When I got married, our pastor actually warned us not to joke around with the "objection" part of the wedding, because if anyone actually objected, he was legally obligated to stop the proceedings and ensure that the bride and groom receive proper private counselling to ensure that all parties are indeed in agreement that the wedding should proceed (even if the objector immediately claimed it was a prank)

Why? It's not like he knew it would stop the _entire_ wedding, he probably thought it would just be a momentary "haha gotcha" that they could fondly look back on. It's not as if he stood up and mocked her or made a fool of her in particular, he just made a really, really stupid misjudgement. It's reasonable to be really angry about it, but if you _completely_ lose all respect for your partner over that, you didn't have a good relationship in the first place.

@@GoddoDoggo I think it’s about knowing when is the right time to “joke”. For a lot of people, weddings are sacred and a big deal. Even if it didn’t stop the wedding, the joke would personally make me cry and stress me since it’s such a high pressure moment. They can joke after all they want during the afterparty etc but DURING it. I may not lose all respect but it definitely is something that sounds better in THEORY not PRACTICE.

i feel like a miscommunication or error in judgement like this really does kind of indicate that they might be a sort of shitty match. of ALL days, your wedding is a pretty fucked up one to totally misread your future spouses like... vibe lmao. always felt the same about the smashing the wedding cake into partners face thing where you can tell only one party (doing the smashing of course) thought it was fun. i always joked that if the person i was marrying smashed the cake into my face it would genuinely be cause for me leaving them bc they just fundamentally dont get what im about lol. dramatic maybe but i think actions like that go a long way and this whole wedding prank thing just made me cringe all the way through because i totally sympathise with the wife. i dont know what shes on about with the wedding being unable to go on though, theres no way thats real right? like i totally understand being upset and angry that the groom planned it and personally choosing not to go through with the rest of the day, but as cristine points out, how can that actually be enforced?

As someone who is engaged, if my partner and his friend decided to make a joke that would even potentially throw a wrench in the plans which I've invested hours of my time, emotional labor, and thousands of dollars, I would have 1000% reacted the same. Aside from the fact that we couldn't afford to take a financial blow like that, them knowing how much this day and event means to me and how hard I've worked toward everything that has gone into it, and then deciding that any sort of "prank" would be appropriate, would make me feel like my partner didn't value my efforts or respect the importance of this moment in our relationship.

I said we could do a vow renewal with anything he wanted to do in that vane... but even in that situation I wouldn’t appreciate an objection, unless I helped plan it, and a ‘no’ would not fly. Maybe the bride and groom have a relationship filled with pranks, but for me personally as I am planning my wedding currently, I would be more hurt that my partner isn't taking the day seriously that he would think a prank is a good idea at all, even if the wedding could go forward. For us, it's a day to promise our love to each other and commit ourselves to each other for the rest of our lives and I don't think pranks belong in the ceremony. I know that Ben & Cristine don’t believe on the whole getting married thing for their own situation, but this case is more about how the bride was not respected rather than how the law/custom seems unfair... So true. She spent a lot of money, time, and emotional investment in this special event, only for her partner to turn it into a joke which he clearly didn't ask her about. Yes the biggest point of a wedding is to celbrate with friends and family. But now she will look back on this day and only think about how her partner disrespected her and and made it into a joke. Cristine says that in her shoes she would look back on it and find it funny. But the point of the post is that this woman clearly doesnt think it's funny and her partner didn't even think to check with her.

I’m not sure that’s entirely fair, especially since I think they are genuinely unaware that in some places a wedding by really can be called of for an objection. Their point was that the legal marriage can still occur later and why not take the opportunity to celebrate the relationship since all their loved ones are present and it’s already a paid for party anyway. Not saying I agree with them since I agree with the bride here and would have had the exact same reaction, but I can see where Ben and Cristina are coming from, and the more level part of of my personality likes to think I would be capable enough to take the situation more practically and not get upset. But that’s a big ask on a wedding day! I’m not sure the “prank” would make me re-evaluate my decision to get married at all, but we don’t know the couple and there may be other unaddressed issues that may contribute to her feeling this way. The disrespect and hurt are legit though even if it was borne out of sheer stupidity, it’s a terribly juvenile and hurtful thing to do to someone.

I don't think that they were trying to hurt her feelings, I expect they didn't know that it would stop the wedding. The bad part of this story is how they treated her AFTER pulling the prank, like she was being ridiculous for feeling pissed. I think that Cristine and Ben had trouble understanding why she was so pissed because they don't really understand the point of the wedding in the first place (which, I mean, same). But it meant something to her, so of course she was pissed that they ruined it. It's totally understandable that she wanted to leave, just like how it would be she felt that way in most other situations.

what really upset me is that bc it all got canceled and it is non-refundable, she is now out thousands of dollars! that is one good ass reason to get upset, even if it didn't ruin the day. and also what I think ben and cristine don't understand (since they personally don't want to get married) is that a lot of people get married to have a big ceremony that is planned out perfectly and the getting married part is def important, but if they just wanted the title then they would have eloped or gone to the courthouse. like yeah they want the title of husband/wife, but they also want to walk down the aisle, have people throw confetti or blow bubbles when they leave, etc. so for her, she is out thousands of dollars AND she doesn't get the ceremony of her dreams. i woulda been heartbroken and pissed that I'm out of so much money

It's not just a religious thing, in some countries it's actually a legal thing that even civil ceremonies can't go on of someone objects, even if they then say that it was a prank. That's because the objection means there are (or might be) reasons why the marriage would not be legal, e.g. bride or groom is underage, they are closely related, one of them is already married and so on. And as this has to be investigated closely the wedding can't take place. It's kinda similar with the 'I do' part, if someone jokingly says he/she doesn't want to mary the partner the wedding will be stopped because it's a requirement for a legal wedding that both partners understand what they are doing and are able to grasp what the impacts on their life are and also that both partners actually agree to mary. Someone who can't simply say 'I do' is considered to either mentally not be stable and mature enough for marriage or to not actually be sure if he/she wants that marriage.

In the uk, we have gotten rid or the objections at the wedding because of this. The city hall posts a notification of the wedding before for any objections. This is because any objections have to be investigated as it’s “any lawful reason why these two should not we’d”. So it is a legal matter that needs to be investigated. The investigation period can take up to 4 weeks, so by the time the wedding comes around the objection period has already passed so no one can object.

On objections at weddings. In the UK at least yes this is a thing because it is a legally binding ceremony. Whether it's in a church or a registry office there are certain things that have to be said and responded to in a particular way or the marriage is not legally valid, that's why they do the 'repeat after me' bit. If someone objects then the wedding cannot go ahead until the objection is properly investigated. What they did was absolutely awful and she is 100% right to be furious. This is giving me palpitations just thinking about! All that money and time and energy down the drain and the wedding totally ruined! I would never speak to them again and definitely wouldn't marry them after that. In fact objecting as a joke in the UK carries a very hefty fine and potential jail time. The reception venue might not have had to be cancelled, it depends on if it was a separate venue than for the ceremony. But would you really feel up to celebrating your wedding that didn't actually go ahead with the people who ruined it? And now you're going to have to wait another notice period and get another marriage license which costs even more money and potentially not have any of your family there to see you legally married if they can't make it out again? Just awful.
@fuzzybeatle
@fuzzybeatle 3 жыл бұрын
Wow I can’t believe that is how it happens there! Here in the US the marriage certificate is the legal part and that isn’t done at the wedding. The wedding itself isn’t anything legally binding. I’m shocked to hear that objecting is a real thing I only ever saw it in movies.
@novarage1923
@novarage1923 3 жыл бұрын
@@fuzzybeatle this is state specific tho. In NY you have to get your marriage certificate before the wedding as it takes a few days to get issued. Then it's only valid for a set time. It then has to be signed by you, your spouse, a witness for each, and certified by the person that performed the ceremony (be it priest, pastor, justice of the peace). And that part (the execution) has to be done and submitted within a specific time frame from the date performed. It's a legal issue.

@@novarage1923 its the same in Canada as well. It differs from Province to Province. For instance in Ontario the officiant needs to legally ask if anyone objects but in Quebec they don't. In Quebec you post the bonds (intention to marry) a month before the ceremony so that people have time to object and any research would need to be done. Thats why they don't have to ask if anyone objects in that province.

The bride one breaks my heart. For me the religious part of the ceremony is the most important part. It's a reason to bring family together, but if that's all I wanted I would have arranged a family reunion. Also a court house wedding doesn't supplement a marriage in a church. To work hard, use your own money, and to dream about that day only to have someone make a joke out of it? I wouldn't have wanted to continue on with the rest of the plans either, because they negated the reason for the day. I'm assuming that if their ceremony takes the objections seriously then it is on the more religious side. I think she is 100% justified in her feelings. The groom's actions show a disregard for his partner's feelings. I wouldn't want to marry someone who did that to me. Very sad.

The question about the airline and the mom asking to sit next to her daughter on a flight made me flashback to when I had to travel across the country when my mom unexpectedly died. This mom's son was sitting in the middle and I was in the aisle and she was sitting in the middle in the next set of seats. She wanted me to switch with her and when I said no she started yelling at me. I kept saying no because she didn't need to know I was traveling on bereavement and spent nearly a grand to travel across the country and didn't have long windows of time between flights. It then turned out they were in the wrong row and wrong side of the plane after they talked to a flight attendant about trying to make me move. The people on the other side of the aisle gave me such dirty looks and calling me selfish/a bitch until I started sobbing and said my mom had just died the day before and I had had no sleep, and was dealing with other issues due to her death. I didn't owe them ANY explanation for why I wouldn't give up my seat and people are assholes just because they can be. For the question at 34mins, my partner and I have gone through the same thing. He gets up early for work, had multiple alarms, im a light sleeper, it would wake me up ect. Our solutions were we compromised on an alarm sound, and once it went off, he gathered his things and then continued to 'sleep in a bit' on the couch or futon in another room. Our furniture is super comfy so this isn't a problem. Now he barely wakes me, i get my sleep, and he gets his extra sleep in time without me hearing multiple alarms.

For the morning routine couple: these people should really consider getting a smartwatch. You can set it so that it vibrates on your wrist when you get a message or phone call, or when an alarm goes off. The phone can remain silent. The vibrations on your skin are definitely enough to wake you up, but they are not loud, so they don't wake anyone but the wearer. If the watch bothers you on your wrist (for example if you sleep with your hand under your head), you can put it on your ankle instead. This has the added bonus that to turn off the alarm you have to reach down to your feet, and the movement helps wake you up. I use a smartwatch as an alarm clock because I like to sleep with earplugs, especially when I need a very restful night.

A similar seat thing happened with me while travelling in Europe. I purposely paid to choose an aisle seat. I dislike the middle and I did not want the window seat. I have anxiety so aisle seats are easy access to get out if I need to stand or use the washroom...etc. Once I was sitting on the plane, a girl that was in the row in front of me asked to sit next to her parents (I was sitting next to them), there was a language barrier, but I speak a bit of Italian so I tried my best. I asked her if her seat was specifically the aisle seat by pointing to it and she said yes. So I said ok sure. After 5 minutes a couple comes and says I'm sitting in their seat and I ended up having to sit in at the window seat. I was LIVID...I literally PAID to be able to choose my seat and I ended up with something I didn't want. You best believe I will not be nice next time and will politely decline and if someone wants to call me an asshole because of it, they can kiss my ass lol Also, it's actually not right to be changing seats due to the manifest having your name for a specific seat in the event that the plane crashes.

I recently started teaching and it's been so weird to tell 8 years old Eino and Veikko to be quiet and sit down. Those names are becoming more popular now when my generation has started to have kids. I was born in the mid 90's and my generation has a lot of pretty neutral names like Anna, Maria, Sami, Joona etc (my name is also from that category, a variation of Anna). In the 2000's came the international and rich people names like Stella, Tony, Daniel and Jessica. Now we have a bunch of 20+ year old Annas and Jessicas starting to name their kids after grandma Maija or grandpa Viljami.

As a tall person, I have fully accepted my role in helping people shorter than me reach things that they cannot get to, It is a burden to bear but I bear it gladly 😌

I asked my dad (a pastor) about having someone object to a wedding, and he said he's never had to deal with that, but historically it was a thing so that if anyone in the crowd knew of something that would hinder the marriage (ex - the groom was actually married and leading the bride on), they were given that opportunity to speak out and inform the couple/those gathered before something bad occurred.

The reason Juan Pablo was chosen to be the Bachelor was because when he was on Desiree's season of the Bachelorette and got very little air time since he was sent home early on. With the little time he was on the show Bachelor nation fell in love with him since he genuinely seemed like a nice, single dad who also happened to be a hot, latin soccer player.

The alarm story hit home for me. My sister could never wake up, even when her cellphone screamed at her, so I always woke up from her loud alarms, walked over, waked her up and walked back to bed. I could have easily slept 2 hours more and that always made me mad!

Yeah! Like could you just WAKE UP PLZ 😂 I (kinda) understand the habit, just wished they'd recognize how ANNOYING it is for light sleepers lol

I'm a 5'8" woman, and I've had several occasions when shorter folks have asked me to get something from a top shelf, and I usually just do it cuz why not LOL. I have said the typical " I don't work here" but when I realize simply to reach for something I just laugh and hand it over. Kind gestures can bring you happiness!! Maybe it's a Canadian thing

I do it in the US. For the stuff in the back of the top shelf, I can't reach that and have asked other people. They have no issue with it. The key that shows he is the ass is he said "a step ladder costs $20".

I'm Dutch, we are not known for our politeness. I wouldn't think twice about getting something off a shelf for someone shorter then me.

I don't understand this helper mentality you people have. Her wellbeing doesn't benefit me, she could be getting kidnapped in the middle of the street and I still woudnt lift an finger to help. Why would i waste my energy on something so useless?

I can totally relate to the toothbrush story. When I was little my mum cleaned the Floor and after the Toilet with it and put it back in my brushholder. Maybe because I was little I didnt pay attention to the toothbrush but it had.. fuzzys in it. But I used it anyway and had some of those fuzzys in my mouth and screamed for my mum. She realized what she had done and apologized multiple times. 15 years later and I still make jokes about it (and ofc my mum covers her face in shame when I tell the story) :)

Not gonna lie I sometimes just climb the shelves (assuming they seem stable enough.) If a grocery store isn’t going to accomodate for such a common problem then I’m gonna do what I have to do to live my life.

My husband is 6 foot 6 inches. He rarely is asked to reach things for others in stores. When he is asked, he happily grabs what the person needs. More energy is needed to fight about it.

At our wedding rehearsal my brother jokingly objected, and the priest had to explain to him that he must absolutely get all of that out of his system before the actual ceremony, because if he did that, even jokingly, the ceremony would have to be stopped and the objection would have to be fully investigated. As I think someone else mentioned, the objections have to be taken very seriously here (in the UK) though I'm not sure how it is in other places.

As a tall person who hates being tall, it does suck constantly getting comments about my height. It is a bit of a trigger for me. If somebody came up to me at Walmart and said “hey tall guy, can you help me,” I would help them while being a little annoyed.

I experienced the complete opposite of the first story, I'm not really short, I'm 174 cm tall and I wanted to get bottles of soda and they were on the highest part of the shelf. I got a few, but at some point I just couldn't reach it anymore, not even when I jumped xD I didn't ask, but a very nice man offered to help me and got me the other bottles :D
