So John malecki tried (and failed) to recreate this. He was using what looks like dry southern yellow pine so big surprise, but the number of people in his comments saying it is fake or that you are trimming off a layer of finish/wax/glue/resin is making my head hurt.

I just recreated this in spruce. Besides having a really sharp chisel (not just hair cutting, but hair splitting level) the wood also needs to be soaked. Bone dry spruce crumbles instantly. Also, if one tries in hinoki, Port Orford or Alaska cypress, the results are again better.

@@luthiermarian the day the video came out I went and tried it on a piece of basswood and my results didn't look as nice but it worked and his video now has >500 comments and easily 70% of them are just comments trying to figure out how this was fake because none of them seem to work wood.

It's wonderful to cut Japanese hinoki (cypress) for thin shavings. Other woods is not possible

Sorry, I got it from an acquaintance and I don't know the manufacturer. The only thing I can say is that it's a common chisel, not a particularly expensive one!

Nice sharpness, not exclusive to japanese chisels though. If you want to impress, demonstrate the same on other wood types than Hinoki.
