Scythe US put out an article on their website that most of their current coolers (including both versions of the Fuma 2) are compatible with AM5. I used to work for a company with a similar strategy: We were supposed to deny any news until it was official because the decisions in the management were held back from the support team right until the day the official statement went public. So we sent e-mails to customers that something doesn't work at 8:59 AM, the news went live at 9:00 AM, and the support team was officially informed many hours or days later so we had to check the public news in the meantime. The thermalright AXP90 is actually compatible with the AM5 mobos with some nuances. This doesn't take AIOs into consideration, where there's even more confusion. Corsair have said that all their AM4 AIOs are compatible with the AM5 socket. NZXT on the other hand have said that while their X and Z AIO AM4 brackets fit on an AM5 socket, there are height differences that may result in gaps between the AIO and the CPU. As a result of this, they're supplying AM5-specific brackets to anyone that has an X|Z AIO who also purchased an AM5 motherboard. This isn't some Scythe scam as NZXT are burdening the expense and giving the AM5 brackets out for free. Their reasoning must be legitimate, otherwise, why go through the effort and cost. So, just because an AM4 cooler may fit on the AM5 socket, doesn't mean that the fit will be precise.

That seems to be more of a manufacturing issue though because all of the Asetek-rebrands I've seen are 100% compatible (Corsair for example).

Hyper 212 Evo (1st gen) on AM5 is possible I have managed to install my 10-year-old Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler on my new AM5 motherboard. I already had the old AM4 X-shaped movable bracket (RR-AM4B-H212-S1) and I tried to install the cooler with that initially, but I realized that the screw slots on the motherboard were too low to hold the cooler under the bracket. All the comments on the internet said that it’s not possible to install an old cooler on a new AM5 board, but I still wanted to try my luck. So, I bought the AMD AM5 Mounting Kit (603007170-GP) from a local shop (it might be the last one in stock in my whole country), which is basically just 4 screws that lift the original screw slots about 1 cm on the motherboard. It cost no more than 2 USD. I installed the 4 screws first and then the cooler with the X-bracket after a little bit of trial and error. It finally fastened enough without any movement at all. I tried it with some games and stress tests, and the CPU (7500F) temperatures didn’t exceed 77 degrees Celsius..

Thank you for being very explicit about the retainer clips! I was searching all around for info about whether those brackets retainer clips were the same between AM4 and AM5 (needed to replace some I accidentally sold with the old MoBo)! Thanks again! Update: For anyone in my situation, needing to replace the cpu bracket clips above and below the cpu socket. I have an x670e and now can confirm from money wasted, that not all brackets are *not exactly* the same for us. The spacing between the screws on the frame don’t allow for the additional support built into a lot of stock AM4 CPU brackets clips. Not the part on the AIO, the part your AIO attaches to. I accidentally gave mine to a young person learning to build computers who needed spare parts and ordered on made for AM4 and while it fits in one direction, it doesn’t in the other and it’s the wrong way 😢. A lot of AM4 brackets seem to have a little flair of support. The AM5 bracket that came with my MoBo was slimmer and so now I’m trying to see if that kid still has my part because I can’t seem to find any online without it! This also makes me wonder if the two types of clip are actually different heights? Even if by millimeters I wonder if that would screw up your CPU? I’m replacing mine because despite everything else being ok, when I reused my Kraken on the AM5 CPU it died in two weeks. Coincidence?

FYI* Some waterblocks come with AM4 custom backplates but the backplates themselves use the same height posts and threads, 6-32. E.g., TechN AM4 Block. You can use that block with the stock backplate provided by AM4 motherboards or use their provided “custom” one. The only difference is the custom one is a) machined nicer and b) is a thicker gauge of aluminum. So the claim that EVERY AM4 cooler with custom backplates is incompatible with AM5 is WRONG. Just buy Noctua and you are set for life. I say that as an NH-D14 user. That is a CPU cooler that is over 1 decade old... +10 YEARS OLD! It's a cooler used in 2023 from 2009!!! 😁

I'm looking to update and was wondering if I could keep using my AIO cooler, this was the first result so I definitely got a lot more than a simple yes or no, but it was very interesting lol. Anyway yeah, I can just keep hanging onto this AIO cooler I have right now. I'll probably want to start thinking about replacing it in the not too distant future regardless but it's nice to know that I can put off that extra cost for a while longer :)

That's cool to know for fans and blocks, how about a liquid cooler with radiator review?

How come we do not press intel and amd to have the same cooler installation mechanisms so all coolers will always fit on all motherboards and cpu's without adapters?

Hello, congratulations for your very useful video. Just one question: what material is the mat you used for assembly made of? I would like to buy one like yours, can you suggest the model and where to buy it online? thank you so much.

LOL well this settled it for me. Black Rock just uses a clip which takes 2 seconds to install versus replacing backplates.
