Occasionally my producer sends me the latest pop smash HIT, to see what my reaction to it might be. Today it's Meghan Trainor's latest single "Mother".I feel like I hate this...but part of my brain can't stop enjoying how catchy it is, but we shall put this down to it sampling another famous song. However, what is this song even about? I don't understand?

its always good to remember the people who leave youtube comments (such as myself) are pretty low people: were always depressed, never happy, and often struggle with our own sense of personal agency..... so, like, when we hear some negativity, we go, "oh as if my life isnt shitty enough...now i have to think about that negtive thing i just heard/experienced from [politician.....famous celebrity....ect.] " and we think this stupid comment section means anything in the way of "retorting power" which it dont. love the show. youre cool, dude.

Oh please do a podcast on mansplaining! And PLEASE can I be a guest from the “good lil lady”prospective. I’m not in the music industry, but have worked nearly 20 years as an engineer in a male dominated industry. (Depending on how long it is I may have to jump off in order to feed my man, do the dishes, clean the house, make life decisions for the family, mow the lawn, do my taxes, make home improvements, or any other task I’m capable of doing, so I can get at least 3 hours of sleep before I have to work as a project engineer) Not trying to womansplain, but it would really great to help men understand that we, as women in 2023, got this!

I must admit, I would have died clueless if I hadn’t seen the interview. She is a very likeable person, is what my impression is. And all the polish and pop and glamour is applied in excess intentionally. She doesn’t buy into the image herself. Perhaps something to consider. i can womansplain (or possibly gaysplain) this! the term mother has been used within the queer community for a long time, typically referring to a drag mother/elder. recently though a lot of queer people have been calling female celebrities mother, especially when said celebrities are looking good and just generally doing well. meghan trainor has been getting called this recently because she’s releasing music again, so she probably made this song to cash in on the trend and also because she’s an actual mum. i’m happy to clarify any other questions!
@RuailleBuaille
@RuailleBuaille Жыл бұрын
I genuinely don't get the whole trend of calling people "mother" or "daddy". It's so bizarre. In the context of drag mother I can understand - someone who has mentored and helped guide you as you grow in your drag(hood? dom?IDK what term to use there lmao). It just seems like a weird way to either sexualise and fetishise people based on words that are supposed to be reserved for nurturing, supportive and (generally) developmental/child-centric roles - or sometimes just a way to say someone is laudable for their achievements/appearance. I don't know. It just seems so weird and kind of gross. (ETA): Which was a complete tangent that had nothing to do with your actual comment, sorry! I meant to reply just to say thanks for explaining what was meant here - I was completely lost.

Not so sure it's creatively bankrupt. I mean, trying to write something that takes off on social media and Tik Tok could be a creative endeavor in and of itself. So trying to do that alongside another message she's trying to get across could be fulfilling for her. Another comment said she's been getting traction in the drag community, and that drag mother could be the framing of the "I'm your mother" lyrics. In which case, this seems like it's a fun bit of fan service songwriting. Which, while not targeted at me, honestly I can respect the angle she's taking. More of a "for fun for a subset of my fans" song that in the past would probably be a B-side. But in today's world everything is a single for Spotify :P

I pulled up the lyrics and am trying to diagram this clearly very tense matrix of relationships! So if you start mid-song, she HAS a man/boyfriend who treats her well and is an example. OK. Then all around that part, she's bagging on some real or theoretical dude (or the audience?) for being a sexist jerk. Alright. Got it. In the US, one of the many many raging battles is between hetero men and women. Toxic masculinity, old paradigms, etc., have women saying they're not gonna be with a guy and be their "mother." As in taking care of everything for them. But... she's not in a relationship with the guy she's claiming to be the mother of, so... Plus Kris Kardashian. I'm not even touching Norman Bates -- that was a terrible interpretation. Like she's seen Psycho! This is actually EXACTLY the way in which AI is bad. She probably wrote this , but AI writes the same way. It has all the right words for the word salad, but there's no context and the references are fucked and next thing you know the salad is strewn all over the front lawn. In summary, DEMERITS to Megan Trainor for taking a baseball bat to "Mr. Sandman." Did she have to? Really have to?

Hey Justin gen z guy here, being 'mother' is kinda like saying she's being a boss/slaying, or being a queen, which is just a way of saying that she's a nice/cool person doing nice/cool things. But yes it can also be used in the same way 'daddy' is used (I hate that too lol). Sorry if that's confusing but I didn't know how else to explain it

This trend of sampling great song for cheap pop production lately has gone a bit far, have we done everything possible so we just recycle everything? Eco conscious but also a little boring IMHO. Thanks for the video!

Mother is a slag term adopted from the queer community. It comes from the drag/ballroom scene where 'mothers' are elder, more established drag queens. In the context of drag, a mother would be the queen who took you under her wing and taught you a lot of what you know. Recently, as the phrase has evolved outside of the queer community, it's come to mean a person/thing (often a woman) that commands respect

Mother, adult female parent. That is the root, the trans movement can try to appropriate it, as with other terms solely for female use. But it retains the original meaning first and foremost.

I'm pretty sure Megan is using the much older version of mother here despite the intro quote. It feels very much like she's appropriating the aesthetic of drag culture a little without understanding the meaning, as shown by the misuse of the term in the beginning
@trippybrvins

Hi, Linda. I was explaining what the word 'mother' means in the context of this song, since the question was asked multiple times throughout the video. Meghan is not referring to an adult female parent in these lyrics. Since language constantly changes and evolves, understanding slang and colloquialisms is actually just as important as root definitions if we want to communicate effectively and understand pop culture. I made no mention of the trans community so unsure why you brought that up but I hope that explains the confusion :)

If you forget the lyrics for a moment, the production and arrangement are brilliant. Thanks and keep up the good work 😊 PS, i also love Rush, Black Sabbath, Zappa, Cardiacs, Yes, Pink Floyd, Talk Talk, Jeff Buckley and several hundred other artists.

I don't mind things that slag off men either, cause generally I too, don't see the particular criticisms as applying to me personally. In fact we should all deride the men that act like douchebags since their taint makes us all look bad. I think the men who get upset by such things are probably the ones she's actually speaking to though. As for the song quality, it's a bit of fun, not something I would listen to again, but fun. The thing about funny songs is, it is a bit like stand-up. How many times can you hear the same joke and it still be funny? I love a lot of comedians but I don't think I'd watch the same HBO special multiple times, it is pretty much once and done. Songs need to be something you want to hear over and over, so this is good, but I think it will probably fade as fast from our minds as say Afroman's Because I Got High, or anything by Weird Al.
