In my JW childhood, no Smurf’s. No trolls. No Harry Potter. No Lucky Charms cereal. No Unicorns. No Little Mermaid.😢 I actually had a revelation today that I must have mentally blocked out most parts of my childhood and school experience because I can barely remember it and I think it’s because the JW rules and outsider ness of it all was so crushing. I think I need therapy. Thanks for a great video, as always, Jake!

No, you haven't blocked it out. It's just that the strongest memories are formed when there are lots of emotion evolved. And witness children are both taught that emotions are from satan and to not have too much fun or "fun with a balance" so there is never any emotional experiences for witness children, except when they are running from bullies in school. And that running from bullies is because they insist on being different in ridiculous ways, and believing that unnecessary suffering brings joy to god.

Also unwritten but ingrained in the culture is the notion that the better you are as a speaker and the better comments you give - this somehow equates to you being a better person in God's eyes. So God really loves all those smug polished speakers on JW Broadcast, but those too timid or shy to raise their hands to comment have nothing but God's disfavor! Really?

Two things that I've been able to realize since leaving the org: 1) Witnesses lie constantly, mostly from omission of crucial information. 2) There are a ton of unwritten rules you have to learn as a JW, rules that congregation culture enforces but are not explicitly in writing. It's interesting to think about, now that I'm out and working on purging my indoctrination.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was a big no-no in my circle. Pokemon was also alluded to from an assembly platform as being demonic. There was a shop in my town that sold crystals (ie. bits of rock) and that was out of bounds...as was yoga and "mindfulness" or other relaxation techniques. Buying raffle tickets was also wrong . Another unwritten rule was to not get involved in charitable work, eg. help fundraise for SPCA..or anything. The only acceptable use for your spare time was the public ministry. You would certainly get suspicious and judgmental looks if you engaged in any outside charitable work.

There are so many unwritten rules by the WatchTower. Do not befriend a "wordly person", no sports, do not try to be succesful, do not follow your dreams when the "world" is involved in your dreams, being rich is bad because of the greed and the whole 7 deadly sins and so on...

@Rupunzelsawake
@Rupunzelsawake 2 жыл бұрын
@@planetmut Yes it does. Do other charities prohibit their supporters from being involved with other charities like the JW organisation does? ( I dare say there are some other high control religions) One reason put forward by government for maintaining charity status for religious organisations is that members generally tend to support other charities. Not so for the JW organisation. They view the works of other charitable organisations as "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic", ie. a waste of time, energy and money. I remember hearing that from the platform in a kingdom hall on many occasions.

Definitely hit the nail on the head with this list! The experience with Watchtower constantly trying to control the members with "subliminal" hints via talks or their literature is super evident in everything that was mentioned. It almost paralyzed you from enjoying certain things like concerts, proms, etc. Because you'd fear others finding out or going to elders on you. Big props for the sex talking points as well, masturbation of course was another huge NOPE. Lol glad to be free of that bullshit🤣

When I was a kid ( I grew up a JW) I got in trouble for saying "holy moly", mum said, "only Jehovah is 'holy' " I said, "What about Jesus?", and she said "Oh yeah, I forgot about Jesus". I was allowed to watch the Smurfs, but it was ruined when I heard all the stories about demonic Smurfs. And even though I live in Australia, we heard the story about the Smurf plush getting up and running out of a kingdom hall. Used to scare the crap out of me as a child. Instead of reassuring me and telling me it was nonsense my parents just told me to "Pray for courage" instead.

Pokémon was a non no for sure. We had a local needs addressing it when they first came out because the name meant "pocket monster". I can still remember the elder that gave the talk. Culturally at one point braided extensions were frown upon for sister of African descent. If they were to long or not a discreet color it was a problem. Locs for sisters of African descent was a big no no. Made you "a part of the world". Acrylic nails that were too long or too colorful. There was even a local needs about coloured contacts when those became popular. Heels being too tall. Dangling earrings. Bright colors. Bright lipstick or a lined lip (back in the 90s - early 2000s this was a thing). I live in a predominantly black country. There were different rules for black witnesses than there were for other ethnicities. Caucasian/ Biracial elders usual served a POs and elders in the congregation. They and their familys were hardly in door to door. Their daughters were permitted to wear short shorts and participate in track meets, swim meet etc. While the black children weren't and if it was found out that you did participate, it would merit a Shepharding call for the family head. Actual meditation was a no no. Wearing "crystals" big nope. Even though the high priest wore them as instructed by Sky daddy. Wind chimes on the house. Commenting on how pretty Xmas lights were. I got a fine roasting for that one December. I was about 7 yrs old and admiring them on the was to Thrusday night meeting.

I've never been a JW nor known personally anyone who was, but I find your videos really interesting because you think of new ways to explore cult psychology from a layperson's point of view. Your perspective as a victim of this type of mass corporate manipulation is so valuable to me, and I'm sure to many others, even some you may not expect. Like Millstone Research says, cults are cultures - this info is useful to me even as an outsider to your struggle, helping me understand manipulation and groupthink. Your episodes are clearly written with diligence and passion. Thank you. Also, you're hilarious. I often laugh at loud at your jokes and editing style. Super duper good vid Jake. Here I am commenting a third time like a crazy person, but I wanted to say how excellent it was! 1. Part of my Smurf experience: Old relative who went to one of the first Gileads came to town and told the Smurf walking out of the KH story. Grandma believed said relative a freaked out. Dad, who was misogynist, unknown to me at that time, thought it was stupid. Mainly because of the source (a woman), and said relative would get money from Grandma, money that he wanted (found out much later, WTF?). He eventually stole some money from Grandma, but that is another story. So, our town got to know all about how Smurfs were demonized, but my fam still watched them, sort of on the down low. We even got Smurf glasses from McDs or Burger King or something, partly out of spite*? Collected them all! Then the cheap things broke! 2. One of the times I did EMDR an image of me walking out of the hall just like the Smurf came to mind. I laughed. My favorite EMDR memory so far. *Like, see! She's a nut case! (She was, but so were all the men he listened to with reverence.) Thanks for reading this too long comment!

I was born into the JW culture, I was never baptized, so I was considered non practicing, but I was never disassociated, so my parents never shunned me, but they always held out hope that I would "come around" someday. We were allowed to watch Star Wars, Disney movies, Smurfs, etc. I think my parents understood that it was harmless entertainment not demonic magic, lol. But our cousins were much more restricted in their daily lives. My Aunt got really upset about our watching One Day At A Time because of the language, and we were like, yeah we know, we don't swear, but it didn't bother my parents if we watched that. So many crazy rules, it could be stifling, I'm thankful my parents gave us some leeway. My sister and I are out especially after all of the csa scandals and numerous other stuff that came out recently and our own personal journeys. My parents both died believing and that breaks my heart. I don't think they ever even heard half of the things that I knew about and I wish I could have questioned them about it all. Would they have ever left if they had known the full picture? I want to thank you for sharing your story and your experiences. It means so much to know that others have lived through the same things that we have. Stay strong and know that you are supported by the ex JW community. Good luck in all of your endeavors.

My self appointed annointed mother is definately a grandparent who trys to preach to my children. In 2005 she attempted to kidnap my 2 daughters when the org brought out go bags In 2008 she told my doctors NOT to give me blood when I was rushed into hospital bleeding internally from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. When confronted she told me at least my 3 children would be raised as survivors of Armageddon. Then in 2015 she persuaded my eldest daughter to run away from home and live with her. She attempted to indoctrinated my daughter into JW and has destroyed my relationship with my daughter. Not only are my children and myself shunned by my birth mother but my eldest daughter shuns us too thanks to her.

I found my parents and friends would skirt around the entertainment unspoken rules alot with contradictory allowances. - Couldn't watch Basic Instinct, because it has the sex, and the Awake had an article calling it how for how bad it was (thanks for the recommendation Awake, I would defs find ways to watch movies they called out) - But was shown Terminator 2 as a pre-teen, which was quite violent, but was green lighted because the depiction of that bomb going off and the kids playground wiped out was "what Armageddon is going to be like" examples of this are endless. Good video sir

We had to wait at a customers home, I forget why, and it was a couple of house. He would never watch any movie that was R. We worked and lived in a resort area in Norther Michigan. Since we had to wait a few hours and the customers were not there at the time, it was a vacation home, I saw there was a VCR and movies. I popped in Clock Work Orange. LOL,, He never knew it was an X movie or close to it.

I have heard of some JWs not watching Star Wars or Disney or Marvel but most are huge fans. One person I knew loved marvel until the Scarlet witch, then stopped watching. As a kid my sister was not allowed smurfs or trolls. As a kid I was not allowed power rangers (too violent), the Simpsons (Bart made kids disrespect parents), Scooby-Doo, or unicorns. I remember getting a unicorn toy from a happy meal and crying because my parents were going to throw it away. They sawed the horn off with a kitchen knife so I could keep it. I wasn't into Pokémon, but I also don't think it was allowed where I lived. A friend once asked me in hushed tones if I liked twilight (she did). I was super into twilight until all the vampires = spiritism literature came out. I got rid of my books and bought and threw away the dvds more than a few times. The more I learn about cults as well as other churches/faiths the more I realize the witnesses are absolutely not unique in this and aren't the only ones with these "high" standards. Turns out the banned and frowned upon things from our childhoods were just a result of the mainstream Christian satanic panic of the 80s and 90s.

Which apparently isn't an unwritten rule in every congregation like I thought it was. But out in service or anywhere your around brothers in the congregation as a girl/woman you were supposed to let them go first and always walk a little ways behind them. I still do this to the point of being awkward every man I've ever dated at some point points this out to me. I guess there is some scripture about it somewhere but hell if I remember it now. I always also remember just random makeup being outlawed at at different congregations like massacre and eyeliner. I would stay at a new friends house and go to do my makeup for the meeting and be told no we don't wear massacre. Like who decided the black stuff I put on my eyelashes is a problem for someone else.
