After the end of the Religious Orders in Portugal in the 19th century, the abolishment of the Monarchy in 1910 and the Carnation Revolution in 1974 this lands were casually given out to either landowners who got the land from either buying or inheriting them or (especially after the revolution) were given to entire communities which gradually developed into the comunitarism practise. There isn't any academic debate to be had; there's a correct answer and there's a racist pseudohistorical narrative which rejects the answer which actual historians universally agreed upon. In framing the scenario as if there are two 'extremes', he lent legitimacy to colonialist views; even if unintentionally. And using a picture of real-world Africans to visually represent "barbarism and tribalism" heavily implies that the colonialist narrative is, to at least some extent, true Modern Cody recognizes that his decision to play into that "two sides" approach to the morality of colonialism was deeply racist, even though that was not his intention when making the video.

Got introduced to Alternative History through your Red Dawn scenario, it's Fascinating that you even made a Novel based around a scenario you never got around to talking about

what I like about alternate history, and it is a thing that I think you do really well in your videos, is that by presenting this speculative alternative, you show how big of an impact the actual history has had on our culture, technology beliefs, and just the world in general. the two best videos you did the really illustrates this is the one about "what if the great lakes of north America" didn't exit" and your "if the moon was inhabitable". you do a great job Cody, keep it up. and remember to take care of yourself.

Oh man. I have seen many KZbinrs rip apart other channels or videos in this style. But doing this with your own past self … that is high level. Respect!

This channel was one of the sources that fostered my love for history and led to me taking more studies into it to eventually try and pursue some type of historical or literary degree. So, thanks man. Even if the old videos appeared to have aged poorly, we're always gonna beat ourselves up over past work after we've improved so much. Pat yourself on the back for coming so far.

Cody! Don't sell yourself short! Your content was, is, and always will be amazing!!! Also, it is my firm belief that Cody's best video is "What if KZbin Destroyed us all?" A video that I fully believe 201% deserves a sequel.

You're a person who has learned and grown, and taken the time to criticality analyze exactly how you've grown and changed. I respect that so much, and can only hope to emulate that within my own ethos

I smiled the entire time watching this because I relate to this so freaking much. My speech pattern drives me NUTS in my first videos from like 2011-2013. It’s like I was trying to be “too professional” It’s a hard lesson on KZbin to loosen the hell up and enjoy what you’re doing.

It’s nostalgic seeing Cody’s old videos that I haven’t seen since high school. The Godzilla video was my first introduction to this channel and I have not regretted it since I look forward to my alternate history fix when Cody uploads a video. Cheers to 10 years and many more years to come.

Funnily enough I remember beings Iike 9 years old when this came out totally forgot it came from you. That’s actually how I originally found your channel. Then I stated to watch some of your other videos at the time and I actually got into the alt history through you. But never really understood it I was way too young. Now I’m 17 stressing about rapping up my last year of high school. Man does time fly about a year ago I got really invested in alternate history. And started watching your channel about the same time. For the better of for worse you changed my life. Thank you for everything Cody! ❤

Agreed. Godzilla being real could go any number of ways thanks to the different continuities. Is he the only Kaiju running around, or do others show up? Would we be able to build weapons to fight them like Mecha Godzilla? Would Ultraman show up?!

Cody, you are one of my favorite channels, and the channel that I have subscribed to for the longest. I have been with you since 2014, ever since the "What if the Americas never existed?" video. You have grown tremendously, both in the context and quality of your videos, and in your personal life. You were still in high school back when I first discovered and subscribed to you. Now, you are married and have a child. I was in 7th grade when I discovered you. Now, I have finished my fourth year of college, but I have not graduated yet. I am so glad that you have improved the quality and content of your videos. From 2014-16, you often spent the first half of your video summarizing the real history behind the topic of your alternate scenario. You only discussed your actual scenario in the second half of your video, but mostly provide mere generalizations. You justified your short generalizations by saying "this is just one of the many possibilities. We will never know how...", which left the audience in a cliffhanger. Now, since around 2017, you have changed for the better. Your new videos are about your alternate history scenario first and foremost. You now only provide necessary real-world information during the first few minutes of your scenario, and spend the remaining bulk of your video on your scenario. I appreciate this change because an alternate history channel should be about telling the story of the scenario. Your old style of videos made me disillusioned for some time, but your change is what kept me loyal to this channel. It was also this previous satisfaction where I eventually discovered Whatifalthist. my other favorite channel. He has since transitioned away from alternate history, and is dedicated to real history, geopolitics, current events, and anthropology. I am also glad you reformed before Whatifalthist's genre switch in order to provide a beacon of hope for the Alternate History community in KZbin and beyond. I love this channel, and I wish the best for a new generation of objective and realistic alternate history KZbinrs and creators to follow your lead. 8:54 I never knew the Tyler from Suggestion Box was a different Tyler from your brother. I always thought they were the same Tyler.

I've literally been watching this channel since the "What if the Roman Empire never collapsed" series and all I can say Cody is that you've grown so much as a content creator. The videos you make now are so much better than your old videos but this video was a nice little trip down memory lane. I even remember when you finally got a good mic and you sounded so different that I thought they had replaced you as the narrator lmao.

Well as a long time viewer since 2014-2015 throughout multiple channels of both you and your brother, I do really love the new content but sometimes when your old content pops up I don't hate it, you helped fuel my love of alternate history throughout some pretty formative years of my life. Thank you Cody even if your old content wasn't great back then I and many others loved it.
@RegentPandora8 ай бұрын
If we go by the logic of "if a video's older than 2 years, then I hate it", then eventually, this video will be outdated and unrepresentative of Cody's channel nowadays.

Rewatched some of your old videos recently and while I wouldn’t say they’re terrible your content has definitely improved over the years. One of my favorite channels on KZbin when I first started watching and still the case today.

One of my favorite things I've realized is that virtually every single fan of alternate history can say, "Well it started because I got this book from an author called Harry Turtledove."
@jakeaurod Жыл бұрын
Except me. A cousin tried to get me into Turtledove. At first I was intrigued, and then he told me that WWII had aliens and I noped right out. I like Alternate history. I like science fiction. I don't want them together.

Depends upon the age of the person asked. For instance, Turtledove himself credits L Sprague de Camp in the introduction to The Enchanter Completed.

Boy does AlternateHistoryNY brings me back. I remember starting that channel for fun but not being able to continue it…(Life getting in the way and such). Just wanted say Cody it’s always good to in at yourself for self reflection (trust me a few videos Id want to redo because they don’t reflect the way I think now or were so improbable or I’ve learned a lot more then I knew compared to 2012). Most importantly though I’m glad you’ve stuck with it and Im more glad your channel has thrived!

I think this is the first channel I watched on KZbin, a friend introduced me to it probably 7 or 8 years ago now. It's kinda crazy to think of how KZbin has (more or less) become the default means of entertainment in my life since then and the hours I've spent on it.

Been here about 5 years, thanks for being a constant. Your channel helped me get further into alternate history and by extension made me more interested in non…alternate history (primary history? Real history?). It’s a fun and interactive way to practice critical thinking. Thank you Edit: Turns out its 7, came for the fallout videos when it was new

I really like the sentiment of "Not taking alternatehistory seriously and consider it fiction". I mean a small thing like moving a sandwich shop to a diffrent location can have a big effect, but there is no way to know. Especially if it is in Sarajevo.
