The issue with portaling on dc, as you touched on, is that it will be abused as a logout macro essentially. What they hinted as a solution in poe2 with a save-state of your character seems like the better option, though that will probably not be entirely without flaws as well.

I think to me it's all about the time it takes, for either. If it's say, a 3 second animation to portal, then I don't see it being abused much because that's simply too long in the timeframe of most ARPGs, if it's 1 second then already that becomes much more likely to be abused. Save-state sounds ideal, I just hope the implementation kicks in quickly rather than some long delay and then save, as this would exacerbate the problem because now you're also dying in scenarios where you get disconnected, the game recognizes you were disconnected, but now you log back into an unrecoverable state that equates to dying from the disconnect
