For those of you that are having issues with the USB Drive, where it does NOT show up in ES Explorer, make sure to turn OFF "USB Debugging". If "USB Debugging" is enabled the Fire TV device will NOT detect USB accessories. I have accessed a USB Flash drive formatted with NTFS through ES File Explorer on a Fire TV 2nd Generation and I was able to play video files larger than 4GB in Kodi, so this method is not necessarily limited to the Fire TV Stick 4K or the Fire TV Stick Max like other commenters have suggested.

Is it necessary to use KODI as the Player. Could I instead use MXPlayer or VLC Player? Also, could I use Total Commander or X-Plore rather than ES File Explorer? Thank You!
@ade531001gmail4 жыл бұрын
ES File Explorer handles it two ways. The way TechDoctorUK showed provides the max options. If you click directly on a MKV file it offers internal ES Player amongst other internal apk’s and MX Player. I played my video that way. I plan to compare the others. I have X-Plore and Total Commander as well. I don’t believe they offer this method of mounting a drive, because they don’t have access.
@ade531001gmail4 жыл бұрын
After mounting an NTFS drive from ES Explorer l found the drive number might change session by session. Eventually, it gets analyzed on the home page showing used/capacity MB. I power my NTFS harddrive down when it’s idle. ES Explorer launches when I plug it back in. Using the hamburger menu focused on one video file >Play As >Video >Kodi launches the Kodi player and it is capable of sophisticated control of the file content. Highlighting the sequential collection of video files comprising the DVD movie does not provide the Play as option. I haven’t mapped the drive in Kodi, so it hasn’t added the collection of movies to the library. A DVD MKV movie doesn’t play as a sequential collection like my WD TV. Anybody know how?

I wouldn't bother with this method. I have not tried it myself, but seeing as people report issues with playback stopping, I am willing to bet that ES File Explorer is the 'man in the middle' that sends data to the target application like Kodi or VLC, so it's not native functionality and I wouldn't trust it (it's probably what's causing delays and issues with playback). The OS and apps can't see the drive natively so in apps like Kodi, the media cannot be browsed, defeating the point of using Kodi. You have to always use this ES File Explorer to open a file - sounds like a pain! Also, this file explorer has been in the news for containing malware! Aside from the reported playback issues, you may want to use this method on a one-off basis if you're desperate to play a file over 4GB, but for long-term use it's hardly pretty is it? I only started looking into this, and have explored getting a cheap NAS made from Raspberry Pi (ready-made ones selling on Amazon). In the meantime, there is a site that shows how you can use WinRAR to simply split the file into 4095MB chunks (use the 'Store' method). Then copy the .rar files onto FAT32 normally. Kodi apparently is able to read those as if they were normal media files (I haven't got this far yet, you may need to download an addon if it doesn't do it out of the box; I haven't got that far yet to see if this works). Google "How to play files larger than 4GB off the Fire TV's FAT32" for the article. BTW, I used EaseUS Partition Manager to format a large drive as FAT32 since Windows won't do it (shocking). Overall, a little clumsy solution, which takes time to split large files and relies on Kodi to play rar files, but I intend to only use Kodi and this HDD will be only for the Fire stick. BTW, this is a cheap 500GB HDD I bought for peanuts on Amazon and put into a cheap enclosure. It's not SSD and appears to work (some said something about needing SSD or low power drive, but perhaps they were messing about with this ES method or something else didn't work for them, but an HDD appears to work fine for me). Hope this helps.

Seems like a common issue with no solution that I could find. It really makes the whole approach pointless.

This doesn’t work and every movie I have tried to watch using this method stops playing about an hour into the running time. I gave up and just run larger files from a laptop connected to my tv or projector. I’d rather do that than ruin the experience of a film crashing mid watch

It does not work on my firestick lite, when I go halfway through the movie it stops and I can't finish watching it when my USB / hard drive is NTFS. But if it's FAT32, I can finish the movie :( The only way for me is cut my movies, to be able to copy in my FAT32 hard drive.

FX File Explorer will do the same thing, and it's a bit more Firestick friendly, IMO. I even have an NTFS network drive, shared with FTP, and it works for that too. So, I can plug my 1TB USB HD into my router, and access it via the shortcut I made when I entered the login info, easily. I also use ES File Explorer, but for other things. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. For most tasks, I find FX to work best. Of course, I also have direct network access to my laptop drives, even my external drive. Once you map them, you can access almost any drive. You can launch any file from any drive mapped with ES or FX File Explorer. And you can play any video with MX Player, or whichever default video app you prefer.

The FX File pro version is only $3 more (one time) so its way better than ES File Explorer price of $10 a month on amazon subscription.

It did not work for me with PNY USB 64gb memory :(
@kevinj82584 жыл бұрын
just FYI and major note that this WILL NOT WORK unless you have a low power and fast SSD drive, and that the ES File Explorer app on amazon is $10 a month subscription. Definitely use the ES File version that TDUK has on his links to get this running; as that specific version does not cost anything. You can also try FX FILE EXPLORER as another alternative (on Google Play for side loading) that claims it works, but as with anything do lots of tests. --- Noticing that this WILL NOT WORK with an HDD as those require significant power and they go to sleep on USB connections. You might need to use a SSD (solid state drive) or a just a big fast low power USB memory stick. Kind of disappointed that TDUK did not do more testing of this with various HDD USB solutions, as it must be a specific drive that works with NTFS, because the three drives and USBs I tested did not work; while only a fast small USB memory did work. --//// THIS DID NOT WORK ////-- Format a usb stick to FAT32 reads no problem. Format to NTFS and will not read with ES FILE EXPLORER. DEFINITIVE test failure.

The same for me, I tested it with SSD drive and it doesn't work, the video is opening but later is stopping or after forwarding it's stopping as well.
@bugmanmd15762 жыл бұрын
Yes same with me. Video would play for a few minutes and then cut out. You couldn't really fast forward with it. Really not useable. Went back to FAT32 format Just cut your long movies into two separate pieces. Way better than having choppy playback and unreliable performance with ntfs.
@Everything_Comes_And_Goes Жыл бұрын
