What an interesting parallel. I am now in retirement age, after a long career around the world. I was born and raised in Europe. My daughter also studied at a University in Tokyo. She later married a Japanese national, founded a family, and still lives in Tokyo. Several years ago I moved for retirement to Japan and shuttle to Europe frequently. Considered Portugal as an alternative country for retirement but settled here in Japan. Enjoy this phase of life very much. Have plenty of friends the same age, here in Japan and back in Europe. If interested, we can exchange more details by email. Kind regards, Wolf

Same last Airbnb, they expected us to take the garbage to the street by 6am and take bedding, towels through the washer. While thus charging me $350 cleaning fee and Airbnb fee $160 for 1.5 days 4pm checkin and checkout 10am 😂. When we arrived the home was gross, hair everywhere! We had to wash all the towels and bedding the first night. Ridiculous.

With you on the hotel v Airbnb - for solo travellers anyway. Had a week on the Sunshine Coast in Australia last year more cost effective than the local Airbnb rates.

I would love to visit Japan and Korea, we were on the way to Korea when covid began and had to cancel our trip :( I only stayed at 2 airbnbs, in Lisbon and Paris, and they were both wonderful, I love the experience of feeling like a local, shopping in markets, cooking meals at home, etc, but I understand it can be hit or miss. I hope to meet you one day in Portugal, we plan to move there in the future, we live in New York, originally from Israel and our son was born in Korea (we are an adoptive family).

Brilliant city. I had the fortune of visiting for 2 weeks through work about 10 years ago. It was utterly bewildering, but I had the comfort of a group of people with me. Well done for visiting by yourself, embracing and enjoying the city. Japan is my favourite country, no doubt. 👍

@@Daphna. I use hotels for travel. I don't like the unknown variables w airbnb ... Am moving to Ecuador and will rent an apartment there, for slow travel. Most are fully furnished so it's like an airbnb but w a lease

Airbnb still beats hotels when it comes to travel with a family. But for solo or couple trips- yes, hotels are nicer

Thats a good point about it being more affordable than hotels for a family. Im speaking from the point of view of a solo traveler

Love your attitude and wisdom Daphna! Thanks for sharing your life as well as tips. Keeping my fingers crossed that I too can continue to be healthy and find the freedom you have. I’m actually from Portugal but live in the US and love how people are much more open and friendly here (in my experience), but the healthcare, violence and political climate in the US is too chaotic - so I still don’t know where I should retire. Have a blast on your travels!

May I ask what techniques you use to get all the shots of you when out and about? It looks like you have a camera crewe but I'm sure you don't. Just wondering as it can be hard to get footage of yourself when travelling alone.

Hi Daphna. Yes, everything you said is 100% accurate. I've lived in Japan for over 16 years now and the Japanese can teach Americans (and other countries) quite a lot - higher taxes on the upper classes pay for a centralized government that actually helps people with the essentials, no guns or gun violence, very little crime, excellent healthcare, high levels of education, cleanliness way beyond reproach... My daughter grew up here from the age of 9, went to Hawaii for her first year of college and couldn't wait to leave (high homeless rates which bring higher crime levels - they stole her brand new scooter one month after I bought it for her.) She wants to stay in Japan forever and never return to the US. I don't blame her. Yes, there are problems, just like in all countries, but for the most part, life here is very safe and secure. Thank you for another enjoyable video.

I wonder if some hotels still offer residential rates. Didn't the writer Dorothy Parker live at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan?

You have a point! You've just reminded me that many artists used to live in hotels back in the day. Ernest Hemingway, Jackson Pollock. Perhaps we should revisit this concept, but in a more affordable way, for creative people looking for a flexible lifestyle

I feel you as a mom and independent woman at the same time - my kids live abroad as well it is indeed a somewhat unwanted side effect from raising them into independency and maturity. In Italy I meet people in their 50s still being stuck in their life and not even going freely to the gym, sneaking out at night to have a drink. Unimaginable but true. So if that would have been the other side of this coin, I prefer having independent happy children.
