Never tried the Manila variety of mango. I’ve recently planted an entire section of my orchard with mangos. 16 different varieties in total now, most less than a year old, but my Glenn is 4 and the mangos are pretty good. Maybe my favorite varieties are the Coconut Cream, Orange Sherbet and Lemon Meringue. Can’t wait for them to bear fruit!

Stay safe! Here in Fort Worth, Texas my mango trees did well in the winter but as soon as the weather outside got warm and the climate control inside kicked the thermostat to the cold side, the mangos weren't willing to compromise. I should have taken them outside but it was already too late. The damage was done.

I'm zone 9b socal, its gonna be a little, but I'm gonna try and try again until I have my own mangoes! They're the best fruit, and I want to experience picking my own in my yard. You never see mango or banana in this area, and I think it would be so cool.

With this heavy rainfall, the glenn mango didn’t make it, but the Manila is coming back. The Glenn Mango also struggled while the weather was great for the past three years, but the excessive rain pushed it to its edge.

I agree on grafted mangos. In the Philippines people just plant seeds to grow mangos in the yard which is what I am doing here. I tried a grafted Pickering and although it flowered it never grew.
@ZaatarGardens2 жыл бұрын
Three years in ground, the grafted variety grows a lot slower than the one that’s a seedling
@thehuntfortruth Жыл бұрын
Pickering is a dwarf variety. Dwarfs need to be on a super active rootstock to get any growth out of them on the west coast. Our climate doesn't allow it to flourish like in FL. Pickering especially needs to be on something vigorous like corriente, Valencia pride, lemon mirenge, Saigon etc
@growyourownavocados Жыл бұрын
@@thehuntfortruth Yes, Tropical Central Valley believes Manilla rootstock could help with these Florida varieties. I have no doubt that Terpentine rootstock doesn't do well in Cal. I am just growing Manillaa from seeds now and they are thriving!

Mangoes love the heat. The hotter the better. Grow in India with 45C (120F?) With humidity. High night temperatures even better. Glenn tends to be slower in temperate climates from my experience but more cold tolerant. Never remove leaves from the rootstock just shoots. Best to go for stronger growth seedlings (polyembronic true to type is best but probably get a decent tasting fruit from a monoembronic) I wouldn't plant or prune a tree until late spring after the last chance of frost and continously warm. The tip protects the point. Pruning/exposes the upper branch to any frost early in the growing season. Check out Gary Gragg. He's in central California. Found one growing in the north at 38 degress. Another in Spain. Shows the microclimates. Has a palm nursery and grows advanced stock.

I am in Los Angeles. Growing several mango trees. It's less about 6 months old. If you send me your email I'll send you photos. You can grow mango from seeds in pot but you still need to take the pot outside for sun because mango trees love the sun and take it inside during winter so it would survive the cold weather and grow.
