I was serious about buying the Alpinestars vest, but looks like there’s a required annual service which requires the owner to send their vest in to A* for regular service for couple hundred $. Unfortunately, wasn’t able to find more info about servicing on the A* site. After no clear information about the tech air, I ended up buying a Hit Air Vest. Perhaps you can clarify the cost of ownership, regular maintenance cost, and warranty.

David, thank you for the comment. I've reached out to Astars to get your questions answered. As soon as i hear back, I'll let you know.-Chase
@rmatvmc5 жыл бұрын
David, I talked with Astars in regards to your comment and it was explained to me that there is NO annual service required. There is an OPTIONAL 2 year service plan where you can send it in and have Astars go through everything for $99.00. So aside from charging the vest, there is not additional maintenance cost unless it is deployed and you need to have it inspected and re-filled for $299.00. All this information is included with the vest when purchased. As for the warranty, all Astars products have a one year warranty from date of purchase. Hope this helps.-Chase
@rgrtitan5 жыл бұрын
Chase, thanks for reply. I hope A* will make this information more easily found. Currently, other potential customers have to rely on KZbin comments and forums. $100 service fee for 2yrs is reasonable to me, and would have been useful in helping me make a purchase decision. Dealbreaker for me is the standard 1yr warranty on electronic device $1150 (plus 10% tax) safety device is a little weak. I’d be fine with paying a normal service fee each year to keep the device maintained and reliable, is that an option (beyond 2 years)?
@rmatvmc5 жыл бұрын
@@rgrtitan David, if you wanted to send in the vest once a year, you could do that too. You can do it for as long as you own the vest. It's not just for the first two years and then they don't do it anymore if that's what you're asking. I just think that Astars has done enough testing to know that as long as you don't have a deployment, 2 years is enough. Each time you send it in, Astars is sending it back in perfect working condition and ready for use.

Chase, that’s great information if I had that earlier, I would’ve made the purchase for the Tech Air. I’ll keep that in mind for future consideration.

So, what the life expectancy of the Airbag system (Cartridges, Airbags, and Battery). Is there a way that individual components can be changed such as the battery?
@rmatvmc5 жыл бұрын
Cody, I reached out to Brent to get an answer for you and here is his reply: There isn’t any expiration date on the any of the components within the system. In fact, we’ve designed it as such that everything within the system’s components will work as initially designed and tested for 10 years. What we recommend, per the owner’s discretion, is if they’d like, they can send it in every two years for a diagnostic to make sure everything is operating/functioning properly and as updated as possible. Any customer has this capability though, through the data portal to ensure they have the latest software and algorithms, and to upload it to their system themselves. Regarding changing out a battery, it’s completely unnecessary as lithium ion battery technology has advanced so much that the life cycle of the battery will not be compromised over the course of the system’s lifespan. Provided that it is not completely discharged. If storing the vest for long periods of time, like a year or more (not sure why you would do that though) it’s recommended that the charge level be kept around 50% or so, and about an hour’s worth of charge time will provide this if the level is low

So the race vest in size XXL will deploy both canisters regardless of street or race modes?

@a4wong5 жыл бұрын
i got the vest but it seems nobody is asking the question, if you use the track version, and you checked the battery, why cant the vest be used inside any other riding jacket. the arming magnet is on the vest and not jacket(track vest). additionally if anyone was to make a zipper just like the vest and attach it to a non tech jacket, it should ideally work? or not?
@rmatvmc5 жыл бұрын
When the system deploys and the airbag inflates in a crash, it’s about two inches thick on any area the airbag covers, and it deploys to its full pressure literally instantly - in 25 milliseconds (which is 1/40th of a second) in the STREET system, and in 45 milliseconds (1/22nd of a second) in the RACE system. Remember, the STREET system deploys both canisters at the same time, where as the RACE system deploys only one. Tech-Air compatible garments have a big accordion stretch panels as well as HRSF (Hyper Resistant Stretch Fiber) in key areas including the back, shoulders, sides, arms, and chest to allow the jacket or suit to expand with the airbag. Without these stretch zones, the airbag will have nowhere to expand to, and could possibly cause more harm than just the crash alone might otherwise when contained like that in a non-Tech-Air compatible garment. It is designed to expand outwards, not inwards.

Is the street vest compatible with all air tech compatible alpine stars jackets or only a few select ones? The official website is confusing and doesn't really say. For example could I buy the missile ignition leather jacket (air tech compatible) and wear the air tech street vest underneath seeing as I only ride on the street? Or will a race jacket like that only work with the air tech race vest?
@rmatvmc5 жыл бұрын
The airbag system must be worn with a tech-air compatible jacket. And if you decide to buy the street vest, it needs to be paired with a street tech-air jacket. The big thing to remember is that the race vest can be used in street mode AND track mode. The street vest cannot do this. We have product page links in the description showing the different jackets we carry that are tech-air compatible.
@Uninfluenceable4 жыл бұрын
does the street version fit under a tech air compatible 1-piece suit? the lack of info from Alpinestars is incredibly frustrating.
@rmatvmc4 жыл бұрын
A Tech-Air STREET will not work in a RACE garment. This is because the magnetic connection that completes the circuit and tells the Tech-Air STREET system to arm is integrated into the STREET compatible garment. On the Tech-Air RACE systems, the magnetic connection is on the vest itself. This is a direct answer from Alpinestars - Chase

Yes, the reaction time is always the same. The big difference between street and track version is the street deploys both canisters and the race deploys just one at a time.

When the Tech-Air system deploys, it's about two inches thick all the way around, including the collarbone and upper shoulder area, which will restrict the amount of neck movement in the event of a crash (provided the rider is wearing a helmet).
