Love this! I'm in zone 7b and I've been very hesitant to try ranunculus, because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to start them in the fall or the spring and figured it wasn't worth the hassle... but you've inspired me to give it a try! My local Home Depot is selling corms now, so I'll pick up a bag this evening. I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turn out!!

I’m in 8b, but Western Washington and always start in the spring. They rarely come back if I plant them in the fall. I definitely think spring is the way to go! Good luck ❤

I’m 8b Olympic Peninsula, I’ve planted in pots in the fall (after presprouting) and have had good luck. They stay in their pots through blooming and dormancy, and then start sprouting on their own in the fall, and stay evergreen over winter. Maybe try that with some of your spring planted corms as a test. I will occasionally sprinkle some water on the pots after they go dormant, we don’t get much rain during summer. The pots stay out in winter and are subjected to rain, wind and temperatures usually in lower to upper 30s, although we’ve had a few nights in the upper 20s.

I have planted some for the first time this year. I’m in southern Alabama. I planted them at the beginning of December. I did cover them when we had that deep freeze around Christmas time but I only have two dozen corms so it wasn’t a major undertaking. They are doing well now. The plants are all about 5-6” tall. I hope to have blooms well before it gets too hot - unless we have another deep freeze I guess.

+Samantha Earnest good to know … I’ve been weary of planting in fall due to the extra care they need … I’m planting 100 this year but they aren’t very spread out … if I fail to have a good amount of blooms this year, I will definitely try them in the fall!

I'm attempting to pre-sprout rannunculus for the first time. 7a Maryland. I did one batch 12 days ago and will do another this week. I was interested that you were keeping them in your house. I've seen different opinions about storing in a cold place or room temperature. I have mine in the garage but may put the next batch in the basement, which is warmer. Love your video.

I bought a bag of ranunculus at Walmart this fall and forgot about them! I found them when I was putting away Xmas decor. I meant to plant them in the fall so I soaked them for a few hours and just stuck them in some empty containers a couple of weeks ago. They all came up and some are already a couple of inches tall! I panicked this morning when I saw we got down to 27 last night here in northeast texas as that was colder than expected but they are all okay!❤🎉

Zone 7B, north Mississippi. I started my ranunculus in the fall and set them out in early November. They were doing great, and then we had 3 nights of 1, 9 and 15, with temps not reaching above freezing for 3 days. I had planted them in several areas of the garden as I am experimenting. I was able to cover them with large overturned plant pots, and probably about 1/2 of them survived. I have a couple I planted years ago that have perennialized in a spot in my garden that gets full winter sun but full summer shade, and it's a little dry there. I never got the corms started last spring so just stuck them in my garage mini-fridge to keep them from drying out. It apparently worked, because I had a tray full of ranunculus sprouts in the fall! I've never ordered the higher quality corms (I just buy the ones in big box stores), but plan to when they go on sale later this spring.

@@shesamadgardener No, they didn't sprout in the refrigerator, but they did almost instantly once I soaked and planted them in a tray and put them in my dark storage room.

Zone 8b Texas. I planted ranunculus in containers mid Nov last year, but before Christmas they all broke the ground. I brought them into a greenhouse, but 2/3 of them died. Not sure how the rest will go in the coming weeks. Seems that 29F is coming in 10 days.

+Helena Wang they can handle to 28 degrees … if your greenhouse was pretty warm that might have zapped them … they prefer cooler weather.

So did I understand you say Longfield Gardens? Can you link a video or pictures of what they looked like last year in your garden during their bloom? I don't know anything about corms and this video was very educational for me. I've bought flowers in bloom that I thought were dead after their bloom, so I am one that through out the corms (hope I'm spelling this right). I'll be looking for your follow ups. Thanks!

Pre-sprouting ranunculus right now! Half of tray has green sprouts already but the other half does not. Should I put the tray under grow lights now and cover the half of the tray that hasn't sprouted yet? Or do you think I should just wait until the entire tray has sprouted?

+Karie 3 I would dig up one of the ones that has not sprouted and check it for roots … and possibly mold. For the ones that have already sprouted, I think you can leave them for a little longer … but if you are worried about it, go ahead and pot the sprouted ones up so they can go under the grow lights.

@She's A Mad Gardener thank you for the reply! I did check that half of the tray and they are not moldy. I will give them another week and see if I have sprouts. I was just worried about the ones that have already sprouted.......I didn't know if they needed grow lights right away or not.

You can start them but just be sure to protect them from freezing temps … that’s the key for starting them in the fall … can’t let them freeze or they will rot.

For 6b it seems attempting to grow Ranunculus is too advanced for me. This is my second attempt with Anemones in the ground, protected with chicken wire/mesh stapled and mulched since early November. Stand by...

I am in zone 6, MI. I preprinted ranuculus at the end of January. I soaked them, stirring once an hour for three hours. I put them in seed starting mix, covered with the soil as well. I put a cover on to eliminate light. Then I totally forgot I had started them. A month in, they were about six inches tall and had to be potted. 100% germination/sprouting. My mistake? The soil when I potted them up was too wet, and I lost some. My foolishness. The ones that are growing are doing well! It's actually very easy to do.

+Brampton Gardener hmm … maybe less soaking time to start off … or put the soaked corms in dry soil rather than moist soil.
