photographer cops an attitude. Politeness carries the day. And for the last 22 years I've been a commercial photographer and traveled pretty extensively around the world. The only time I had to get firm (5 on the A**hole scale) was when I was going to Patagonia for a job and we landed at an interim airport after taking off from Buenos Aires. I was just randomly looking out the window and saw my equipment cases being unloaded. I told the attendant that I just saw my case being unloaded and she said "no you didn't". I looked at her smirking face and said "let me talk to the captain". He came out and I showed him my cases on the airport cart on the tarmac and they delayed the takeoff until the cases were safely back in the cargo hold. BTW. I always marked my cases with neon tape just for the potential of incidences like this. You took great pics / video on your trip to Michigan. Hope we get to see more jobs in the future.

This happens regularly. trying to be in the front of the line always gives you a better chance because after a while they start saying you have to check bags. asking for the supervisor to sign guaranteeing insurance for the gear, telling them you have a bunch of lithium batteries is also prime because they can't be in the luggage area. i have my gear in a carry on bag that I have built into a camera bag with pick foam. everything is secure and it fits under the seat if I have to. I put the camera body and 24-70 in my backpack until I get on the plane so the weight is never over the limit. it's important that whatever you have doesn't look bulky. that will get you in trouble every time. my travel tripod, a lightstand and modifiers go in my luggage

They don't have to use those TSA locks, they can use better ones, and you have to be present if they want to open it. Luggage with firearms are closely monitored and tracked! You don't need a permit for a starter pistol, they're cheap and you have to use a hard lockable case since a firearm is with your gear. You still need pack it good since it can still be thrown around! Starter Pistol Trick!

The likely reason is when you have to turn it sideways it takes up a significant amount of space in the small bin. This is a problem on full flights. The larger planes have deeper cabinets allowing them to go in with the wheels out. So if its not a full flight its not really a problem. But if it is full the last people wont have room for even back pack size bags. Keep up this great work! Really enjoy the photostories!

Hey man. Gate agent for American here, and photographer as well. While I do understand the frustration please try to work with us. We’re instructed to enforce the rules and regulations we spend weeks at training learning, and more often than not we have a supervisor watching our every move. It’s nothing personal really. I always try to advise fellow photographers of ways to get around this rule. I will say that your bag is absolutely too big for a CRJ carry on. The pilot likely let it slide to avoid taking a delay and having to file tons of paperwork. Sometimes the arguments are just not worth the hassle. I will say however that your reservation with AA has likely been remarked with the incident and this may not fly in the future. The best work-around for this issue has been to buy a shorter bag. A nice camera backpack is great for travel, and some even have a handle and roller wheels but can be worn as a back pack. Those absolutely work for CRJ600-900s and E145/40s. Anyway. Best of luck on future travels! I hope I was able to provide a bit of insight.

Other thing - wear a jacket with reasonable pockets, and maybe cargo trousers. If there's a weight check, size check or other problems, you can get away with chucking a few lenses or bodies into pockets. It's not another carry on, but you'd be surprised how much gear you can fit into different places.

Then, if the airline gets their panties in a bunch, just whip it out and hand them the empty shell while giving the best gfy grin you can muster. Last resort (i.e. Lufthansa wants to weigh it): put everything over your shoulder under your jacket, and in you jacket pockets.

I also do love the GM primes. Would have gone for the 24 instead of the 35 though, for more versatility. You can always switch to crop mode and get a 35-ish if need be. Also interesting that you prefer the 135 instead of Sigma's 85/1.4 for portraits. Awesome video, thanks!

as a fellow owner of the 135 GM I'm not surprised he uses this lens for portraits. It truly is a dream of a lens to use!

The Sigma 85 1.4 is amazing, image quality is great. The 135 is great too but you have to be in a different zip code to get a full length shot for portraits. The 85 is just more versatile.

@@nathandkreosote9917 Yeah I agree. I have a 50 for the full length portraits. 85 is like a baby 135. WAY easier to frame with very pleasing results. For my lens kit I I built, I wanted only 3 lenses, short, medium, and long, and 85 is like right between medium and long

Had this happen in Fiji and New Zealand mainly bc people saw a roller and wanted to check the weight which is ALWAYS over limit by a ton due to the glass, like he said be nice but firm/assertive when it’s necessary. Never had to check it but did have to pay $100 extra in Fiji but somehow got to keep it with me for being over the weight limit. Love thinktank, I use their old international v2.0

I once traveled trans atlantic and BA told me I had to check it. I asked well in advance so I bought a huge Pelican case, had everything in there, had specific gear insurance and had everthing registered with customs in advance leaving documentation and replacement cable ties (as additional fastening) prepared in the case. Let's say people gave me very weird looks but nobody thought about even checking the case, neither TSA nor CBP. Back then I was travelling with a medium format setup so everything was rather big and bulky.

I have the same bag and agree it fits in every plane I have flown in. on planes they say no rollers I carry it and don't roll it bast the agents. So far never had an issue, I also always pick seats with guaranteed over head bin space. so far never had an issue even on prop planes.

For me, on CRJ900, if I really do not want to check my carry-on suitcase, I will order first class and board as soon as possible because first class is a 1-2 layout and the storage space above the two seats is almost as big as you may get on A320/737(At least for CRJ900 of Delta).

I do exactly the same every time I fly. Carry on with all my gear in, cameras lenses, battery, radio goggles. Personal ítem my clothe, laptop some wires and one FPV drone on each side of the backpack. If I don’t do it that way I’m not traveling I’ve only checked gear once and it was my underwater z6 rig like housing, uw strobe and done port with 4 locks

I flew to FL on AA from Newark, NJ to Charlotte on a 737 and from Charlotte, NC to Melbourne, FL on an AA Candadair RJ-900, the jet you probably flew on. My bag was the ThinkTank Airport Commuter (no wheels) and had a body and several lenses and had no problems. Perhaps it was just that your bag had wheels?

I carry my gear on a Pelican, it has wheels and a handle. I made the mistake to check as they requested and my 70-200mm got damage IS and AF wouldn’t work. So now I carry a media pass around my neck and never check as baggage. I explain to them why and never had an issue after that.

I also use a pelican, 1535 air. I’m really surprised they broke your lens inside a pelican but stranger things have happened. I usually pack a few colorful zip ties and a lock for my case if they want me to check it. It might be worth getting some “fragile warning” stickers.

Awesome, and timely video. I was in a similar situation years back, for my flight back to local from utah, after photographing superbike races. The issue was weight. There was a bit of a (cordial) standoff, and I was willing to hop on a bus to avoid checking such expensive gear. In the end, they relented and allowed me to board with my camera bag. Troup is one of my favorites to watch in a competition. Such a unique style, and fun personality! Now, I need to pack the camera bag for my flight to Montana. What to bring....
