15:50 the amount of British rail stuff that was in Thomas episodes is astounding. I just thought they were fictional, not actual British rail cars. Wonderfully amazing video

Here's a little story from the Mid-Hants. One weekend during the early days of the railway, when the line only ran from Alresford to Ropley, a steam hauled train left Alresford and proceeded to Ropley. Somewhere neat Bighton bridge the driver spied a man standing in the "four foot", that is between the rails, photographing the train as it approached. The whistle was sounded but the intrepid photographer stood his ground. More whistles but no movement from the man. The brakes were applied and the train brought to a stand short of where the man stood. The driver descended from the cab and asked the fellow what the hell he was doing, to which I am told he replied "Photographing the train". After some "industrial" language was used to point out the error of his ways the man was told to vacate the railway on pain of being arrested. The train then proceeded after a difficult restart on the gradient. The stupidity of some people is quite remarkable in an effort to get that "perfect shot" of a real live steam train.

When you know (thanks to a comment on an earlier video) that the bridges were built wide enough for double track, but the entire length of double track never came, it makes it all the more interesting to spot those places where double track was laid or made provision for.

With the railway being closed north of Medstead and Four Marks Station until Summer 2019 whilst Butts Bridge is being replaced with something wider (for the traffic) this is a good record showing the old Butts Junction Signalbox and the shrubbery which is being removed.

Guess again, the bridge at Butts Junction will not be ready until October 2019, something to do with the "challenging ground conditions" and "concern over the existing bridge foundations". Foundations I hasten to add that had been in place since the bridge was rebuilt in 1901 for the Meon Valley Route and which had withstood daily train movements for around 100 or so years of the 118 years that it was in place!

I've made a few return journeys as a passenger on the Mid Hants Railway. The most memorable of these were in one of the front seats of a DMU and behind "Tornado" and a 9F. It is a pity that the embankments that carried the Meon Valley and Basingstoke and Alton lines away from the Mid Hants appear to have been removed completely. Aug 2020.

The site of Butts Junction certainly is difficult to spot now, yes. As a schoolboy in the 90s I cycled quite a long way to visit the relics of the Meon Valley line, and it still haunts me a little.

Another gem from Hastings Diesels.Thank you. Most of those line side huts are in good condition and it looks as if they have been restored, even the chimneys are extant. What was their function, were they gangers' huts?

Excellent video by Hastings Diesels again, with a wealth of fascinating details on screen. Might I however suggest a map at the beginning so that those of us who are not familiar with the geography of the area can get an idea of where we are?

Hmm, yes I see your point. However, good online mapping is readily available, whereas if I incorporate a map into my video it would have to be one I'd drawn myself because of copyright problems otherwise. I'll think about it, but this won't happen straight away -- too much else to do, including already a day late with Hungerford to Westbury (Heywood Road Junction)!

What was the gov thinking when they closed down this beautiful line the same thing happened in new south wales where they closed down 2 thirds of the system and nsw rail are the biggest bus company in the state thanks richard for another fine series cheers bob.

Is the multiple working equipment serviceable, have the Hastings units ever worked in multiple with any other class, can it work with a 205? If it can then the next time this unit visits the mid hants railway, I'll leave you to guess what the next question is.

On paper, the Hastings unit should be able to couple & multi up with any 205 and 207 out there. In practice, our train was fitted with Central Door Locking in order to continue running on the main line after 2005 - see www.hastingsdiesels.co.uk/news/articles/2005a02/ This has re-purposed a couple of train wires in a way which *might* cause unintended consequences when multi'ing up with another train: it would need a 'sequence test' under non-railtour conditions. Yes, we had examined this possibility prior to this outing but eventually concluded the above.

I believe they're huts for the permanent-way gangers to take rest and shelter in.
