Hey Kyle - The *clutch* issue is no big deal for the MX guys - but for us offroad / enduro guys it's really important ! As a retired Electrical Engineer, I KNOW that it would be possible to design a "virtual clutch" in the motor control software that would mimic the "charged up flywheel" for legit trials "double blips" and such - this would add ZERO mechanical complexity and/or weight to the bike.. the virtual "clutch lever" would just work a potentiometer to provide an electrical input to the motor controller. We've gotta "lean on" Stark Varg to implement this as an option for offroad !

The problem for enduro is battery life. Electric Cycle Rider did a test in mountain single track. 40hp setting. 33 miles in 2hrs 11mins. Oh and weight, the Stark weighs more than a 450.

@@jetrep It's a good point. I ride a 450 w/rekluse in gnarly single track. I'm 52 and can't ride like I use to but the rekluse is like a cheat code for me. I'll probably go to a 300 soon and will definitely be putting a rekluse in it. It contradicts his point.

It’s not a problem , iv ridden some of the nastiest trails on mine and had to hop over logs that were near a meter high with no problem . I don’t understand peoples obsession with a clutch . Eddie karlson gets some crazy shit done on the varg without one

I don't know if they changed the heading from 2020 till 2024 on the xcw's but I've hit 93 on a flat dirt road on my 2020. Still fell like it had a pinch more. That being said, I'm sure the Varg pulls harder. Well done Kyle.

Why does everyone hate electric bikes so much? I like all dirt bikes, except the worst bike I owned, a 1998 KTM 380 two stroke, which was a POS for a variety of reasons.

​​@@OtisFlint and that's because EVs in general are being pushed upon us like a political agenda nowadays. Back then when KTM introduced the freeride E, I was so excited about it(and so many other E bikes and cars like the Brammo empulse, lightning LS218 , Zombie 222 E mustang etc.. And as far as I know, they never said "EV good ICE bad" kind of things. They just introduced a new type of dirt bike, that's it. Just as we have 2 stroke and 4 stroke dirt bikes now, most of the people don't have an issue if all types including electric will be available in the future. Electric is just another technology which has its own unique character. Some will like it, some won't. Some will like silence, some will like noise. There's no problem in that. What I like the most is the rider engagement. Noise is an added bonus. I don't want the bike doing most of the things for me, I want to control the bike as much as possible. If that's possible in an electric bike, then I would definitely take it with all it's other advantages. Another reason EVs are getting hate is the woke ass EV supporters who think everybody should like instant torque, top speed and silence etc. They are as bad as blind EV haters.

Its because the most vocal E-bike simps are as bad as vegans. If a live and let live mindset were applied there would be less pushback. Id love to own a varg personally but will always own ice as well. I actually enjoy everything about owning and riding/manipulating an engines power characteristic and a clutch.

Hay Kile if you want a cool electric dirt bike with a CLUTCH look at the Arctic Leopard E-XE 880. It has a better range than a stark and is cheaper.

Fun video but I suspect this is mostly a gearing test. I used to road race Husabergs and went quite a bit faster than this with less power (65whp)

zero to 80mph is way faster on the stark. don't be a battery hater, i've ridden mine in the sand, desert trails, two MX tracks - with the new software updates last month i can tell you it has plenty of range unless you want to go for a long (2 hours+) enduro ride. the fun thing about the stark is that you basically have the same instant torque at 40hp as 60hp+.. probably no reason to think you need to have the stark at 55 hp because your ICE bike says it has 55 hp.

Top speed is mostly a product of gearing. For example a POS xrl 650 form 93 will do over 100 mph. A 80s CR 500 with 60 HP will about 100 with gearing mostly limited by a close ratio trans

Electric Cycle Rider did a range test in mixed mountain singletrack. 33 miles in 2hrs 11mins. Not even half of what I would want for enduro.

We had a ride with mixed single track, fire roads and an abandoned gravel pit and the guy on the Varg only lasted an hour before he had to nurse it back to his van. Totally useless for anything else than MX but not as useless as my old KTM freeride E was!

The speed is mostly dictated by the gearing so the top speed of either of these bikes could be a lot faster. My KLR with 40 hp can get to 95 mph.

Two things I care about are lighter weight and how long will it run through the rugged mountain trails in north and central Idaho in one ride. Top speed not an issue for me. No EVs for me personally.

83 is the fastest I’ve been on my xc-w also. Absolutely terrifying! I have since increased the gearing to take down the low gears and get more speed out of the mid gears but haven’t tried a top speed run again

It doesn’t need a clutch… just a throttle. Instant torque always on tap. BUT sorry i don’t wanna see it in MX. It’s just too dangerous if riders can hear each other. They’re going to have to add artificial noise to make it safe. Riders know the bikes are coming on their left or right because they hear their engines. Starks are silent but deadlies. That awesome for trails but I don’t like it for MX. It will make a dangerous sport more dangerous.

And now add higher gearing and see where it ends. Rear wheel hp with the Stark is 73'ish, on the KTM should be 50'ish. In the end your speed is determend by your hp and drag. But is also limited by your top geared speed, that's why 50 and 80hp didn't matter at the Stark. Both bikes are not geared for speed, but just add a 15 sprocket up front (KTM will fit the Stark) and see what happens. I would love to show you, but have nowhere legal to test it for you. If only anyone in the Netherlands or Western-Gemany has a long stretch of land i can use...

The Stark Varg caries its peek power just above mid range rpm. Therefore to take advantage of peak power for top speed run a 38 t in the back and 15 t in front.
