I once received a commission in which the client gave me a philosophical paper and told me to read it and create a painting. At first, I was nervous but excited. It took me a few months to create the piece, and he loved it. It's lots of fun to explore new things!

Yes. Like, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, etc. Artists relied on rich patrons and patrons liked to commission stuff. And the real professionals delivered. If you live off it, it's a job.

Happy to hear you speak so positively about fan art. I know some people look down on it (thankfully haven't met too many yet), but it brings a certain joy to me to paint characters or creatures that I know and associate memories and feelings with. Usually it makes me happier than painting a person that I have no connection to. The majority of my art is fan art, and it is also a large part of how I learned to make art. I think some people simply underestimate how much work, effort and passion can go into fan art or other fan creations. The gundam turned out great! Would love to see you finish the giant one.

I think the issue with commissions in today's insa-culture is that people generally don't understand that the commission process is collaborative from both sides. Clients think that commissioning an artist is like ordering from Burger King and artists believe that they should have 100% creative range to do whatever they want for a commission because they are "the artist". I think both of these approaches are wrong. Overall I believe people are frustrated with the comission process on both sides because there is a lack of respect for the creative process and artists in general. I myself am tired of being asked to do things for free, with endless edits and iterations, being possibly ghosted half-way through a project, all while under unrealistic expectations and ridiculous time constraints. Unfortunately, not many artists who do commissions talk about how they approach the business/client side of the discussion, how to set expectations and what to do if things start to go wrong. I definitely would be interested to see how you handle this process with clients and what are the steps you take to keep everything on track and ending positively.

I think commissions are a wonderful way to challenge yourself to bring out someone else's vision and while there are horror stories of working with impossible clients, I think there is also a great satisfaction revealing a painting to your elated client and they tell you it's exactly what they wanted or even better. Picking the right clients and commissions are important for sure. It's a skill to be able to communicate well with your client to make sure you are aligned with their idea.

I’ve never heard of people down playing commissions, but I can’t say I’m surprised in this day and age 😑 I’ve been trying to get as many commissions as I can for years! 😂 It’s one of the hardest things an artist has to do I think (next to marketing 😝). I love making art, be it someone else’s idea or my own, and have always thought commissions were that added challenge of making something AND blowing the mind and expectations of your client. When you can do both it’s the best sort of praise you can get. I think those who don’t like commissions are kinda the types that just want that money tree to appear from a magical land or something 😂

I think it's a "if no one wants to buy my original art, I guess I HAVE to take on commissions to make a living" point of view, which is really sad. I agree with you: there's that extra bit of challenge involved in a commission. Maybe that's too scary for some? So instead of facing the difficulties, you downplay commissions, so you can hide in your comfort zone...? For a commission, you get to make something really special for someone who is not able to make it themselves. Isn't that just really awesome?!?

There were times when I did commissions. Problem was these were mostly dog paintings! Often from poor photos! The most heartfelt reaction came from a painting I despised most. Problem was that the person that commissioned it did it as a gift for another person. The dog had died a few months ago and the ownders missed him very much! We had agreed on a timeframe, but more than a week before deadline she called me to tell me she "needed the finished work tomorrow"! I had made good progress but it was far from my standards. I worked through the night and a good part of the next day, but it still was far from what I would normally give away. I really felt ashamed and despised to be related to that half baked thing. A few weeks later I met the recipients when I visited the "commissioners" and they were told that I was the "artist". To my total shock (i was about to begin apologizing for the poor execution) they hugged me both, with tears running down their face (no, I´m not Donald Trump, I only sound like him now) and couldn´t stop thanking me. Sadly other customers killed the vibe for me so I stopped doing dog commissions.

Some of us are a brush for hire, but not by choice. I'm not particularly creative, although I'm an "artist". So, i totally depend on commissions to create my body of work. Left on my own, I would rarely paint anything that would stand out. Combined with a client who knows what they want, the sky is the limit.

I think you pointed out some of the most terrifying and liberating aspects of commission work. I took on a few pieces in the past (not to your skill level or size), but what I found was that after getting over the fear of "will it be liked?" it was easier having some of the choices already made. Sometimes freedom is in closing one door to move on through another. I never had any regrets taking the commissions. I look back at them now and feel they helped me in many ways, like dealing with real people and developing my social skills. Maybe that's what is missing with the negative criticism.

Yes. Please yes, finish that painting!!! I long for the day when we go to museums and enjoy robots and Minecraft, and all kinds of things that make up what means to be living in the here and the now. I love this piece, and if I had the kind of money that meant I could order commissions, I would throw that money around like there was no tomorrow; there are so many amazing artists out there who create beautiful art that are just not taken serious because of what they choose to paint. There is was a gentleman on youtube that decided to paint his entire walk through Elden Ring on a sketch book, and it is triumphant! Thanks for sharing

I've been having some hard time with commissions lately, mostly because I am comfortable doing landscapes and clients want family portraits mostly. Most of the art that I make is commission based, and I love that it pushes my skills and creativity as an artist by forcing me to work with subjects that I'm unfamiliar with. I love working within constraints because it forces me to be more creative with what I can do - personally, having unlimited options leads to decision fatigue and procrastination.

You are right that creative process is often chaotic. I think I would look for another ways I could make this piece instead of buying another set;). Commisions are often underestimated because that's how most artists start. They think they need to create something that somebody would actually buy as they are not that recognised yet. I think comissions can be even more difficult. When you paint what you want, you often go with the flow. When you paint e.g. a portrait, it is important to capture the likeness and the energy of the person. Once I was asked to paint a small girl who had passed away. I was too scared to do it so I refused. I love your painting! I would love to see the bigger piece.

fett! i love this painting! hahaha and i actually do a commission job (painting 13 canvases for an influencer event next wednesday) while seeing this… who cares at all about the title of being “real” by the criteria of others… had this conversation so many times, and i am just tired of it, as those who start to open the topic of realness, and telling me, i was not real, are after 5 minutes of talking ALWAYS the most sensitive people, who just want to be loved by others, and secretly wish to have the strength to do what they want… so “you are not real” means basically “i am weak”. great video. and the colours of this robot at the end are so buttery soft and nice… love it!

I'm down on commissions also, the issue I had was people would see what I did and would ask me to do something else. The other issue I had is I would do nearly photo--realistic portraits and whilst I would give specific instructions I would receive photos not fit for use with my approach, I started seeing myself as the problem so I simplified my work.

You speak better English than I do and I'm from an English speaking country 😂 You are such an amazing storyteller, who knows how to make words work and the stories are always so rich. I hate the haters. I don't care what people paint as long as they enjoy it. People who create these fictional rules that you can't paint fan art or people who say you shouldn't use a projector... They can do what they like, but for me, we all should do what we enjoy and we also all have different end goals. Too many negative people probably get in the heads of beginners who are then lost to art, because they are told not to do X.
