How did I end up on stage in front of 55,000 fans at a Poison Concert....and did I get the shot or not? In this video I break down what most professional photographers will never show you, non-keeper images. My goal is to show you the good, the bad and the final keepers so you can see how a professional culls and selects his images. This is the Truth about Photography. Thanks to Poison for allowing me to spend the day to capture images of them in Philadelphia during the Stadium Tour.

I shot a festival once. took 1900 photos, had to submit 30. Then they used only 3. Which actually was 2 more than many other photographers also shooting the day. So I felt quite good. But then I hate it when suddenly a group suddenly want a photo, when clearly you don't have a wide lens on the camera.

I can empathise with you. I'm also trying to really understand that most people have no interest in the technical limitations of photography. They just expect you to take a passable picture. I suggest never making excuses, but finding some way to take a picture. Perhaps keep a second camera, maybe even a crop sensor camera in the bottom of your bag at all times, with a 28 or 35mm equivalent lens?

Great video Jared! I have one suggestion for your consideration - decent color T-shirt can help you be more "invisible". If I'm not mistaken, the intention of professional photographer should be stay as inconspicuous as possible (for such an event).
@froknowsphoto
@froknowsphoto 2 жыл бұрын
That's not my intention at these events. You're going to see me no matter what, white guy, afro, regardless of what I wear. Also, I want to be seen, it's branding.

@@froknowsphoto Isn’t being a “white guy with a fro” enough for your”Fro knows photo” branding? So, now you’re admitting that you are trying to draw even more attention to yourself by not wearing black. I’ll say it again, Jared, you are setting a very poor example for your fans. I must admit that I’m surprised you’re digging in on this. It’s disappointing.
@alberthrabac2049
@alberthrabac2049 2 жыл бұрын
@@froknowsphoto Thanks for answer Jared! I think afro (especially in this size) is as a brand good enough :-). On the other hand, colorful clothes can be for a lot of people in audience distracting. Don't forget that concert is also a visual experience. The appearance of the stage is usually carefully color balanced, the selection of clothing of the band is also not a coincidence (usually). The reasons why to use silent shutter at concerts are obvious, and for similar reasons I think photographer should not expose himself too much visually.

If you look at the histogram it's under exposed. I would have tried some exposing for the subject and just ran a mask across the shadow line in post to bring the crowd brightness down. This way the edit if destructive in anyway is on the part that is blurred and doesn't matter anyway. Can't hurt when you are already taking 2k photos xD

You'll learn a lot and get some great shots! Even if it's just a so-so band it won't matter because you can still get shots like Jared got. So don't be afraid to ask. The worst they can do is say no.

Appreciate the knowledge drop. One thing, for some reason I keep hearing "CC, pick up that guitar and tAlk to me"😂

These are some incredible photos, and Poison seemed like such great people to get along with! I'm only an amateur photographer but seeing the workflow of a pro when picking shots is very helpful.

I don't agree with everything Jared says, but for sure some good advice on picking the greatest images, then releasing the best of those. In another video I can't quote it exactly but it was along the lines of 'if you release crap, that is on you'. I feel this is advice that has helped my photography, quality over quantity.

No disrespect or anything like that intended... Maybe the black on black t-shirt with the "I Shoot Raw" would've been better so as to not distract from the band....maybe Jared run out? I want one of those, they look cool. 😎👌 Edit - And @21:35 it's touched upon. 👍🏼

When in fast-changing conditions: AUTO-ISO!!! Once you start using it, you will never go back! You choose your aperture, minimum shutter speed and the camera chooses the ISO. Can't stress this enough! UPDATE: Just saw you mention auto-iso in the video! 99% of the time it gives a great exposure. For the 1% it is a little off: that is why we shoot raw! You can see the exposure it is giving you through the viewfinder, so you can use exposure compensation if desired. But, even if it is off a bit in a fast changing situation, I don't worry because I am shooting raw. Here is the bottom line for me: In fast changing situations, I don't have to worry about exposure (using auto-iso) or focus (using Sony's focus tracking), just composition.

36:25 Not so sure the side light or being off center bothers me. What feels a little distracting is how far and small they have tended to be. I'm curious how necessary the top and bottom quarters of the frame are, if that makes sense. Good job! We're all happy you make these videos to talk about your experience
