Finally someone has answered clearly whether a bulb has to be removed from the pot or can be stored (winterized) in the pot. Thank you!

Thank you Sir. I just found your channel. My mother always grew amaryllis and I always thought they were so pretty. I live in Houston, zone 9, and I just found some amaryllis in the garden center. It said to just start watering them, but I had originally thought I would plant them outside but was confused if I should or just wait until til the last frost and then put them outside in my flowerbed or pots. Not sure what would be best. I just subscribed to your channel, so I know you will have some good information. God bless you Sir.

Mr Johnston - I followed your advice to a T & guess what? Out of a dozen or so bulbs I refrigerated, I have 4 bulbs with scapes :) I live in sunny Malaysia, therefore it is simply not possible to winterise anything, right. So, forced blooming by refrigeration is the only way to go. Thank you Mr Johnston 😄😁🤣

In Auckland New Zealand we leave them out but I put them in a shady place under a tree! The bits,that fall of the free provides food for them. I add a bit once in a while and when the buds come. They bloomed a bit early this year, Xmas almost here but flowering has finished. But I am buying a new one from the supermarket, they got some beauties! And will flower for Christmas!

Hi Mr Johnston - a bit of feedback if it helps. I recently lost 31 bulbs I had tried to winterize in the fridge. I didn't realise my fridge temp had suddenly gone colder than usual. My bulbs got frost-bitten & tried real hard to save them despite having gone soft & mushy. To no avail now. All gone . So now another friend has suggested I simply need to keep them dry in a dark place for 2 months like the pantry or even under the bed! Am trying it out in the pantry now. Hope to keep them in for 6 - 8 weeks.
@AmaryllisMan2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the dry dark place is definity the right place to keep your bulbs. A cool temperature up around 50 * will keep them in dormancy.

I had an Amaryllis that after flowering last year, developed many green leaves in the windowsill above the heater until the winter. I wanted to force new flowering, I stopped watering, the leaves remained fresh and green. Then I cut the fresh leaves from the bulb, peeled the brown membrane from the bulb and waited for what would happen. When the bulb showed new growth after a few weeks of giving it little water again. Now the bulb again has two sturdy flower stems, one bud is already flowering with 5 flowers, the other is still growing.

Just bought a bunch of bulbs here in South Africa. I would love to leave mine in the ground during winter without fear of it freezing. Please tell me, what is your winter minimum temperatures where you are?
@AmaryllisMan2 күн бұрын
Amaryllis cannot take freezing temperatures. If it is going to freeze here, we cover our plants. It does not come a hard freeze in the Panhandle of Florida. Maybe 5 times it will get below freezing and we will have to cover.

Great video, bless you and thank you. I do have a question however: I live in Michigan but we have been keeping our amaryllis indoors in front of the south facing window that gets a lot of sun and heat. We followed the directions that came with our bulb to force it into dormancy and have had great luck with blooms and our one bulb is now 3 full bulbs which bloom. If I don’t care about forcing the bloom for a certain date such as Christmas, can I just leave it in the pot year round? I assume I would need to cut it back after blooming, or should I just cut the stalk and leave the leaves?
@AmaryllisMan5 жыл бұрын
Forcing is not a requirement nor do amaryllis have to have a dormant period. Continue to water and fertilize your indoor plant and it will do just fine. Of course, in the summertime you can set it outside to receive more sunlight. The flower scape can be cut back after blooming. thanks, The Johnstons

Thank you for this information. Much of the information I found was either over explained or did not explain. These are just the answers I needed. I would like to time the bloom to be for around my birthday rather then the holidays. I was given Amaryllis as a birth name, so I would really love this to flower around a time more meaningful to me.

I've tried doing this probably 5 years in a row and whenever I plant them in November or December the immediately grow leaves and Thrive but they never grow a bloom. I normally buy a bunch from the home supply store and they bloom in a few weeks right around Christmas or later and then I let them grow all year until around September or October and then I cut away the leaves trim the roots a little and refrigerate them for hopefully at least eight weeks. I've read online that they should start producing the flower stalk when they're ready but mine always produce leaves not a flower stalk. I'm sure many will think that they did not recharge enough throughout the season but they grow so many leaves that grow so large that I think it must be recharged. Any clue what I might be doing wrong? My favorite flower, I get so heartbroken every year hoping for a flower stock and it ends up just being leaves. Thanks
@greg556667 жыл бұрын
I don't know, I am totally just guessing, but maybe you're not letting them sit dormant long enough? Maybe try trimming and refrigerating them in August or the end of July, then don't plant them till the beginning of November. Again, totally just a guess, but it's something to try a little different.
@bernadettekennedy29817 жыл бұрын
Travis J. Reed I have never tried It but if you got a grow light with red lights , red is supose to cause flower growth or put it in a window with sun untill it starts to bloom. Also try feeding the bulbs flower ferterlizor with phoferous. You can use bananas.
@TravisJReed7 жыл бұрын
Lion Alesso all of them have bloomed before when I first bought them and many of them have grown leaves every year after forcing them but never a flower again. I normally let them stay dormant at least 2 months. Because this is Vegas there really isn't a place to put them that's ideal so I normally end up putting them in like the crisper in the refrigerator so at least they stay cool and I normally cover them with something dark so they don't get any light. They sprout up leaves pretty quickly and they get a ridiculous amount of sun and grow an unbelievable amount of huge leaves throughout the year. I don't think I've ever given them any kind of fertilizer before and you're right I should. I might go to Home Depot tomorrow and try to find something. Someone said I could do bananas for phosphorus and I do have dried banana chips at the house so maybe I can try putting some of that in the soil? Not sure. I just brought them out a couple weeks ago and almost all of them have an inch or two of leaves coming out already but no flower yet.

@@greg55666 If you refrigerate the bulbs do you put them in something like a plastic bag or container or just put them in the fridge?

+elf gem I'm sorry, I'm not the person to ask, I have no idea. I would guess just put them in the fridge. If you keep them in the basement (or in the ground) they would be breathing, so it seems wrong to seal them in the fridge.

The Rising Garden no, you have to put it into a cool place and cut the amarryllis, or leave the leaf until yellow and dry leaf. Then leave it NO watering.

I know this is a late reply & I hope yours did alright but as far as the bulb in the soil, you're only suppose to put the bottom 1/4 portion in the soil. Maybe that's what went wrong?
