You’re one of my favourite artist. I love how vibrant and purposeful your paintings always turn out to be. They have the type of delicacy that I haven’t seen in any other persons work. You can trace a drawing onto a canvas with extreme detail, but if you don’t know how to paint, your work won’t look good. That’s what people don’t understand. It’s true that the likeness can be much better with a projector, but as you said, the objective is to make things flow as smooth as possible. Exercising your drawing skills to capture likeness is just one of the many sides of art making. Congratulations man, your paintings are so vibrant and elegant 🙌🏽

Yesss… so true! My students were stunned that artists use projectors. I tell them that if you want to make a living from selling your art, then use the tools available along with your creative problem solving and technical skill! Continue to practice drawing skills from observation because developing that eye to hand connection is incredibly important in many facets of art. I actually think the likeness in portraiture comes into play with all of the nuances that the projector does not help transfer, but instead the artist with a trained eye and technical ability is able to capture so methodically.

I always look forward to your videos regardless. I’m a firm believer in using whatever thing I need to make my painting process easier. I don’t know where this dumb idea started that tracing, using a lightbox or projector, even carbon or graphite paper is a fail. It’s dumb. And inaccurate. Every artist I know or follow starts their composition on anything other than their final substrate.

You’re an excellent illustrator. That’s what I think of you as. Not so much an artist. I’m afraid I feel like you don’t have anything to tell the world. It seems be mostly just technique. So when you speak of “inspiration” I always wonder what does that word mean to you.

I think the rub with projectors is that some people use projectors as a crutch because they don't want to bother with learning to draw. Personally I don't really even have a problem with people doing that, because I think gatekeeping in art is dumb, but I think the art suffers if they skip fundamentals.

Hey, Alpay. I was wondering if you could share with us what your palette looks like as you paint. I am so inspired by your work, but am always curious about that aspect of the painting process that painters so rarely show. As a new painter, some of my biggest moments of growth have come from seeing the palette habits of painters who actually know what they are doing.

I recently started using a projector for my paintings. It takes away the headache of trying to get the sketch right and the frustration of finding out mid-paint that I got my proportions wrong and the whole thing is a failure. I have far more motivation to paint now that I don't have to dread the initial sketch.
