Thank you Alyssa, you always give me food for thought. I am retired now and come from a Corporate background. I have a lot of difficulty coming to terms with my more casual lifestyle. I am able to incorporate my old work blazers into more casual outfits, but have difficulty styling some of my tops and skirts yet I still gravitate towards those items even though I’m not actually wearing them.

I’m having the best style period now at 47 years old. I am so happy the 90s trends are back. I suppose I have always clung to them, and never stopped wearing them. Now that it is back, i feel “trendy” but with better styling experience and better quality items…

I enjoyed this video. The issue for me is that my body has changed (not running as much, turned 70) so I don't feel comfortable wearing what I used to be able to wear and and am very (extremely?) frustrated, needing to how to look nice but not 'old' or dowdy. I am classic and athletic and will have to do some serious soul searching to find what suits me now. Thank you for your continued guidance.

Hi Alyssa! I usually don't comment, but when I saw your heart earrings, I got very excited. My mother-in-law bought me handmade hammered heart stud earrings back in the early 90s and I have kept them all these years and don't wear them often. I always felt that they were no longer in style for so long. But seeing you with something similar on, I am inspired to shop my jewelry box and bring them back out! Thank you so much for for that!!

Thank you for another brilliant video. I spent the past days in Paris and of course I was tempted to get something new for the autumn. Somehow I kept thinking of your advise, asking myself, what are the elements of style in the "new look" and what do I have in my own wardrobe that I can use in order to create similar vibes. I even left one of my favourite shops, Sézane, empty-handed 😅

Realistic honesty regarding clothing and how most Americans over consume. My mom taught me years ago about the importance of classic clothing. It really is worth spending a little extra on key pieces that look great for a lifetime. If it's classic, fits well and a complimentary color for your skin tone: buy it. Consignment shops, thrift stores and even yard sales: you can find designer pieces. I've learned patience as well. Anything ( too trendy ) will usually look like your trying too hard and a waste of money in the long run. P.S. You; have everything you need. A home, beautiful garden and a sweet Siamese cat. ( blessings for sure ). ✳️🍃🌻🌼💮😽💮🌼🌻🍃✳️

Handy tip: if you put something into your cart online and wait for a few days, many (most?) websites will send you an email discount to try to get you to buy. If you have definitely decided to purchase something, it’s a handy way to get it for less.

I do pay attention to trends because they trickle down to where I shop eventually. By then I have seen enough fashionistas styling them that I know what I want to try and what would work for my lifestyle (retired). From time to time I take out a section of my wardrobe to try everything on. Be it tops, bottoms, jeans, dresses, or shoes. I often rediscover pieces I forgot or can fit back in (from weight loss). It’s good fun and motivation to return new purchases (found similar items already in closet).

Love these ideas, I’ve never followed trends but really liked what you said about appreciating them and then moving on. I will often decide on what I’m wearing while walking my dogs, it gives me time to look at my day and figure out how I feel with what is going on.

Thank you for this refreshing and sage advice! You are an inspiration in this age of social media saturation. Another thing I have done to avoid getting lured into buying more is to stop all emails from my favorite shops; yes, I love certain quality brands, but without the weekly teasers, it's a "rest for my brain" as you say. And that's a lot of it - your brain gets overloaded with decisions and that's often the time when we make those impulse purchases. I have invested in some beautiful classics, which suit me just fine: again, thanks to you for introducing me to particular brands for shirts and belts. This weekend, I'm doing what you suggested to organize my closet and get my fall wardrobe ready, always a nice time to donate or take things for consignment. Good timing for your video, too, as we are hitting the 'back to school' time! Cheers and gratitude from Victoria, B.C.

I had a sweater that lasted over 10 years and no pilling. The secret was the addition of silk to the blend. Hard to find now, but if you ever do see a silk blend knit, snatch it up! I think it was cotton/silk. Not expensive at the time.

If the current trends (cut, silhouette, color, fabric) suit me & are "my style" I pick things up. When the trends don't suit me, I sit them out.

Great video! There's a lot of common sense in what you said. One thing that I've been doing and I found very helpful is to keep a record of every piece that I bought during a year or more. I come back to the list from time and I write things like "I only wore this once" "not good quality" "I loved this, I've worn it a lot" I also write a wish list for the following months or seasons and then revisit it and check if I still want those things It helps me identify my own patterns and keep track of how much money I spend on clothes as well. It takes time and patience but I think it's worth it.

thank you just what I needed to hear as I impulse shop too much and am constantly weeding out clothing I don’t really wear. I’m on a no spend goal as I have far too much everything! Clothing, shoes, coats, handbags, and jewelry! The simple questions to ask myself you suggested, (What do I FEEL good wearing? What is my daily lifestyle ? Do I like the outfit or the person wearing it? ) are very helpful, to make me stop ✋ before purchasing. So much I own needs to go, as taking up space, and not being worn. What is this obsession of “ I may want to wear it someday” as another year goes by not ever thinking to wear the items? Especially accessories! I have far too many pieces ( worked in office for many years so I did dress up, but no longer do) of jewelry! And yet every time I go through it with plans to give away, donate very little leaves 🙄. I truly want to lighten my load. Make room in my closet and keep the accessories I really really do enjoy wearing.

My current strategy, which hasn’t stopped me from buying but has definitely stopped me from buying things I don’t wear, is to methodically wear everything. That sounds like a silly sentence, but in practical terms, it’s been a real game changer. I have my current season, current size wardrobe on my “wear now “ rack, separated from the rest of my collection. As i wear an outfit, I put it away on another rack. I have to wear only what is in the primary rack until I’ve completed that category. For example, I have 13 bottoms in my current rotation. After 13 outfits, I pulled the bottoms off the worn rack and put them back on the top-be-worn rack, and continued wearing the rest of my tops. For my shoes, when I got to the last 3 pairs, I realized I hated them and put them into a quarantine bag. This method, combined with my perfect palette (that took some time!) and finally nailing my keywords, has really changed my buying behavior and increased my satisfaction with my wardrobe and style exponentially! But it takes time and shopping and mistakes to get there.
