Alton Towers Vlog June 2018

Join me and Charlotte as we head to Alton Towers to check out the latest updates, along with riding on our favourite coasters at the park. After over 3 months of operation we check out how Wicker Man is running compared to when it first opened back in March 2018. Along with that we talk about this years Scarefest event, including a first look at the construction taking place over in the towers ruins.
We also take a stroll through Cloud Cuckoo Land and have a closer look at Nemesis Sub Terra along with sharing our thoughts on what we'd like to see happen to both of these areas of the park. All of this and more mixed in with plenty of off ride footage from the various different attractions at Alton Towers!

Hey everyone! Going to Alton Towers soon? Here’s some tips from a Coaster Enthusiast 1. The smiler is COMPLETELY safe. The crash was a human error and the media reported it badly, giving AT a bad rep. 2. If you’re waiting for something (i.e. a friend to show up) Oblivion has a constant five minute queue. 3. If you want to go on Wickerman with the fastest queue possible, arrive at the park at 9 and get on it first thing. 4. All coasters are more intense (and fun) at the back, however the park is beautiful and you may want to ride the front. 5. For the last hour of the day, Nemesis is always a walk on. It may say it’s closed but if the chains not there, you can ride. I rode it 10 times in one day thanks to this :) 6. Rita isn’t worth it if you’ve already been on a launch coaster (i.e stealth, formula rossa) and the queue is over half an hour. 7. The £5-£7 refillable cups are a bargain and you should definitely buy one. 8. Get your car park tickets in the middle of the day, because at the start and end the queues are loooooooong. 9. Or if you don’t wanna do that, go on the biggest rides in the middle of the day as everyone else is having lunch. 10. Finally, stay safe, don’t be stupid and have fun!

I wouldn’t get the refillable bottles if you don’t mind water. You can just bring a bottle from home and there are various water fountains you can use for free

I’d recommend the smiler at the end of the day because that’s when the queues are short for it and you might get dizzy for a while so you would want to do it at the end. I was slightly dizzy even when I got home from it but it is a good ride

Exams are more nerve wracking than any coaster. Approach them in the same way as you would a coaster you were nervous about. Afterwards you will feel fine. Best of luck 👍

I love this video. It’s 2 years today since I became an enthusiast and this was the first video of yours that I watched. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pre book tickets for any of the parks for opening weekend because they went so quickly but luckily I managed to get tickets for Thorpe park on July 11th, which will be the first time I’ve been there for about 6 years. I’ll have 5 new creds to get there and I cannot wait to get back to the parks! 👍😁

So I was just at Alton Towers 2 weeks ago, and what really set Hex over the edge for me was the SMELL in the second preshow chamber. The dusty smell of the Towers just isn't something you can replicate, and that age and history combined with the storytelling used makes me feel that Hex is possibly one of the best themed dark rides in the WORLD. It's even better than a good number of Disney attractions IMO. Well, the age and seeing the actual chained oak just down the road from the resort. THAT. was cool.

Great to hear your various musings on Alton Towers. I think our views on this iconic park are pretty similar!! I was disappointed to see the state it was in when I visited around 2015 but to be fair, having had a season pass for the first time ever in 2017/2018 and visited a few times, it does seem like they're making constant improvements to try and get it back to its glory days. Also you've got to hand it to them for Wicker Man. I hope they funnel more and more cash into the park over the next five-ten years, especially on staff/operations and general upkeep.

That is a shame about the Wicker Man effects. It does seem like a one off though, as everything was fine when I visited just over a week ago. I do hope they maintain Wicker Man, and the rest of the park, well moving forwards. :)

I think Sub Terra looks just great as it is. Adds to the rawness and vibe of it. Sad that it has been closed for so long. This was an attraction I hadn’t heard of until I got to the park but left there with this one at the forefront of my mind. A very immersive experience. Good actors as well. I ended up heading the escape and was thinking “Why me?” I was out of my comfort zone but really enjoyed it immensely. Best surprise of the day and there was nothing else like it in the park. Second best attraction of the day to Nemesis. Great coupling of themes ❤️

I rode the smiler for the first time about a month ago, we fast tracked and we got to the front of the que and I started tearing up because I was TERRIFIED we actually got put in the front row and I said to my dad before we sat down “I don’t want to do it” and he shouted “SIT DOWN” and I rode it and I’m so glad my dad got me to because that is now probably my favourite ride😂❤️

Alton tower's holds many memories for me, all good. I used to go twice a year. Loved it. Two years ago, I went after a two year gap. The degeneration of the park was heart breaking. It truly now is running on reputation alone. Your video says to me, andi love your channel Shaun, that the park hasn't really improved. Turning the fire off on your biggest attraction??? Crap. And the complaints I made aboutSub Terra, and the nemesis queue, which was acknowledged and apologised for by management, have not changed. Towers loving care was a con for me. Such a shame. The Alton magic died. 4pm close in June??? Park's done I fear. Great content Shaun. As always.

I went to towers on Wednesday and loved it as usually but I do think now that the smiler needs a bit of a TLC for example making sure all the projects are working in the indoor que section more theming around the ride and in the que line and etc who agrees ??????

It just needs a major cleanup, it dont need additions what so ever. Recently they fixed The Smiler's speakers... Its now 2x louder then the start of the season which is fab so its small stuff.

It is extremely early, they used to employ more technicians to build the mazes so it could start later. Now they employ less meaning it starts much earlier and the towers have to close!

Great vlog, looks like you both had a fun day. Myself and my family have always loved visiting Alton Towers (I first visited in 1992), but the lack of care/funding for general maintenance and operations are really starting to show. I'm not sure what it will take to see the investment come back, but the park is a shadow of it's former self. It's sad to see a once magical place being run into the ground. It's now running on former reputation, and that won't last for much longer. Wicker man was a huge success in my view. I really hope that there are bigger and better things to come, along with better upkeep and staffing levels for the park ,and less emphasis on business models relying on hotel expansions. Who wants to pay to stay if the park isn't worth visiting??

It’s depressing how inefficiently oblivion is running now it seems like it’s taking around 150 seconds per train which causes really long waits when the Park is busy. Then there is always a crazy long wait on the break run before you can get off. Unsurprisingly the station is really understaffed. Also why are single rider queues not a thing here anymore, I’ve just got back from a Europa Park trip and they work perfectly there.

Shawn, you can't be more correct! As a regular visitor to Alton Towers I have noticed a few run down areas of the park. This includes Galactica, which needs a new paint job and Nemesis sub terror. But on the other hand, I love what they are doing to Duel. Great vlog.

I’ve been to Disney way to many times (my parents love it) but despite that my mom said that her favourite coaster was still Nemesis, and we last went in 2011. So I convinced them to go again and it was my first time on the coasters, and I decided that my favourite coaster was Smiler, but Nemesis is 2, Wickerman 3 and Galactica 4.

I know this is never going to happen but i would love if Alton Towers went full coaster and ditched cloud cuckoo land, for me cuckoo land isn't doing enough for the park and Alton could do a lot better if they planted more thrill seeking coasters and a couple more dark rides. Hi Shawn thank you for Alton Towers Vlog. We are going Monday 25th. The website didn't didn't say what time it shuts so thanks for letting us know we are catching the train. Ok I felt the same at one point that one point just had to be 4 years but...it all changed on my Galactica experience I used the vr because I was scared of it being air...but just before the corkscrew the vr came off and I did a loop and felt an amazing feeling it was after that I went on oblivion now my only fear is nemesis but because I went on Galactica\air and oblivion...I can do anything

Love the videos! Great to get a feeling of being there. I definitely hope Cedar Point brings back a new dark ride. Doesn't seem right to not have any. I used to ride the Pirate Ride and Disaster Transport over and over back in the day. The Pirate Ride building is actually still there I think between Raptor and Blue Streak so they can use it for something.

They stoped operations on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory becuase operations weren’t making any money so hopefully they will do some rethemeing then open it back up because if they still have those chimneys up it might come back and they have that temporary wall so you never know

Great to see your opinions on the park. I went for the first time in over 10 years about a month ago, having been several times a year as a kid. I broadly agree with most of what you said, and the park certainly seems to have let itself go a bit. Absolutely loved Thirteen. And found Nemesis and Oblivion are still ace. The Smiler is too brutal for me though, maybe I'm too old for that kind of thing now but cant see myself going on it again. Air/Galactica is still slow and boring, and changing it to VR doesn't seem to ave improved it really. Also agree with you that the staggered opening just isn't cricket, and 4 pm is too early to close. Even on a quiet day when we got there before opening, it wasn't long enough. Felt like a half day which just isn't worth the money.

Alton towers just keeps going down hill all the time operations are horrid wickerman is never running correctly and staff don’t seem to enjoy it and smiler gets worse ever time round

Spoke to one of the ride Ops (Not TPW Lee Wood) of Wicker Man a few weeks ago & asked about the lack of fire on the Wicker Man structure - & he claimed some of the fire proof protection on the structure had started to actually melt, due to the heat from the flames. I have NO idea how true it is, just what I was told. Thanks for another great video.

finally got my first ride on wickerman yesterday, 40 ish minute wait but got the front seat experience, it is a brilliant ride. Also went straight on this morning and the fire was working.

I went Alton Towers yesterday and all of the queues where over 1 hour long. also the wicker was closed for most of the day for some reason? there was some Alton Towers workers over at nemesis sub terror holding some equipment and walking around the place.

Hey Shawn! From what I've seen it's going to be an interim launch coaster with a freefall and backwards sections! I have a strong suspicion the ride cars will be theme to hagrids bike and side car! The track for the vertical point is already down!

Haha, I was there the day you were there. It was my first time at Alton towers and on any rollercoaster. I was scared before but absolutely loved the day and place. Nemesis was my fav.

The sub-terra ripsaw site is a massive area - heard big rumblings about a wing coaster going in! Makes sense as Francis Jackson wants to turn towers into a coaster capital 👍🏼 heard the reasons why the Wickerman fire effects have been disabled due to it damaging the structure, and the operating cost

Going to Alton Towers next Tuesday and Wednesday with my boyfriend and staying in the hotel ^^ SUPER excited as it's been about a year since I've been, and I haven't stayed at the hotel before :)

I respect you're honesty and openness here Shawn and I think everyone does. There's a lot of Alton Towers bias in the community and people can't see (Wicker Man aside) that this park is going to the dogs a bit. I know you didn't say that but I can tell you want to sometimes and honesty is endearing as long as it's done right in a constructive way. I actually e-mailed Nick Varney himself and got some reply from an assistant about the state of Merlin parks and they won't listen, so voices like yours are what they need to hear. Also, that rapids incident was blatantly personal beef.

I went to Alton Towers today and yesterday (we stayed overnight) for my birthday. We had Merlin Passes so we could get in early. Apparently the new ride The Wicker man was supposed to be opened early but it wasn't. Later on in the day we were going to go on it. Because we had Merlin passes we used Fastrack. As soon as we had reached the entrance the speakers set of and apparently the ride broke and was facing some technical difficulties. After that we had to wait another two hours before it was fixed. We were furious!

As of May Half Term, there are no staggered openings in the holiday periods now except for Duel, Rapids and Mine Train at 11, so hopefully this is a good sign for next season

Enjoyed the vlog. You Can tell you no longer work for AT, not in a bad way, feel like you're actually giving your honest opinion rather having to be guarded. It's always difficult not saying how you really feel on social media when you work somewhere. Loving the honesty! If somewhere is lacking then it should be called out. Not every vlog needs to be 100% positive, saying that 100% whinging vlogs aren't fun to watch either lol.

I always like to be honest and share my true thoughts. Many of the things mentioned in this vlog (mainly operational staffing cuts) are the reasons I didn't want to continue working for the park

Theme Park Worldwide yeah I can imagine. Seems a shame that it seems to have gone downhill yet attendance figures are up. Where's the incentive to get better if you can get by without enough staff etc. Not good. I've been to too many parks where there have been poor operations. Yet prices still increase and people still visit, so annoying.

I hope they've sorted out the Galactica queue - back in April people didn't know to queue either left or right for VR or non-VR so what should've been two short queues ended up in one long jumbled queue. Every time I got down to the station, the non-VR queue was empty!
