"I just got back into rolling skating now at age 33. I used to do it back when I was a child at either family events or field trips and surprisingly, I was pretty good! 👍 I also dabbled in skateboarding for atleast 7 yrs of my life as a teen. Last year I was invited to a skating rink b-day party for one of my wife's nieces. I honestly did NOT want to go. Fearing that I'd see someone I know there and they'd think I was corny for participating ect and I hadn't done it in soooo long as well. I've gotten older, I've been working lots, Im a cancer survivor, I was battling a drug addiction. I've honestly just been through alot and I've never had a outlet. Until that night at the party after having my wife beg me to go... Let me tell you 😂 I showed OUT!! Surprising my family and myself. I finally felt good and FREE to express myself and knew that roller skating was something I desperately needed to be a part of. It was also a good way for me to release the stresses of my life and challenge myself physically and mentally. Just bought 2 pair of HIGH-END skates with much extensive research, 1 for rhythm skating and one for speed skating. I'm already beginning to meet new friends and people at the local rink!!!! Skating was calling me.. Now I do it almost everyday with the tip money I make from my Job. I'd say get out there and do it!! Don't let your "limitations" and the bad things life throws at you to hold you back." THANK YOU FOR THIS VID!

Amazing video. I didn't want to watch at first because I thought it would be simply "no, you're not too fat! You're beautiful! Feel yourself!" And by saying that, I don't mean to belittle those kinds of messages. It's just that, that seems to be all anyone ever has to say about insecurities. But my goodness, the message you delivered in this video was thoughtful, thought provoking, philosophical, and so so so inspirational. What you said about insecurities that very well could be legitimate? Thank you!! Yes, it is not shameful to have insecurities, yes they may be spot on, and yes, I absolutely agree that they should not stop you. Personally, my insecurity does revolve around my looks. I'm not conventionally pretty, and in fact I was often mistaken for a boy during middle and high school. It's not low self esteem, it's simply a fact that I am not pretty. But, not being pretty doesn't stop me from having bomb style, and you know that when I go skating I put together outfits that are weird and funky but make me feel beautiful. And sometimes, I think I actually do look conventionally pretty. When I go skating in a cute ass outfit, I feel free, and I feel a calming effect from the sound of wheels carving, and the way we can so elegantly make our body move with the slightest of weight shift. I feel in tune with myself and how my body works when I'm skating, and it is absolutely therapeutic. Asphalt roads suddenly seem rubbery under your skates, not a foreboding surface threatening to scrape up your skin, but a comrade in your journey, bending and swaying with you to bring you where you want to go and how you want to get there. That may sound a bit weird, but this is the mindspace your video has put me in, and I really really want to thank you for that. Thank you for your thoughts, they were insightful.

First off .... you are an incredible writer and I can only imagine you moving through the world in your own style. Isn't it amazing that your insecurity has a positive effect in other parts of your life? I feel like it has made you a bit fearless! I want to see your outfits now :) Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Thank you for also acknowledging that insecurities are legit. I almost didn't want to say that because it can be thought of as controversial. Insecurities are NOT shameful. They are real and can be overcome.

I'm 50 years old, and started skating again last summer ( having not skated since I was 9 years old). I have been watching your channel and your videos have helped me. I had all those "I'm too___..." but I didn't let the fact that I was old, fat, weak, bad knees, etc stop me. My only regret is that I've not been skating all along. I'm the introvert skater. It's just me and my music and, right now....a big empty parking lot. 💕

Started again at 55 and it is hard to accept that I’m a novice because I was so good at skating when I last skated, when I was about 20! I was a super confident street skater and now I skate in a car park and I don’t skate from home to the car park like I would have done then. Getting older sucks but I’m so proud that I fell four times this week and just got up and carried on. My worst injury so far is a sprained little finger where I bent it back when I fell. It’s good to know my bones are strong (hrt?) and that I bounce. That makes me feel young again. As Debbie the wise one has repeatedly said, it is more than just skating, it gets in your blood.

I love this no bull motivational video. Before I started I thought, no one in this entire country seems to roller skate, I've never come across a skater in my lifetime here other than children, I don't have the money for the Cool roller skates I see girls on Instagram have, I am clumsy and weak I won't be able to do hand stands in my roller skates and whatever other crazy stuff I see on the internet... hell i cant even take classes cause theres no one here teaching skating, I will waste money on roller skates that won't be of quality and will be difficult to learn on and then have zero guidance and accomplish nothing. Is there point in even starting? That was a terrible way to start myself off. I spent 50 euro on my first skates. I just couldn't resist the urge. I put them on once for ten minutes and felt unsteady, and felt watched in public and took them off and didn't put them on for another three months. I started practicing on an empty car park with not even a single Google of instructions and it took forever to learn to roll forwards. Another two months passed and I felt like I had my roller skates for nearly half a year and still didn't learn how to effectively turn, stop, go backwards, approach a step or drop. Anything. I felt useless because I'd see girls on Instagram post their moxi daily skate challeges and how it took them three months from no skills to tricks at the park. But it was too fun to stop. I felt good when I did it, then terrible when I saw others do it better online, but then great again when I put my own skates on even if I failed at learning a new skill. I'll say this, the internet is a terrible place about 70% of the time for creating insecurity and jealousy, but it's also what got me skating and helped me find these lessons. My biggest take away point from my skate journey is don't let other peoples journeys affect your own skate journey. I still can't skate compared to some but can skate compared to my past self. I'm still weak and clumsy compared to some but not compared to me last year. I'm constantly improving at my own pace and when I focus on it, I enjoy myself and motivate myself to do more. Meanwhile Instagram is making me feel like roller skating needs to be done in nice clothes and only if you're pretty and only if you were previously a dancer or a gymnast or a figure skater. Do what you want and how you want it. I'm still learning from my own advice.

All skates will let you switch out the wheels. As for brands, I always have to recommend Riedell and Sure-Grip. They’re 2 of the original giants in roller skating, and they put out a quality product at various price points, so everyone can always afford them. The Sure-Grip Malibu is $99. The Riedell OGs are 699 (I believe). There really is something for everyone. A bonus is you can always find some somewhere. It helps if you check their websites first. I’ve found lots still in stock by checking their websites.

Used to rollerblade as a kid and I still occasionally ice skate, but I always loved the look of cruising around and dancing on quads. I put it off because I'm a massage therapist and I'm scared I'm going to put myself out of work by injuring my wrists. Finding your channel gave me the confidence to go for it anyway. There's no sense in depriving myself of something I truly enjoy, that challenges me and makes me a healthier person, for fear of the POSSIBILITY of injury. I feel silly for having let that hold me back for so long. Thank you for putting out this content, and especially for your lovely words on this topic. You are such a gem!

Thank you! It's funny you mention riding a motorcycle and swimming. Those are my 2 favorite things. I've since stopped riding but I have always wanted to skate. I always put it off due to my weight. I would say once I lose weight I'll try it. I ordered some skates and a few months later I finally gave it a go. I was nervous at first, felt weak but found warming up and skating in front of people actually gave me more confidence. I started with 5 mins max, I'm going onto an hour. It's welcoming people like you that encourage me to keep going. It really is a life changer. I look forward to growing as a skater and watching what my body could do. Thank you 🙏🙏

most start around the $100 mark. id avoid the $40 skates you find on amazon or at walmart, theyre toys. the wheels are plastic, the truck cushions are plastic, the bearings barely work, etc. theres no shame in buying used if price is an issue. if anything, the used pair is already broken in. :) whatever you do get down the road, just make sure to look up reviews of them first. the problem might not even be your skates, it could just be the wheels or trucks, they could be too tight. what skates do you have?

i’ve had social anxiety issues for a long time. i was pulled out of school right before quarantine started. i quit every single extracurricular activity i was doing. everything i loved, because i had no motivation to continue and i was so scared of people that i couldn’t build a skill around them, because building a skill involves trial and error and my anxiety tells me that every time someone sees me fail they automatically think i’m pathetic, as if they haven’t failed at things in life either. since quarantine, i’ve felt so much better and having time to rejuvenate myself has been so much less stressful than when i was in school. i feel so much better but i cant start any activities again because they’re all still cancelled. beginning to skate again recently has already built my confidence even a little more. i’m so very grateful that i’ve started doing this again because my version of the title throughout the last few years has basically been “am i too [everything] to do [anything]”. and with skating that hasn’t applied and i cannot ever explain how good that feels after being so tired of being so anxious all the time.

Hello my sweet lady. You have no idea how much you inspire people. I am 67 years old and started skating last year. I had a list of why I couldn’t skate. Too old, too weak, knees hurt, back hurts, people will laugh at me...etc. Your videos literally paved the way for me to have the courage to give it a try. As a young girl I did some roller skating but that was well over 50 years ago!! As you said, everyone has to make a personal assessment on realistically what their goals are. At first mine was just being able to NOT FALL!! But once my balance was achieved, I wanted to do MORE! That is where your videos came in to play. I watched them over and over learning something new for me to try. I will have to admit, the edges thing is still a little mystery to me but I’m working on it. Skating makes me feel young again! Skating makes me feel happy. You can’t be depressed while skating! The sound of the wheels gliding over the floor, my hair flowing in the self made breeze, spectators smiling and waving, all of that is free and good for the soul. So I want to encourage everyone to STOP putting yourself in a box if “I can’t “. Lace up some skates and see what freedom feels like!

THANKS for lifting my spirits with talking about something I felt insecure about, too (fear of falling, being overweight, etc)... I can't roller skate as smoothly as you, but... I'm willing to go out and try. And I also just found out that they've actually refurbished the place where we had a halfpipe and made it a small skate park! I'm going to go out there tomorrow and practice my skating. Though I hope I'll be alone, I'm afraid of being made fun of for my bad/insecure skating. It's very funny though, that I'm so insecure on my skates when I used to be quite good with my roller blades (inline skates). However, I actually want to learn how to skate again to help me to lose weight and to have fun :) my goal is to get good enough that can visit one of our skating routes and manage it okay and still have fun :) And I'm certainly introvert! xD

You’ve inspired me to pick up skating again! My 12 year old just started skating and I took her to a group class at our local rink where I saw MANY people my age and older learning to skate (I’m 47!). I haven’t skated since I was my daughter’s age. I’ve had long Covid for 2 years, I’m just now getting into exercise via rowing, I have to take things easy because I’m not in great condition, I’ve got POTs and heart rate issues thanks to long Covid, and my knees aren’t great, AND I’ve put on 30 lbs since getting Covid. I have a fear of hurting myself that I never had because I *feel* old now with all my new issues. But I know I can take things slowly at my own pace and that with consistent effort I’ll learn!! And I have my daughter cheering me on! Thank you so much for this video, it’s EXACTLY what I needed to hear!! ❤️

Do you wear protective gear when you skate? Wearing them works wonders for me, I'd be scared stiff if I didn't have all my pads on when I skate. I started out in roller derby so it's kinda natural for me to wear the gear but I see a lot of beginner skaters on KZbin videos who don't have any pads on. It's much nicer to learn to skate when you have the safety of falling on your pads.

The movement is very mystical, soothing and healing. It is true that a lot can be left on the skating rink because you connect to the divine when you skate and healing happens and answers come. So great to see someone else get emotional when trying to impart wisdom from a place of "true knowing". I feel ya! Thanks for going there Dirty Deborah Harry! This is such a great message! I was a great jam skater as a teen. Stopped for a couple decades. Got back into skating ten years ago. Two years ago I had a BJJ injury: Achilles Tendentious shredded at the heel. Took nine months to fully recover. Meanwhile, put on 50 new pounds. Got back on a skates a few times with the youngest kids. Hit a rock on the rink floor - owner allows people out there in shoes. That sudden fall gave me a second degree tear in my hamstring. More long recovery. I was on skates once before covid shut the world down. So I just bought some outdoor wheels and hit a park trail today. Rougher ride. Shins barked. Going to take some work to get back to myself. For anyone reading this, I'm a 6'2" dude weighing 270 today. I was 220 when that first injury hit. I will get back to it, and no matter what you think is stopping you, you can do this too. I wish you all well! I forgot to mention I'm 43. A living breathing middle aged man on roller skates.

If it wasn’t for you, Aunty Dirty, (yes my son is watching right now), I wouldn’t have picked it up so quickly! I was a roller blader as a kid, took like a 15 year break lol and here I am on skates and loving it. I’ve had my skates for maybe a month (if that) and it’s just the best. I get kind of sort of insecure when people look at me while skating but at the same time I don’t care because.. I don’t really know why I don’t care. I guess I’m just having fun! And being safe also! I don’t wear ‘cute’ outfits for attention, it must be just the fact that it’s rare to see someone (where I live) just casually skating down the street like it’s nothing haha. P.s yes when I was younger I was a motorcyclist and now that you mention it, I got the same feeling! When fuel was a lot cheaper I would just go out riding my motorbike all weekend! That was my idea of fun. Sorry for the long comment. I just take in everything you say you’re amazing and my life would be complete if I could give you a physical hug . 🤗

I say this because my body hurts and feels completely wrecked. I watch so many videos and am seduced by the movement of skates. It is like dance. I lived a very disciplined life athletically and now at almost 52, I'm so beat up. But in spite of that, I bought my first pair of skates. Now, I have to take them out of the box and begin....fall and fall again...begin again. You are my inspiration and I adore you. Thank you for reminding us how much alike we are in our fear, our suffering and despite all these things, we deny going for joy, whatever form it takes for us individually. Wish me luck! Dirty, I lost 2 pant sizes in 3 months by skating twice a week for 2 hours. I wasn’t looking to lose weight and I didn’t, I gained more muscle! I also gained some new friends! It’s my shamanic tribal release and I can’t wait to get back on the hardwood!

I used to love roller skate as a child and teen but as I got older married and had kid's,gained weight I just stopped. My kids were scared of falling so they wouldn't try it while at a group function at a local roller town so I swallowed my fears and tried it so they could see me do it and it was like I never stopped..lol..and my family was so surprised! And this year my 16yr old asked for skates for her upcoming 17th birthday after seeing a movie about skating and loving it and she wanted me to skate with her. My fear of being to heavy and old (I turned 40) this year has kept me heming and hawing about it but I think I'm ready to start again after watching this because it made me happy and sharing that love with my daughter would make any small spills (hopefully none..lol..) worth it! I have never watched you before but once I saw you skating it was like kismit since that's all we've been talking about so thank you so much for this!!❤

Awwwww ... you have no idea how happy I am to read this! Do it! When you get skates, just get down as low as you can and "fall". Get up. Repeat 5 times. Get used to the motion of getting down and getting up. When you get up, get used to picking up one foot and balancing. Shift your weight from side to side. Once you have warmed up a bit, those old skills will come back. What an incredible skill you will be able to share with your teenager and create memories for a lifetime!

I needed this. I use to skate at this rink when i was little and I LOVED it. I also ride motorcycles so the mention of the motion and how it feels is something I do relate to and love. Since the sh** hit the fan I lost my job and I have been wanting something more for myself in terms of a place to put energy. I have gained a considerable amount of weight and that is something I struggle with but I love the message. It shouldn't be what holds me back from this. And it was actually Instagram that knew what was good for me and then youtube lead me to your videos. (Which are very nostalgic because of the rink) Anyway, thank you for the message. I hope to get back to this rink in the future.

I don’t skate that often but my mom did when she was a kid and I’m really wanting to get her back out there cuz I know SHE LOVES IT SO MUCH . When you started tearing up I really felt that ✨💜💜

I see this post is over a year old, but I sure was glad to find it! I wanted my own skates desperately when I was a kid, but never got them. I was taken to our local rink a handful of times back then and loved it. Now I’m 48 and doing some “research” as I’m thinking of trying skating again for the first time since I was probably 8! Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement. You’re so right I can’t “not skate” 😊
