@alteori I think Marvel probably wants to go female focused because they are harder to cancel (looking at the Jonathan Majors situation). As a production company that creates long winded stories that span years, they would rather build their business around people that are safe to market even if it means deviating from the source, sacrificing quality and not what the fans want. They believe eventually fans will just roll with it. I believe it's more about money then an agenda.

She loves X-Men for the reason I stated above. The fact that they're all so different from one another yet still do their best to work together as a team resonated with her, something that she always wanted the real world to do but knows it can't. The X-Men literally made someone who did not care about superheroes at all into a fan. I don't know many superhero teams that can do that and it's a shame this reboot wants to change them at all. Sure hope this won't be the case.
@VenathTehN3RD10 ай бұрын
Agreed. It's an EXTREMELY reductive approach to the franchise. The reason why X-Men works so well as a message about bigotry is because it brings together characters of all kinds of different races, sexes, orientations, religions, and so on as a unified group under the "mutant" label, which allows the bigotry towards them to simultaneously serve as a stand-in for real-world bigotry while also providing fantastic representation for many different groups without diminishing any of them individually in order to emphasize the a specific trait. It's the same as the whole "The Force is female" gimmick. The Force is a universal property that exists in and around all living things without discrimination. Some may be more able to directly utilize it than others, but it still exists as a part of every living thing. Taking that universal feature of the story and saying "But now it's about WOMEnh" only serves to diminish its ability to impact a wider audience. It also makes it seem like the people in charge know nothing about the X-Men aside from the fact that it has "Men" in the title and are assuming that by default it must exclude women or something.

Not a girl, but the cringy and formulaic way they were handled always kind of bugged me, even as a kid when I couldn't quite put my finger on WHY it bugged me. As an adult, I feel like I can pinpoint one of the main reasons why I always disliked the nigh-inevitable "girl power" episodes of cartoons and t.v. shows: Because I'm just sexist, of course. Or also possibly because I never actually thought of the women any differently than the men until the show took an episode to specifically fixate on telling me that they're just as good as the boys. Like in X-Men: Evolution. At no point prior to the episode that went out of its way to have Cyclops and Nightcrawler inexplicably act like sexist dicks (which they'd never really done prior in the series) so that Jean could talk about how she feels like she's treated as the weaker sex (which she'd never even been hinted at feeling prior in the series) and form a one-episode an all-girls vigilante team, I literally never thought of the girls as being anything more or less than equals to the guys. Because prior to the episode where they specifically created a divide between them for the sake of telling a story about the divide between them, the writing never TREATED the female characters differently than the male characters. It's one thing if the show actually has consistent themes about discrimination, violence, etc., and actually addresses things in a fluid and believable way that carries through the arcs of the characters or story in general. Avatar and Static Shock, for instance, generally did a pretty good job of addressing issues like sexism and racism in a very fluid, grounded, and relatable way. But it's a very different thing when the characters just go drastically OOC for a single, one-off episode that seems to come completely out of nowhere and never seems to have an impact on anything again. That just makes it come off as if it's a 100% corporate-mandated "Battle of the Sexes" episode. Because who cares if the writing itself already depicts the women as strong characters in a completely natural way, we need to stop and just outright TELL those silly, clueless girls in the audience that they're strong independent women if we want them to understand it, right?

Lego did a study when they created the Lego Friends line for girls where they discovered that when a boy plays with a toy of a character, he tries to become the character, and when a girl does the same thing, she tries to make the character become her. So if you give a boy a Batman toy, he's gonna want to know everything there is to know about Batman, and he'll try to think and talk like Batman when he plays with the toy. The little girl on the other hand is going to make Batman go shopping, bake cookies, and go to the prom. That's not to say there aren't exceptions on both sides but that's the data that allowed Lego to finally get a foothold on the girls' market after decades of failed attempts. If you look at how women approach things like Star Wars or remakes of animated movie, is it any wonder that so many of them want to reinvent the IP, either by feminizing it or changing the main character to look like them?

I was watching a review on the Marvels recently, and it struck me just how misogynist this so called "female empowerment", push in Hollywood actually is. We see self-obsessed actresses talking only about how important they themselves are, and how everyone of the same ethnicity should look up to them for "representation", we see writers who create sociopathic, power hungry female characters, whose worst actions are excused as heroic, while all male characters are tacitly or overtly castigated, or missed out entirely. We see directors attack anyone who doesn't instantly admire what they do with vile insults. Rather than show women at their most relatable and heroic, we constantly see the most toxic form of femininity in the guise of "empowerment", narcissism, gas lighting, playing the victim, closedmindedness and lack of acountability. Hollywood couldn't have done a better job at showing women in a bad light if they'd tried. Heck, pick any movie with a traditional damsel such as original snow white, and you'll see a far more sympathetic and virtuous portrayal of a woman than what's going on now. Announcing a push for a "female lead x men", just seems more of the same, not representing actually heroic and selfless female characters like Rogue, Storm and Jubilee, just creating more selfish boarder line villains who mistreat and belittle the men around them. I have never read them, but I gather that in the comics the real She hulk was an actual heroic character motivated by selflessness and the desire to do the right thing! The sad thing is, X men, with their message of unity and their fight to preserve peace between humans and mutants could've made for a film with an actually good "message", if they'd gone down the route of the 90s cartoon, but of course, like almost everything in Hollywood, it's got to be "female lead", which unfortunately these days, seems to be a synonym for more of the same. Whatever happened to good, as in not only well-written, but morally good, likable and actually relatable and selfless, female characters?

The five main characters are Rand, Mat, Perrin, Nynaeve, and Egwene, with the first three being male, but if you were to choose the main character out of those five, it would be Rand. He’s the most important character by right of who and what he is (not trying to spoil too much), and is the main focal point (the main one, not the only one) of the The Wheel of Time. Just about everything leads back to Rand one way or another. However, just because Rand is the most important out of the five, that doesn’t mean that the others aren’t important at all. Anyone can do good and help others.” Not “This group of people is the best by virtue of their gender or skin color or any other surface level trait” or “This group of people is intrinsically evil or inferior because of their surface level trait and needs to be taken down a peg or several” We won’t make the world a better place by tearing each other down, we make it better by helping each other, by protecting the ones we love. That’s the message I want to convey.

Why? Why female focused? X-men out of all the things? X-men has a big freaking cast of both males and females! There is Rogue, Storm, Jean, Mistique, Psylocke, Kitty Pride, plenty of women! And plenty of guys too! And ironically, removing guys they will lose most of the small female audience they'd want to aim at. Women like eye candy too and competent men, not a fumbling fools so female characters can look better in comparison.
@stevew851310 ай бұрын
What's also annoying is the "bait and switch" method of pulling audiences in for a movie or TV show centered on an already established male hero and then constantly degrading him to build up a female replacement character when the audience didn't know the main guy was even going to be replaced. A replacement that displays absolutely none of the qualities of a hero, basically she's a snide and condescending bully-ish person who had everything given to her. Because that's who the writers are in real life, they've moved their "Mean Girls" schtick from the school cafeteria to Twitter - and now everything has to be about self-inserts. "Because I want to see myself reflected onscreen". Maybe entertainment needs psychological testing before allowing people into it to screen out narcissists, predators, and sociopaths. Take a TV show whose audience is predominantly women, and then for the next season change it to something more male-focused. Take whatever "Real Housewives" show is popular and then change it over to a dirt bike racing reality show, and when viewers complain say "this wasn't made for you" and other insults on Twitter/X. Demean the entire female population of the world, and then have the gall to later complain about losing ratings and saying "women aren't supporting us". See how well that works out.

There is a superhero subgenre that is already geared towards women, if studios really wanted to push that. It's called "magical girls", and it's also not hard to bring men into these sorts of shows, with a little retooling. Madoka Magica being a great example of bringing in male viewers to a traditionally female genre, although that was more about specifically targeting men. My Little Pony was designed for little girls but it attracted an unexpected big audience of men, and it didn't require gender swapping all the girl ponies. Expanding your audience can be done, and it doesn't have to destroy the core of the series.
@MrQuantitySquare10 ай бұрын
Idk, the "there should be more women in the team" really depends on the story? Like, if women wanted to be a part of the conflict? I kinda get about the representation thing, but for me... A movie with a story has "a story" and everything depends on the "Story" idk why people say like, "Noo, you represented us in the wrong way" But aren't all people different? not because a character in the movie has the same gender, race or what as yours, that doesn't represent you? That's just the story and their character? Idk, just my thoughts.
@colbyfromage10 ай бұрын
Love the use of scientific studies! Yes this is what we need more of! I agree with you on all counts with this movie. As a woman, a “focused on the women” X-Men makes my interest fade immediately. I would add there is one very visceral violent urge women do have evolutionarily, and that is the “mother bear” insanity. Having 4 kids, I have experienced this - your kid is threatened and every cell in your body goes into “I will rip this threat into shreds and destroy it down to its atoms”, and you lose all regard for personal safety or whether or not you’re strong enough. This is a SUPER rare phenomenon (I’ve only had it happen a few times and my kids are grown) and somehow your biology just knows when it is necessary. If they focused on the strengths of women in the ways we are biologically strong (instead of the ways men are biologically strong, just in women), I think it would really resonate with audiences. One reason Sarah Connor was so iconic is she was the ultimate mother bear. That’s real stuff.

@grahamstrouse116510 ай бұрын
Rogue was probably my fave X-Man was teenager in the ‘80s. The female characters were definitely drawn in a way that would appeal to teenage boys but they also had very relatable backstories. You could vibe with what they were going through. Rogue’s mutant power, her ability to absorb powers (and psyches) from anyone she touched was really strong, and also really tragic, they eventually had her yeat Carol Danvers’ powers 1) to provide a means to get her to shift her allegiance from Magneto to Charles & 2) to make her more useful role the team on a day-to-day basis. Most of the time her mutant gift was more of a curse. It’s something that anyone whose ever struggled with extreme loneliness & a a fear of intimacy can relate to, I think. (BTW: The best part of the first X-man movie, IMO, was the father-daughter dynamic between Logan & Rogue. It’s not too late, Feige! Anna Paquin is still in her early 40s. You can still have her steal Carol’s powers! Might want to just leave it at the. Flight, strength & durability, though. Let her keep the laser blasts. I could tolerate Carol as a squishy energy projector.)

"We don't need you to market it for us!" Yes, yes, yes! They really don't see the problem here. Plenty of ladies like to go see a good action movie. And they go see an action movie BECAUSE it's an action movie and that's what they want to see. Mucking around with the formula doesn't just alienate the male audience but the female audience there were already inclined to see that kind of movie without the payoff of bringing in a broader female audience because they... just... don't want to see that kind of movie. "Women aren't being included" not because they are somehow being locked out of the genre but because it's not their interest. If a woman wants to see a movie that interests her, she can go see it. Thinking that women will want to see a movie entirely because there are prominent characters with whom they share genitalia is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure the old MCU had plenty of ladies in the audience without feeling the need to pander. Just make a good movie and the audience will sort itself out.

The reason these studios feel that they need to be doing this I suspect is because at some point in time a set of people calling themselves feminists who are no such thing and are actually people who have a grudge or deep-rooted animosity towards the male gender as a whole got into these companies and started to preach the gospel of their twisted version of what feminism is. That's why the movies have gotten more and more terrible it's not because it's female focus at all The aim is actually to destroy the franchises because it upsets men.
@sianais10 ай бұрын
It's not just to upset men, it's to take away everything they think men have over them because they're the ones with internalized misogyny. They devalue everything female and then they target males. They destroyed rom-coms. Those were a thing when I grew up. But toxic witch after toxic witch tore into everything from Barbies to Disney Princess movies. But romcoms, films that use to stand up there with action films of yesteryear, are forgettable cinema nobody expects to be remembered now. 50 Shades and Twilight were the most notable romance films of the 21st century. Because they ignored the feminist propaganda and did the same tropes women liked without shame. It wasn't good storytelling but it wasn't ashamed to give the dramatic bs women like. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, bs happens, they have babies, happily ever after. But they already taught the girls and women who liked them to be ashamed again, so there's nothing left on the female end to destroy. Something might break through, but the genre is dead. So now the target is everything male. Good luck. I'd say y'all had comics to seek haven in like romance readers do with novels, but those rancid women and weak-willed men already destroyed that too. And video games. They can't touch sports though.
@sjent10 ай бұрын
_people calling themselves feminists who are no such thing and are actually people who have a grudge or deep-rooted animosity towards the male gender as a whole_ That is a feminist. Feminism was never about equality. Anyone familiar with history of this cancerous cult will tell you that. It was always about bashing men and endless entitlement and privileges for women, with no responsibilities attached. It is not something new, from suffragettes to 4th wave, it is all the same shit, only goalposts are moving. There are some feminists that genuinely believe all those things, but they are a tiny minority and do not represent movement as a whole.
@openyoureyes909jones610 ай бұрын
That theory makes more sense than anything I could come up with tbh. Everything you said is true, I think there is also another reason why they “keep” presenting a particular point of view. They think that this is important. They think that it’s important and their friends and colleagues think that. So when they are looking to produce a new movie/tv show, they are wanting it to be successful…they also want to include this very important point of view. They know there are people out there who will not agree, but they think those people are wrong (or in the best case, ignorant) and need to be shown they are wrong. If It doesn’t do well, then it’s not that their product was bad…it’s that it was made to fail by that wrong group of people….and they double down. There are a few who are doing this as a grift but I don’t think that’s most of them.

I'm particularly blown away by Marvel's attempts to make Carol Danvers a thing when they've never really tried to giver her a personality. The only characterization they give her is that "she strong", "most powerful", and yet no one likes her because no one gives a shit about how powerful she is when she's boring and has zero personality. Even better they don't even realize they were far more successful with that kind of a character with Rogue from the X-Men. I consider Rogue to be one of the most powerful X-Men. When I see her in a story I fully expect her to kick ass. I LOVE seeing Rogue in action. I LOVE her personality. I love how goddamn beautiful she is. And I love her relationship with Gambit. Ironically you can solve the Captain Marvel issue with Brie no longer interested in the role nor can she carry it anyway by introducing Rogue and have her drain Carol of her powers putting her into a coma and taking her place as one of the post powerful X-Men as long as you do it like they did in the comics which these days is asking for too much to have source material accuracy.🤷

It's like a huge double-standard, shows such as Sex and the City/And Just Like That or Desperate Housewives and Barbie 2023 are created for a predominantly female audience and successful in their own right, if men wanna go along for the ride then so be it, yet genres for a typically male audience must not be accessible for women, but in some cases have the males take a back seat in order to shine bright thanks to the likes of Kathleen Kennedy to feminize traditionally male franchises. I mean how many middle-aged women grew up with Star Wars or Indiana Jones? There have been a plethora of great female characters up to the mid 2010s, but many nowadays are just a bad carbon copy of the badass females from yesteryear. Now women can do it all, and much better then any man of course even if half his size, and without the need to hone her skills or learn to control her abilities, and cannot be seen to take a harsh beatdown if indeed a PG-13 flick (the Airport battle in 'Civil War' is a prime example!)

Yup and we see the same thing with the Insomniac games leak showing their X-men game with Jean as the lead cause the point is to push out the main audience to replace with the grifters to control everything cause that's what its always about CONTROL

16:17 Power Rangers cameo! Yoshi Sudarso! Koda/Dino Charge Blue! Hyperforce Silver/Green! I know others stuff he's been in. 'Bullet Train', 'Buffalo Boys', etc. I'm a Power Rangers franchise follower since Childhood, watched everything since. So, PR is like family to me. Another franchise with a good balance of females as superheroes and villains alongside the males (not on each team per se, but collectively).

Of course people will hate it. Marvel must know. So Im starting to think they are trying to piss off fans on purpose and have excuse to call them villains. I just dont know why.

Bruhhh fr. I gravitated towards nerdy boy things specifically because it's cool and not some feel-good girly stuff (and ngl, lots of eyecandy when I grew older).
