If you look at the histogram it's under exposed. I would have tried some exposing for the subject and just ran a mask across the shadow line in post to bring the crowd brightness down. This way the edit if destructive in anyway is on the part that is blurred and doesn't matter anyway. Can't hurt when you are already taking 2k photos xD

Nice work Jared, some, in my opinion, potential iconic shots in there. Makes me remember back to the 2001 - 2007 time period when I used to photograph live music, working with venues in my hometown of Plymouth, UK, all-access kinda deals, nothing on this scale, we are talking under 1,000 capacity venues, usually with crappy lighting.

I shot a festival once. took 1900 photos, had to submit 30. Then they used only 3. Which actually was 2 more than many other photographers also shooting the day. So I felt quite good. I can empathise with you. I'm also trying to really understand that most people have no interest in the technical limitations of photography. They just expect you to take a passable picture. I suggest never making excuses, but finding some way to take a picture. Perhaps keep a second camera, maybe even a crop sensor camera in the bottom of your bag at all times, with a 28 or 35mm equivalent lens?

Great footage and analysis of how you got the shots and what your on-the-fly logic was in making those choices . I love that backstage shot of C.C. with the amps freezing him between the twin stacks; and the poison logo thrown in for added dramatic effect.I also like your point about shooting to the stage lacks context, whereas from the stage brings the location and background context to the fore , and gives the viewer that "aha" moment. Must have been a real thrill for you being the only photographer given backstage access! I saw them in Miami. My friend took pictures with her smartphone and held her device vertical the entire 8 hours! We were in B1 which meant too far from the stage to see anything so we had to rely on the "jumbotrons" for images. I swear in every picture she managed to capture everybody's body, precisely because she was vertical. I kinda suggested she shoot horizontal and above looking down. And no context: just a stage. In mine I tried to get a few shots showing both the stage action and the Hard Rock sign and logo to at least give a concrete setting. In Miami, the stadium seating logistics for the floor sections had these 10-foot tall poles designating the rows, and these giant eyesores obscured a clear view of the stage from multiple angles. So both Joan Jett and Poison's fans did not enjoy a straight on experience. Both the videos and still pictures I took are badly degraded because of these things lurking in the foreground. In the shots taken of the stage with you in the background, I could see the same poles. In Miami, It was ONLY after both JJ and Poison had finished BUT before Def Leppard took the stage that stadium staff removed the problems. I wonder if the managers for either of the first two acts ever once bothered ,before the show, to ask themselves or the stadium staff, if the fans who had paid serious cash for floor seats were going to enjoy looking at these signs interrupting their views?
