Yes, it's the biggest misconception of American life, that ppl here have so much money but what ever we earn goes mostly for living expense especially if you have student loans or credit card debts. My advice is to live within your means (especially don't buy things to show off to other ppl), have as little of debt as possible while enjoying life safely. Even getting vacation and going to India is more tougher and expensive than middle east, you have to save up your avg 2-1/2 weeks vacay and ask for more, pay more for tickets, pay your bills in advance etc. Ofcourse Its hard to avoid buying things especially when you can get a lot of things here on Credit but you got to start here with financial discipline from the get go.

Lunch - rice , yogurt, achar, 🥥 chamanthi podi and chicken curry . 4 pm snack- mixture , apple , grapes , orange etc. Dinner - rice , yogurt, achar , chicken curry . Few times a week there will be some organizations that have some gathering and we usually go for that since they provided lunch after the meeting 😀. That was the feast for us. We were 6 mallus staying in an apartment. Monthly rent was $50 each , utilities- 50. No car , had a 🚴 to go to university and shopping . Now even I can’t believe how we lived such a low cost lifestyle. 😇😇 .

Hi Shinoth, thanks for the video. The expenses you have mentioned is very genuine. These are fixed costs. There are other significant expenses such as income taxes (20-30% federal, state, medicare, social security), term life insurance then savings such as retirement (401k, IRA, college 529, mutual funds etc). With all these at least 12K per month is required for a decent life in America. But benefits outweigh the expenses such as security of women and children, education, medicare, freedom in all things, corruption free life, good environment, opportunity to do businesses without bribery etc and these should be among several reasons which attracts many immigrants.

Dear Mr. Jacob: A New Yorker paid more than 50% of his/her income as tax depending on income. IRA, 401K, 529 and Insurance are not mandatory. SSI is a retirement money that will get back when retire. Along with taxes, there are lot of benefits too including free schooling for children up to high school, school transportation, garbage collection and others. First try to live happy and save later. America pays very well and they know how to take it back (indirectly) by giving modern life. If any body loose employment, we have unemployment insurance for six months. Besides we have aids from govt. in the way of EBT card with which we can buy food from super market without paying. Even though Keralaites seldom go for EBT card or unemployment, it is available. The dignity of work is very important. No body goes to bed hungry or die without getting proper medical care whether rich or poor, any other propaganda is absolutely false. Thanks.

An excellent presentation as always.Both husband & wife have to work very hard to maintain a decent standard of living in US.Moreover you can lose your job at any time there.Though the administrative set up there is much better than in India,there are wasteful expenditures on govt's part as in India which results in continuous inflation which EATS AWAY whatever savings one accumulates with great difficulty.

Average house price in the US is way more than other places in Europe. For example NY average price is around 6.5 lakh USD. In places like Houston, it is only 2.5 Lakh USD. In the UK and around Europe, in most tier 2 cities, the prices are like Houston only. Your salary will easily cover it as long as you get a decent job. So it is not not as bad as it is made out to be in this video. Also in Europe the interest rate for home loans is 1 to 2 % only so your mortgage is very similar or slightly higher than the rent you pay. If your job is decent it is quite alright.

You need to get yourself updated. The interest rate in Europe and UK is not 1 or 2%. A house generally comes with minimum 2 bed room.Of course , you may be able to buy a house for 2.5 lakh USD in a poor location and then spend another 70 lack USD to renovate it to make it habitable !!

Shinoth & his wife may be earning average middleclass salaries, but their combined fulltime income makes them a higher income family and their expenses will be commensurate with that. Both people must work to live well.
