i don’t hate descendants, it’s actually quite nostalgic to me and the songs are bops, but for the storyline ever after high just had a cooler concept and it expanded on it instead of doing the same “villains can be good” in every movie/episode. plus the theme song will always be superior to any song that came from the descendants franchise

They explain that he is maybe worst than his father, he believes he is chosen by God to rule the Island, he believes that woman are just woman... Like they need a man to guide them, their reproductive organs are the things that makes them weak... ok, so, im speaking as a huge fan of both franchises here; ever after high wins in all categories (worldbuilding, characters, plot and themes, etc). I could write an entire essay about this but the short version is that, to me, the writers behind ever after high thought a lot more about the story and the world, and you can absolutely see that effort. ever after high has a whimsical, fairytale-like vibe, while still making you reflect on super heavy themes such as free will or legacy AND while coming up with creative characters that aren't just carbon copies of their parents (I mean, seriously, evie for evil? raven is a regal name that's still fairly simple and that still sounds like something the evil queen would come up with). descendants, on the other hand, was only ever meant to be a quick cash grab. its a disney movie, but the costumes look like bad cosplays and were somehow supposed to believe that Eugene or aladdin would have agreed with the idea of letting innocent children grow up on the streets (and by the way, descendants did have 2 seasons worth of webisodes, plus a musical, a graphic novel AND like ten books where the worldbuilding gets only slightly better). in descendants the only character that they bother to fully flesh out is mal, whereas in ever after high we get separate character arcs for apple, raven, briar, and mini arcs for side characters like lizzie and kitty. as for the last question.....look, we obviously might never know what actually went on behind the scenes. but I think its impossible not to connect the dots and see that descendants has indirectly led to eahs downfall (whether intentionally or not). i mean, who could possibly stand against the mouse with a similar idea? descendants had so many ads and promos and what have yous, whereas ever after high mostly only had merchandise to serve as marketing; I never rly heard of it outside my fandom circles

I'm so happy someone said this, haha. I enjoy both franchises, but always thought that EAH was the better one. Descendants is known for the songs mainly, the storytelling and character development lacks. I liked that in EAH they didn't just build one character, or always make Apple look like the victim, I feel like they tend to do that with Mal, which gives me a big distaste for her. I wish producers for movies and shows would actually develop a character in their work rather than in a novel. It just made more sense, but of course, its a Disney Channel movie, so you can't expect too much I suppose, but anyway, I really liked your comment! In EAH the world if fully build. There are fairytale characters period. With Descendants they went with all Disney movie tellings which makes things awkward with the divide between the real world and the stories. Mulan has a daughter and China confirmed exists in this world so other countries do as well and then there is Auradon. Like how does that work? Different dimensions? Is just a big part of the ocean on earth replaced by Auradon and are they going a Wakanda route for the most part? I am confusion.

Here's some figures for you. Ever After High's best year of doll sales, it's third year of production, made $156 million. Descendants, across it's entire lifespan, sold about 7 million dolls. If, very optimistically here, every doll sold for $20, that would only total $140 million. For the entire time it existed. Descendants was never as successful as a doll line as people make it out to be. Ever After High was never as successful as Mattel was hoping it would be.

I’ll be honest, Descendants was good, but not as good as Ever After High. I favor Ever After High because of the story and the character development and how in-depth the show was. In my opinion, it felt like Descendants kind rehashed the whole “villains can be good” trope 3 times too many. In the books, Evie and Carlos actually become friends, and they had an amazing friendship. There was also a little more about Cruella’s abuse. I can’t remember exactly, but I think she locked him in a closet with her fur coats. (Something about a closet with fur coats. She might not have locked him in there) Edit - I looked it up. Cruella did have a closet with her furs and bear traps that Carlos wasn’t allowed into even though it was extremely cold in the winters and he didn’t have blankets. The one who got locked in the closet was Evie, and that was done by Mal.

I think the Ever After High switched at birth theory is cool! Like imagine Apple holding her destiny of being the next snow white so close just for it to be handed to Raven. Then there's Dexter being Raven's prince charming and Darling being Apple's good king and Apple being Darling's Evil Queen. I also feel like Apple would be evil just to make the point of "We all have are part to play". I feel like Apple would make a good villain. That's just my opinion tho.

This is my head-cannon. I like to think instead of EAH characters reproducing to make their children to turn out them is kinda weird, so I thought if they get their children from storks or from a wishing well/star (maybe there is another fairytale that makes babies or something that can tie into EAH). So making like a stork misplacing Raven and Apple in their respective homes can make sense. And if Raven and Apple ever realize that they were switched it could be a major turning point in the show. Apple could emphasize with Raven however Raven can show Apple that she can also be good even though she is the Evil Queen’s biological daughter. Idk it just goes to prove with the shows message that you don’t have to turn out like your parents and you can be whoever you want to be.

Honesty the main reason I like ever after high is bc the storylines are so much better. The writers really looked at what they need and said OK what can we do with this and explored the concept of going with your guests leave her going against it and flushed out their characters and the relationships that the characters have another. They also have this theme of following your destiny and how you can make your own path which is a really good message to tell your audience. Descendants doesn’t really do this they have a similar message of follow your heart and not be like your parents just because they say so but they don’t dive into it they don’t dive into the relationships are cleaned and characters they don’t really dive into how your community can make an impact on who you are which would’ve been a good thing to explore since the entire concept of the first one is how kids from an island full of villains are going to be moving to this kingdom where they have this golden opportunity to become amazing people and do something really incredible with their lives, but they don’t. They don’t explore relationship except for the small problem spending part is also the fact that putting a spell on bin which is not really addressed ever feel like it should be because I question of consent and how it’s taught but that’s an entirely different discussion but the point is that they really could have dived into how being on a team or having someone believe that you are more than just a pretty face and that you can do things impact someone and contrast that to them still being a small group because they are still outsiders despite these connections. There’s just a lot more that the writers for descendants never flushed out or dived into instead it kind of just felt like a way for them to sell songs while showing off this pretty concept that has been done before but a bit better because they didn’t limit themselves to just basic relationships that we don’t really see develop.

This is it EXACTLYYY. I feel like they relied so much on the gimmick/didn't have faith in the story there were telling despite there being so many interesting aspects of it. The closest they got to really getting into it was the ham-fisted "tear down the wall" thing in the last movie. The dedication to telling a good story that the creators of EAH had was just not there in Descendants... that or Disney just didn't have faith in the audience they were marketing to to absorb more profound themes.

Pretty sure the story of Disney getting mad at Mattel is true. They had made dolls with Mattel for decades and didn’t want them making Ever After High dolls probably for brand reasons, they later on went on to partner with Hasbro for doll lines. I think one of my FAVORITE plot twists of EAH was finding out the Narrators follow the story as well: the Mom is a Royal clearly, the Father is a rebel obviously-but the plot twist that Brooke their daughter, who we of course knew was all for everyone following their hearts and all for a happy ending and for both royals and rebels, turned out to the the symbol on EAH the girl on the key just blew my mind, like I didn’t even realize it-it came out of nowhere and I’m glad I never looked up for any spoilers when watching the show

A teaser for the School for Good and Evil movie just came out and I've seen so many people comparing these three stories, so this video kind of came at the perfect time. I think there are so many ways to do this concept and out of the three franchises, Descendants chose the most obvious reading. Ever After High nailed the fairytale/storybook aesthetic and with the budget that Descendants had, I'm surprised that the style was executed so poorly. It's like they were trying to mix "modern" with a general sense of "magic" with the bad wigs and the punk-adjacent clothing, but it just ended up looking so cheap.

Jane was given a lot of screentime compared to farah and her character isn't developed to that extent.I totally agree with you on the more likable thing but farrah had quite the character development in just the little amount of screen time she was given,Audreys character could also have been better if she was shown as an innocent genuinely nice and optimistic girl in the 1st movie,slightly to the dark side(jealousy and stuff)in the 2nd and evil in the 3rd. When it comes to costumes, I loved descendants for their looks for the villains. All of the villains from isle of the lost I liked. It’s a shame we spend more time with the royals because in comparison the kingdom looks basic. But story wise, yes ever after high had the superior story. As much as we all love the bad guys turning good stories, descendants didn’t do anything that new that hasn’t been done. Ever after high gives a unique spin on the fairy tale characters. Apple wants to stick to her story cuz she obviously gets a happy ending, but raven doesn’t because she doesn’t want to be a villain. Apple seems selfish to want raven to sign the book for her own story but she explains she also is worried what will happen to her friends if raven doesn’t sign. Neither girl is painted as the villain. Ever after high, both the royals and rebels had interesting designs that had unique touches that connect to their stories. If I had any critique it’s mostly a nitpick of the obvious similar faces and body types of a majority of the female characters and the males. But I loved monster high and it also did that too, but with a little more variety in faces.

I do like the punk-flair the villain kids had in descendants, it makes sense with their role in the story, although I believe they could have had other influences (maybe looking to inspiration from vivienne westwood or other edgy designers from the era?) and more attention to design, since it feels they just wear leather suits and hair dye in their respective color palettes. I think maybe then their costumes could’ve been amped up to be as iconic as ever after high’s.

to answer ur questions in the beginning. mattel was originally the company creating disney’s doll lines (princess dolls and such) and then mattel released ever after high… ive never heard of ever after high being some sort of middle finger to disney, but disney got pissed and not only stopped production w mattel, but also released the descendants series. since mattel lost the revenue they had once secured from disney, their doll quality saw a drastic drop, and it eventually led to ever after high stopping. that’s just how i remember the sequence of events off the top of my head.

Descendants I feel was kind of afraid to explore more darker things in the movies so though it was fun, as an adult it didn't make me think too hard. The big difference in Descendants is that good or evil seems to be a status thing. Like all of the villains were sealed in a prison. While in Ever After High children of villains are respected as villains, just not if they try to step out of that role. That's why I find the latter a lot more compelling as opposed to "bad people are bad and are kept on a prison island" is a boring status quo compared to "we all have an expected future and yours just happens to involve you being terrible and then being punished". It feels a lot more nuanced and realistic to me. Descendants is people from the bad group trying to join the good group whole Ever After High it's trying to break down expectations for everyone cause like even some of the characters who get good endings don't like their destiny cause of what they have to go through.

From what I understand from an Izzzyzzz video, descendants was in pre-production when ever after high came up as an idea, so the theory is that Mattel saw the idea of the kids of fairytale characters and tried to pump out a series before Disney.

I like Descendents but I feel like all the effort was put into Mal as a character well everyone else except maybe for Uma was disappointing. The movies themselves don't even make sense with Disney Princess lore. Why doesn't Jane have magic. Evie apparently has magic but she doesn't use it so she's just a nice girl character. Also Jay should also have magic considering Jafar got turned into a genie in Aladdin and even though magic is outlawed on the Isle of the Lost when he came to Auradon he could have discovered his magical abilities which could have furthered Carlos' storyline he had in the books of always feeling left out in comparison to the other 3 of the Core Four Also, and I know this might be an unpopular opinion but they should have included the direct to video sequels the original movies had because it expanded the lore and would've had better impacted the story

From what I know, Mattel used to manufacture Disney princess dolls. A decade ago, there was a resurge of interest in fairy tales with Once Upon A Time being on tv. Then Mattel made eah to get in on that. They did not have to pay Disney a cent bc they were using the original source material. Mattel even made a doll line. This tension escalated to the point where Disney made the switch from Mattel to Hasbro for the princess dolls. The final nail in the coffin for Mattel was that Disney Channel made Descendents, knowing people would flock to anything with a Disney label. Needless to say that ever after high deserved better. I would definitely recommend the descendants books because there's a LOT more context for the movies and character motivations. It also highlights more of the dark aspects of every villain parent, quite a few of which are emotionally abusive. The movies didn't do enough to really flesh out that backstory but it was notable.

I'm a Descendants fan for complicated reasons. I had a brief mild fascination with Disney characters in the middle of my high school years. So once I learned that there was going to be a movie about their kids, I decided to give it a watch. It helped that this was during a time where I was constantly stressed studying for the SATs, so I just did literally anything I could to entertain myself, and Descendants turned out to be good enough. As a teenage boy I should have just dismissed Descendants as some cringey little kid shit (which is exactly what I did for EAH), but I didn't. Maybe I should give EAH a chance, but I'm also literally too lazy/uninterested to get into some franchises.

I have a weird fondness for Descendants but I do so agree with the points in this video. The thing with Descendants is because Disney has the Disney Money, it could’ve been so much better, and not even just in terms of money-related things. The potential was so great and it just felt half-baked at best. Both are imo not totally thought out well, but considering EAH was really intended to sell dolls as opposed to being a whole media franchise of movies and shorts… Yeah, gotta hand it to EAH. The designs are so much better, I really like how EAH has the characters looking somewhat unique to their specific story or at least the roles (like the visual similarities with the princesses’ looks) whereas in Descendants there’s this overall look for the Isle and one for Auradon. Overall, my favorite thing about both franchises is to look into what it could have been and the implications between the lines, but yeah. EAH was better for what it was imo

i have always blamed descendants for the end of ever after high but- MAN DESCENDANTS IS MY SH!T like- yeah it’s absolute trash at some points but i have this weird appreciation for it- this appreciation was pulled forward even more by the MUSICAL version of Descendants- which- goes SO HARD- every character gets their development, chad is actually funny and Audrey really just seems like a misguided kid who had things taken from her and that made her bitter- all in all- the musical makes me love descendants- i might be biased because i’ve done a production of it as Jay- but man the characters are fun and goofy and ben literally has some of the funniest lines and an amazing character compared to the bland movie version- he and Mal both sing If Only, on THE ISLE- because they combined some stuff from the second movie(INCLUDING SPACE BETWEEN) into the plot of the first- and it’s just beautiful and they even use some tunes from the third movie but in a cool and new way but as much as i love descendants- Ever After High will ALWAYS take the cake- everything about it was compelling and angsty and captivating and the designs were gorgeous and each character was beautifully written with complexity and the books only further expanded on that- the books for Descendants(The Isle of The Lost series) are contradictory to the movies and really just feel like a different franchise with the same characters

I am more biased towards EAH because it was the biggest fixation I had as a youngling. But I loved Descendants music wise. It just gave good energy and vibes. Princesses are NOT Disney's domain. Barbie does princesses and is owned by Mattel. For the longest time the Barbie movies all centered around princesses. The Fairytopia trilogy is the only solid break from the princess thing(even its Mariposa spin off pair had a princess movie). The Barbie and her Sister's movies mostly broke away from it, too until a more recent movie(after the dreamhouse series). The overall point though, is that Barbie will never truly lose its pink princess image.

I have to admit, I am a Descendants fan, somewhat now that is. I've went through mini concerning phases right when Descendants 2 and 3 came out. Even during those reception short stories while Evie and Mal prepared for Mal and Ben's irrelevant wedding. But now seeing that Ever After High could've probably come back alongside Monster High, (yes, could've. I'll get to that in a second) if Descendants didn't confirm another two more sequels really bothers me. Yes, Descendants is good and even amazing in its own ways, but do we really need two more? The original fans have already moved on, (The biggest presumably being Disney Descender) and the fact that they "have" to recast Cameron Boyce's role as Carlos says it all. They already confirmed he's dead in the universe so technically these next two movies won't be canon. However, why even make them if they aren't going to be? That's what Wattpad is for. Also, the next two movies already got teased at the end of the royal wedding (they are being revolved around wonderland/queen of hearts daughter) and since Carlos was confirmed to be dead in that special, it might fool younger audiences into thinking that Cameron is still alive. Which could possibly be even more damaging to the little kids even before they initially figured out, he died.

Well, from what i know, disney and matel were not working together, but matel is used to do this themed hogh school shows to sell dolls and EAH was the best one in my opinion, but the show ended around the same time descandents was made. Matel obviously wanted to continue the show but since princesses and magic was like disney's stuff (even though they didn't CREATED it and they were not right to think this way, cause EAH involves characterd from fairytales, not from disney), they made descandents, which is straight up just a copy of a better and much more well produced frenchise.

Descendants was pretty good and I enjoyed it and the songs, but I absolutely love the storyline of ever after high. Descendants was just about how "villains can be good and heros can be bad" Meanwhile EAH taught about how people perceive each other, either as a villain or as a hero. And that it's not just black and white, anyone can be a villain or hero in someone else's story book. Idk if that was the intended lesson, but thats what I picked up and I love it

I love Ever After High so much, so it was a huge shock when it went away (I literally was there for the announcement trailer of EAH). I boycotted watching Descendants for the longest time because I was so devastated that EAH had been cancelled because of it. I eventually watched the whole series about a year or so ago. Descendants has so much potential, because it piggy-backs off a great, stolen concept. It, however, does almost nothing with its concepts and instead goes for the weirdest character arcs it possibly can. Uma is the most interesting character, followed closely by Evie, and they really miss the mark. I think Mal is also interesting but they completely ignore consequences as a whole so she never learns her lesson when it comes to her relationship with evil, especially when it comes to her past. I was wanting a talk between Uma and Mal where Mal apologized for the bullying when they were children and they both came to terms with the fact that they went through the same traumatic upbringing but instead it gets so glossed over...

Can I be honest, I don't want the Ever After High to continue, simply because I think they'll ruin it while trying to make it more modern and more "beautiful". On the topic of Faybelle kissing up to the evil queen. Have tou considered it coming from a place of genuine fear. Faybelle is terrified of having the same consequences as her mother. That could also be why she is so determined to be Evil, in order to ensure that she was safe in her destiny.

Honestly, I think a much better comparison would be to Twisted Wonderland. For one, they are both animated. Two, the Japanese version of Twisted Wonderland is sorta like Descendants if it was geared towards towards teens and adults. It tackles a lot more mature subject matter like body dysmorphia/ internalized fatphobia, bullying, depression, abuse, loss and indentured servitude. The Japanese version has some characters swear, including Leona and Deuce saying, "Fuck," on multiple occasions. It has better world building than Descendants since all of the Disney villains are historical figures minus Hades. I would love to see you tackle that one.

@@aurorachanel4502 It's not a show, it's a mobile app. There's an English version for it if you live in North America. However, I would recommend watching the fan translations by Shel_BB on KZbin a lot more, since the official English version is a lot more water down and like a 4Kids dub anime in a written format whereas the fan subs stick a lot close to the original script and is more geared towards an older audience. Since the official version is just subtitled anyways, your gonna be stuck reading subtitles either way, so you might as well go with the more accurate version. There's also gonna be an anime version of it in the future, but who knows when that's gonna come out in Japan let alone the west.

I think that Ever After High was better but mainly because there were so many unanswered questions from Descendants and it definetly didnt live up to what people thought it did and the storyline was messed up also focusing it on Mal was a terrible move I personaly would have loved more of the other other charectors anyways thats my opinion I love both the series though

The reason why Ever After High worked where descendents failed was that EAH showed that both sides were flawed and weren't afraid to have their leads to be flawed and even have their selfish moments Take Raven and Apple for example, while Raven does mean while to let people choose who they want to be and is selfless, she doesn't fully understand the consequences such as the faries disappearing, not to mention this all started cause she wanted to change her fate, it doesn't make her a bad person, but it allows her to have flaws, unlike Mal who the films paint her as flawless that always makes the right choice. While Apple could've easily been the cliche spoiled brat that would eventually become the main villain and do the whole 'oh the hero of the story is actually a villian' like what they did with Audrey, but they showed that she's genuinely a kindhearted person who cares for Raven, but also allows her to be a flawed character and even have her selfish moments but the series calls her and Raven out on it and they both learn from their mistakes and grows as a character along with the others Thats what I loved about EAH, unlike descendents where it tried to paint one side wrong and the other right. EAH had the guts to show that there wasn't a right or wrong side, it wasn't black and white, Raven and Apple had motivations that could been seen as both selfless but also selfish. Apple was selfish because she wanted to secure her own happy ending and unintentionally ignoring her friends that stories aren't as happy as hers, buts selfless because she genuinely believed that she was protecting everyone and doing the right thing. Raven was selfless cause she wanted everyone to be able to choose their own destiny, but was selfish because she was motivated by her own self interest and was willing to put everyone's life in danger so she could get a happy ending for herself. The fact that a web series made to sell dolls had a much more deep and nuance message then what disney has been making in the past few years really says something

I love both projects equally, but I like that Descendants is surprised at least some attention to the male characters (I can say what Karlas, Jay and Ben like and don't like, and with Ever After High I can't say because they didn't reveal the male characters at all. Also in Ever After High, all the guys play the role of doll Boyfriends, not personalities (Even Alistair is just Bunny's boyfriend, not a personality)

I just realized what the blue pushover is named, your telling me they named her Evee? Eevee? They couldn’t even come up with a name that isn’t the most popular Pokémon? (Or second because picachu I guess) EAH wins one million times over with names too, couldn’t come up with a name for Maleficent so they just shorten it to “Mal”, all the names in descendants are trash and then in EAH it’s like they hired multiple writers just to come up with the perfect names (maybe they did, idk) like Cerise Hood, Apple white, Raven queen, Brair Rose, MADELINE HATTER???? They’re all just so good then they’ve got Pokémon girl and Mal and whatever the boys are named, oh yeah how does “Ben” relate to Beauty and the Beast? Who knows maybe they just set a rule for Descendants that all the main characters have to have 3 letter names so that kids could remember how to spell it for their Christmas list toys. Descendants won in songs, and that’s about it EAH was just too high quality to compete with, even for Disney.

With Ever After High, it had an amazing amount of potential, and the characters were surprisingly complex (I even made a google doc describing how several of the characters were complex). And while I do love the show, even if it continued, I doubt they would really take advantage of that. My main concern when it comes to Ever After High world building is who the other parent is, and how are people not getting with their siblings? Of course, it helped when Dexter explained there were many Charming families who weren't related. But it's still a bit concerning.

Ever After High was WAY BETTER than Descendants. Now looking back, it really looks like someone wrote a fanfic of the Disney Villains having children. They rehashed the whole “villains become good” trope one too many times to the point it gets annoying, like the “human falls in love with hot vampire” annoying. We get it Disney! All of your movies are the same!!! I think Ever After High had way better character development and story line, but it also felt original, and they didn’t just include the typical princesses, they had diverse and inclusive characters. That’s what I love about Ever After High. The character designs, the show and everything was so good!!! WHAT THE HELL DISNEY?!?!

Actually Mattel originally was gonna make cosmic high but mga made novi stars so Mattel made ever after high which angered Disney so they took away the rights to make Disney dolls and handed it over to hasbro. So then that’s why the quality of mh and eah went downhill due to not much money. So then descendants added to the downhill of ever after high. Yes, Mattel and Disney we’re working together, because Disney never creates their own toys/doll lines. They tended to go through either Mattel or Hasbro. After the situation with ever after high, they used Hasbro for a long time. However, I think they recently reestablished their working relationship with Mattel. Sincerely, a doll lover.
