Ciao everyone! This week I'm sharing do's and don'ts to build a sustainable wardrobe full of clothes you will actually wear. I'm sharing common lies and beliefs we tell ourselves about clothes - like why it feels like you have nothing to wear - and style tips to fix them! Whether you are learning about sustainable fashion, capsule wardrobes, or minimalism, I hope these tips give you something to think about! :)
I've been wanting to do this video for a while, and the format for it was inspired by Leena Norms and her video "Lies About Your Clothes to Unlearn in Your Twenties" - give it a watch here! • Lies about clothes to ...

Thank you for bringing up the “classic” issue. I spent years wearing colors that didn’t suit me bc I “needed” a black dress, black leather jacket, white tee, and white button up. I don’t look great in white or black and have dyed my whites and sold the rest. I had to accept that MY classics look different.

👍 I'm all for looking at this issue from a different pov! Unlike you those colors suit me but I spent years trying to wear colors that don't cos I'm a boho girl and the conventional 'wisdom' is that boho is all browns etc. Then I tried to move away from the boho thing and was unhappy. So now I'm trying to make boho work for me within my color palette. And dyeing some of my clothes is my current project!

I used to think very similar and finally woke up and realized I needed to buy and wear exactly what appeals to me and flatters me, not what some magazine’s editor says I should have. Every season I was all about “basics” like black, white, navy, etc. not embracing the fact that I am absolutely a bright color person! ❤️💙💜🧡

Thank you for this. I am coming to the realization that just because something is trending or is a “classic “ doesn’t mean it’s in my comfort zone. I love the look of blazers and jackets, but always end up taking them off because I feel constricted. Give me a comfy cardigan any day.

The bit that I struggle with is always the static image. For example somebody models an outfit complete with trench coat or biker jacket. But if you go out for lunch for example and take your coat off, you're now just wearing say basic jeans and t-shirt. The fully styled outfit just got you into the restaurant but no more as you can't really sit with your coat on. So for that reason I always find a blazer so much more versatile as I can keep it on and truly wear it as part of my outfit. For that reason I'd love to see you model some of your outfits when you take your coat off and put your handbag down - and see what is left! And if it still makes for a stylish outfit! Would love to see a part 2. I would be interested to see the basics versus the staples but I'm a bit intrigued.. At the end of the day I don't have to be able to classify an item of clothing to wear it and enjoy it! But I love your videos anyway.

Good point, Justine...I always view a trench coat or biker jacket as a way to stay warm and dry. A blazer, on the other hand, is a way to elevate an outfit.

Yes! You articulated so well what I am always thinking. I don’t live in an area where people even really see my outer wear other than when I walk in. Making it crucial to the outfit doesn’t work for me. One of my favorite things is a big scarf or wrap that can be worn with my coat but also used to drape over my shoulders if it’s chilly. The pattern still adds to the outfit. Xoxo
@michelepaccione8806
@michelepaccione8806 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think it's important to have outerwear that works with your wardrobe (and keeps you dry and warm), but I don't consider a coat part of an "outfit"-nor a purse, both of which you put away once you've arrived somewhere. I see a lot of capsule wardrobes on youtube that add a trench to something and consider that an entirely new outfit, or change the shoes to sneakers and consider that a new outfit too. Working in Manhattan, sneakers are necessary to get from one place to another because you walk so much in the city, but once you get there you change your shoes. And your bag depends on what you need to carry. I freelance, so sometimes bring my own laptop. That means I carry a laptop bag or backpack that day. I have nice laptop bags and backpacks, but don't consider them part of my outfit. I have a work partner who brings rolling luggage to the job....she got tired of lugging her laptop, shoes, purse, etc. I thought it was a brilliant idea.

"Define your own 'classics'." Holy shit --mind blown! I was starting to get there myself, w/the thought of a "style uniform" created from what I like/personally suits me. But I still thought my uniform needed to include the industry standard of classics. Which often age me and add a "dowdy" factor. But I thought, "It's just gotta be the fit!" And I was right, in part, when cropped cardigans came out that hit my right at my sweet spot. But... I'm left w/this feeling like, I fit in; I'm playing the part; but I don't feel like me. Starting now: Operation Discover My Own Classics!

Yup, finding your own style uniform is SO helpful! I've finally accepted mine and while it's currently reasonably in vogue I know it'll drop out again in the next few years; and I've decided I don't care. It suits me and it's extremely practical (I can transition it thru all seasons), so I'm keeping it.

Amazing video!!! Just wonderful. It took me 30+ year to realize that cotton white button down shirt is not my staple. I absolutely love that you encourage people to find their own style. Thank you!! Little tip that helped me, in case someone is struggling to find the staple. One day I sat down and wrote down my best outfits over the years. The ones that I loved felt great in. I thought of my best pictures, what was I wearing in them, etc. When I analyzed them for style elements. What did they had in common? I was trying to identify why I loved them so much. Was it the color, what is the fabric, was it the cut? And what do you know I realized that I love blouses in flowy fabrics over pencil skirts or body skiming skirts, I love layers, jackets, long cardigans etc. I love to layer my many jewelry. Yes the elegant pearl earrings did nothing for my body. Its shocking how this one exercise taught me.

My staples are weird, I suppose, as they’re mostly dresses. Knit dresses for the cold months, especially, what could be easier or more comfy?. I dutifully bought the black pencil skirt, yes it looks great. Do I wear it, no, it’s difficult to sit or walk in it. I’m glad I resisted the mega-hardware shiny black leather moto jacket, it never felt like me, I have no edgy, tough or rock chic in me. Roughed-up micro denim shorts? Never. I compromised on one “staple” and bought a softer, black suede one. I wore it once or twice, not one of my better investments. With your encouragement, I’m dressing more for the real me. I am what I am, a midle-aged, middle-class woman who likes quiet classics. I’m tired of trying to be a rock-festival boho chick.

I know the feeling. E.v.e.r.y summer I feel that I shouldget into Daisy Dukes and flowy bohemien dresses and tall boots; Well I'm middle aged and I've had cellulite from my butt to my knees since I was 16. The only reason for and the only time I felt good wearing shorts has been functionel because I was an athlete. On the court but otherwise? No! Not to mention the little bulge at my cecarien-scar, that the edges of lowrise Daisy's cut into like a knife. Big flowy dresses? I'm a EU size 4 on top, 6-8 on bottum and short. I look like I'm trying to save myself from a mile of bubblewrap while stepping on it and slipping like it was a banana peel 🤣 Long boots? I spend 14 years as an athlete, on a court running, jumping, stopping dead track and hurling around in the opposite direction at a second interval. I've got legs like a horses thighs and wear a size 3 shoe. It's not gonna happen. Yet, I've bought God knows how many distressed Daisy Dukes, bohemian dresses and long boots. I cant even get a rain boot above my ancle to fit 🙄 But that is all summer things that you HAVE to have. Summer staples. No. Not here. I'm a middle aged mama. I used to be a younger athlete that did'nt fit in it. I'm done spending money and feeling that bad about myself.

@@louiseerbslisbjerg7854 Haha I've stopped believing in the "flowy dress + tall boots" outfit in general. It looks amazing in pictures but it must be so uncomfortable to wear, you would either be freezing in the lightweight dress or get really sweaty legs under the boots depending on the weather. And denim shorts being comfortable is a complete myth. For me they always ride up when I walk and i don't like showing my butt cheeks in public. What I want most from my summer outfits is comfort. Something that is easy to throw on in the morning, doesn't turn me into a sweaty mess and doesn't get ruined when I sit down in the grass.

I confess I have even managed to combine several of these “beliefs” in the same purchases after slavishly following a couple of influencers for a while there. That is, I bought “classics” that aren’t really mine, in colours that didn’t suit me and styles that did not work for my actual life! When I went back to trusting my instincts, my wardrobe started to mirror my own unique style and actually work for me.

I bought the classic cream coloured trench coat which I've hardly worn as because I'm quite short and slim, I just feel it overpowers me. Also the colour seems to wash me out. Oh my gosh, yes to all of this! All of your advice is spot on. (Please do a part 2!) I've searched for and purchased a number of so-called "classics" over the years that didn't last in my wardrobe (dark-wash jeans, knee-high boots, crisp white button-down, etc.). I've also gotten staple vs. basic confused--especially when I first started my minimalism/slow fashion journey. I got really caught up in making sure that everything in my wardrobe was interchangeable and that I had all the basics--which, on the one hand was good, because I learned how to look at my wardrobe as a whole and make sure I had enough on hand to make a variety of outfits. BUT. I ended up with a wardrobe that I was eventually *super* bored with. I still have many basics, but it turns out that my actual staples are things like puff-shoulder or balloon-sleeve blouses, super chunky grandma-esque cardigans, high-waist wide-leg trousers, boxy/cropped tops, etc. And yes, I too have just swallowed influencer advice wholesale. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that the advice of influencers who live in sunny California on wardrobe "must-haves" are not going to work for me. (I live in Ohio! I can wear a lightweight jacket, let's see...approximately 2 weeks out of the year. So it doesn't make sense for me to have a collection of those jackets, no matter how cool they might look as a "third piece.")

You must feel good "joy" in the "classic" for it to be your own "classic". We try too hard to fit in the a mold that is harden, but the human mold is organic, living & breathing, always moving. Your defining the difference between a Basic and a Staple is spot on. The two have been muddled for most of us. My Staple understanding, it is when you put on that pair of shoes and you "feel" like a million bucks! Taking a break out from behind the computer, venturing into nature, the organic world, helps to open ones eyes & appreciate the ever-changing world, feeling grateful for the differences, and embracing your own individuality with the appreciation of self. Our "Mold" is organic and that is a good thing! Thank you Alyssa, for giving life to fashion and hopefully opening the eye to your subscribers for a more joyful, style journey experience.

Thank you so much for your videos I live in Minnesota with a climate much like Canada. Because of our 4 different seasons (which I love) we have to have everything from heavy coats and sweaters to tank tops and shorts with everything in between. It seems like I can accumulate so much. Your advice is helping me to pair down (not an easy task) but I'm working on it. Thanks again for the good videos!

It's so true... In autumn/winter I don't wear blue jeans (only black and not so often), blazers or snickers but I wear almost every day midi skirts and dresses, wool turtlenecks or sweaters, black, good quality thights are a must for me and long coats or warm, long jacket for winter. I'm not putting aside my best clothes for special occasion, I wear them every day and it's what makes me happy. Everyone have their own style so we should wear what's best for us ♥️

WELCOME BACK! I have my ticket to your event...I purchased it the moment you announced it...a few months back. I would not miss a single one! Love this video and who has not fallen victim to THE WARDROBE LIST??? I certainly have. Yet, most of those items slowly made their way to consignment shops or were donated to the poor. (the black leather MOTO is still in my closet. I do love it and promise I will wear it on a cool sunny day this Autumn). I purchased it a few years ago and just love the soft leather. This video really focused on an trap that many women have fallen into when they have a career change, weight change, life change and want to revamp their style, image or closet...THE LIST! If I had known at the beginning that these "WARDROBE CLASSICS" that will be handed down to your great grandchildren ended up creating another version of a uniform...that blended in to the crowds. Perhaps, that is what someone wants, but it ended up creating wardrobe boredom that then developed into over-shopping for those items that were more to my liking. UGH. I have also fallen into the "INFLUENCER" trap. I will not mention those influencers, but when I found that within a year they were holding up those MUST HAVE items that we all ran to get...as their "FASHION MISTAKES" it was a real wake-up call for me. I still wore and enjoyed the items that were identified as their "FASHION MISTAKES" and attributed it to their changing style. However, it did give me that "A...HA moment" that awakened me to the BUSINESS of INFLUENCERS. I have unfollowed most all of them. It is your channel (and a couple of others with similar content) that I still follow. YES...to the Basic vs STAPLE videos PART II and PART III. Also, those statement pieces...not just accessories...that really enliven a wardrobe. Perhaps, something in a colorful pattern...but a classic shape. A statement sleeve...or two! A neckline style that is interesting. Those dressmaker details that elevate an outfit...or embroidery.... A leather culotte or a bright color!

Thank you for pointing out the difference between staple and basic. I feel like all these "the wardrobe staples everyone needs" are just a a bunch of basics and classics without any personality. They would never satisfy me. I love my black rollnecks but my wardrobe is truly mine because of all sorts of colorful silk blouses and unique blazers/jackets/cardigans. And the best thing is you can get them in awesome quality for a few dollars 2nd hand :D

So true about the leather jacket! I purchased a few over the years and even though I do have a more edgy, dark style, I still never wore it! I realized I was afraid of wrecking the leather with smoke smells, or spilling on it, and I also just didn’t like the squeak factor! I ended up getting a jacket in a similar shape, but in twill, and I’ve worn that one way more!

Never had a "classic" moto jacket instead opted for a short leather jacket like cardigan/zippered with knitted sleeves/cuffs. Suits me and my life-style. I do fall for the perfect static trap look--frustrated when sleeves don't roll up, jeans don't cuff-grrr... Great reminder! Yes to a part 2 basic/staple. Thank you Alyssa for your thoughtful insights

I am so glad you posted this. Plain White T Shirts are a “Classic” that are just not for me. Luckily they ended up being great dust rags. Expensive dust rags but oh well. Learning that you need basics that fit you and your lifestyle instead of someone else, has needed to be said. Thank you.

Really appreciating that you brought up the classic issue. Not all classics actually fit me/my style. Especially the black cardigan which has always looked out of place on me and brings on hardcore granny vibes 😉 Structured pices like blazers work so much better. I have spend much money trying to find a cardigan that looked good on me. Last year I gave up and donated the last two that had been in my wardrobe. Don’t miss them and feeling freer

And from other videos: what can we learn from styles that work(I gravitate both british whimsy/street and Italian sexy/elegant depending on mood, live in Sweden so cold weather and comfortable/ good looking shoes are important. I was just think about some of these ideas. I feel that black is so classic and black pieces can look so amazing on so many people. But when I wear black on top, I always feel pale and sickly. I feel so much better wearing lighter ‘basics’ even though, they may not be on a list of timeless pieces.

Loved this content. Clarifies spending money on clothes that don’t suit my lifestyle or my body. Reconsidering my collection of dresses for tango dancing which I haven’t been able to wear for a year and a half bc of COVID shutdowns. Also I want everything to be super comfortable and I’ve gained a few pounds and certain shorts and pants aren’t comfortable. As a petite woman the high rise pant and shorts which is becoming so popular is super uncomfortable when I sit so they’re leaving my closet or have left already. Please do a part two to this video. I ordered a black faux leather moto jacket during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale because influencers were saying you need a moto jacket it’s a classic. When I tried it on I realized, it’s not me. I am not comfortable in it and I don’t live in a climate where I would get the number of wears out of it to warrant the purchase, so I sent it back. Thank goodness Nordstrom has a great return policy. This has taught me that I don’t live in the same climate as a lot of influencers I follow, I don’t have the same life style and that I must take this all into consideration when evaluating their recommendations. Lesson learned.
