After watching this my biggest concern is the combat. This is giving off a sandbox mmo vibe(a never finished fantasy Rust)
@andrewadams8601
@andrewadams8601 Жыл бұрын
The game's site describes it as a "Social Sandbox MMO", which does seem to indicate that combat will not be it's main focus. It sounds like they are trying to adapt the style of Eve Online to a swords and sorcery MMO, which sounds interesting to me. I personally don't find the combat of Eve Online particularly engaging, so hopefully they won't let combat take a back seat for this game. It works okay for a space sim, but for a much more personal game where you are controlling a character, I don't think that having lackluster combat will go over as well.

I love their enthusiasm - especially the focus on social. I think people may be misunderstanding what they mean by "social + sandbox" here - old school MMOs were designed in a way that strongly encouraged people to actually team up and work together. New school theme-park MMOs are basically single player games and a lobby to queue for dungeon runs with a group of randoms. It's so transactional that most people never even say a word during the run. It might be hard to change the MMO meta though?

Agreed, as an old mmo player, I can't help but notice most younger people care nothing about making friends online. Although, after some recently bad experiences with a few people I can imagine why.
@attinger117
@attinger117 Жыл бұрын
@@douglasduda9826 I actually think it’s older players who enjoy the theme park single player style MMOs. A lot of the social aspects of older MMOs took a lot of time to do. Finding groups, setting them up, going to the instance etc. Older players have families, jobs, kids, etc and overall don’t have the time to commit to these online social activities. These are the players that grew up with social sandbox MMOs and still want to play the MmO genre but the more casual style of play fits their adult lifestyle.

The legacy of "hardcore mmo players" led to focus on grind and obtaining stuff combined with mechanics meant to artificially boost time played (because number of concurrent/regular players and combined time spent in game became the only measure of game's quality and predictor of success other than revenue) like daily chores which genuinely turn people away (game is supposed to be a fun distraction or challenge, not a second job wtf). The problem is you don't need other people for any of this, in fact they're a hindrance because you can't achieve what you want to achieve when you want to achieve it. You're bound to them, have to prioritise their time and their goals as much as yours. If the objective is to collect stuff and beat mobs why make it a multiplayer game at all? As a side note the common complaint that "mmos aren't mm" keeps missing the fact that most MMOs seem to completely ignore the rp and the g parts of the genre - they're mechanics-focused chore simulators. These issues also contribute to the problem and I think it's obvious in what way so i ain't gonna lay it out, instead consider this: if it's not focused on fun and meaningful interactions where others are necessary due to organic reasons, not arbitrary requirements, why even have graphics and animations if I can instead fill in spreadsheets?

"Armor and weapons in the game are historically accurate" is something i wouldn't necessarily say judging by the armor shown when he said it at 13:34 That coif is more of a Hollywood-style coif with how loose and open it is. And the hauberk also seems a bit loose and flappy. Historically plausible? Absolutely. But wealthy knights had their armor custom made and tightly fit to their own body size.

Hopefully the journey to end game is just as enjoyable as the end game itself. I feel this is what is lacking in most MMOs in the last 10 years. One thing that was a red flag for me is the cross platform approach, I'm also skeptical when developers spend resources on side tasks like making a "casual" side play option. Also the head of studio basically has never played an MMO? Looking forward to hearing more though, always rooting for another good MMO.

I wouldn't be too worried about the cross platform approach. Since it's a survival sandbox MMO, being cross plat shouldn't be a hurdle. There are plenty of survival games that play just as good as it's PC counter parts. You can still get a MMO experience from a controller IF implemented correctly, but since they are going so heavy on the survival sandbox side of this MMO, I have no bad feeling about it being cross play. So far to me the game looks like a prettier Conan Exiles except MMO and hopefully with more competent devs. Finger crossed, really hope this game does magical stuff. Loved Ark and Conan Exiles and love playing MMOs and this looks to bring both of them into a single game (which is a dream game to me)

@@brandonenke2680 I don't have a problem with cross plat just that it takes a lot of focus to do when it's their first big MMO maybe that should come later. @@douglasduda9826 Very good point. I belive that ppl have lost that sence of goal. Where you dont have dots pointing everywhere and a story, but you need to go out and find a dungeon, monster, lore etc. You can still have quests that tell interesting things and chain togheter, but it doesnt always have to be "kill this (insert threat) or world will burn". Just being able to enjoy exploring and finding hidden parts, killing a strong enemy and get better loot. Is really fun. Now there might be an mmo out there that I have missed, but feels like its not. I think Pax dei looks pretty cool and surprisingly super chill to be considered an mmo. Mmo usually give off grind vibes but this look like everday virtual life vibes. I just hope it actually comes to fruition. Huge run on sentence incoming: I think for an mmo rather than progressive skill leveling (gear score /item level) it should incorporate progressive leveling based on player skill/performance (like for honor, where skill and item stats play a small role but the overall player experience and skill per character class can be used to advantage). I think it would be a cool idea if this was implemented in a "mmo" type game because new players would be able to jump in and not feel overwhelmed to catch up to consistent players and end game players can constantly find challenge in human trial and error via experimentation and boss/mob variation and not have to hide behind gear score and item level for content.

After trying out Return of Reckoning again, and a few other old MMORPGs, I realized that the graphics don't matter much to me, nor the engine, nor the sound. The biggest thing that I miss, and wish was just a standard thing now, is a lack of shitty monetization. If it's cosmetic, I'd love to say "that's fine" but too many games then sell the best cosmetics, and nothing in the game drops naturally. Then it's boosting, XP bonuses, inventory expansions, and so on. I don't mind paying a monthly fee so long as I don't have to put up with that kind of systemic idiocy that comes with the F2P model. The game looks great. Absolutely stunning looking, and I have hope for it. I just hope it doesn't follow the samme path so many other incredibly disappointing games have taken.

I definitely got Eve Online vibes during their announcement trailer. It sounds like the whole heartlands vs open areas lines up with how Eve Online has the "safe" sectors and then highsec, lowsec, and nullsec where players control those areas and they are much more dangerous. It will be interesting to see how this translates to a medieval themed swords and sorcery MMO. I went ahead and signed up to try to get into the Alpha, because this has the potential to be a very interesting game. As a side note, I believe that Eve Online also released a browser-based option recently, so it's not too surprising that this team that includes former CCP devs is going with a more accessible approach for playing this game. When they covered the non-pc ways to connect, they did seem refer to that as casual gaming and the lady that said she never owned a gaming PC called it her chance as a casual gamer to have her own "niche" thing to do, so it does seem like it will be a different experience when playing on a platform other than PC.

@@TheTruthWholeTruthNothingButTh Announced playtest on February 28 this year, meaning it's late alpha testing before beta release. So expect atleast 1, possibly 2 years more if all goes well. More realistic timeframe would be 3-4 years.

I don't want to be that guy, but I just don't believe our expectations will ever be met by a new MMORPG. When a new genre comes up that's definitely possible because of all the novelty involved, but not anymore for MMORPGs, in my opinion. When I say our/we I mean people whose favorite MMORPGs are games such as runescape, ragnarok, WoW classic/TBC, tibia, EQ, UO, etc., I'm talking about us, the OGs. I honestly believe that even if a game meets all of our best expectations in-game, most of us can't play as much as we could back then and we also won't *really* experience things for the first time like we did back then. I hope I'm wrong and that the 10 hours per week I have available to play games are enough to make me happy again gaming wise, but I believe that creating expectations is the best way to be disappointed.

Both excited and worried on my part. Whenever you have a game that needs to be compatible on mobile.. Oh man.. Like you I truly hope the mobile gameplay resorts to crafting. That just drops my excitement into a big worry. If you want people to play the full experience on mobile, expect a lot to be compromised to run on mobile. I expect rather simplistic combat if that's the case and that'd be a huge turn off for me. Sure, it might be decent, but it won't ever be as good as it would be without having to run it on mobile. Anyway, time will tell!

The devs really manage to convey a genuine sense of excitement about their game, which I find very charming, and the graphics is stunning (as is to be expected from an U5-game, I guess). I will definitely try to sign up for the beta of this one.

The real big gamechanger will be the dynamic simulation of semi-realistic NPC. They have the potential to create believable worlds to which we can escape to. Many MMO veterans want a world in which they can immerse themselves. The culture of MMOs is mostly speed and optimisation driven. Some games are more oriented to single-player experiences in an MMO world, but therefore lack advanced social interactions - with players as with NPCs. The integration will be a long way to go, even with the more believable social interactions with LLMs like ChatGPT. Simulations of behavior like persistent interactions, migration due to in-game situations such as economic changes or war or other threats, as well as logical initiative and quest generation are still not feasible.

I was out when I saw the wonky movement and combat animations, and when they said we want to bring it to mobile devices. Also, when the head of studio says she's never owned a gaming PC!!!!!!!!!!!!! wait WHAt? Why would I play a game from someone that's not one of us. She seems super nice and sweet though. Lovely person. What I really want is a Star Wars Galaxies 2 on the Unreal 5 engine. Every concept that made SWG great bring it to todays tech and make it better. We don't need 300 million dollar games. We just want something fun and engaging.

We all know how stunningly beautiful a well modded Skyrim can look like and we've seen what UE5 is capable of. Just aesthetics and a good engine don't make a great game though, so I hope the underlying layers of combat, gameplay, environment, AI and inter-player interactions are well taken care of.

The money they received are an investment, which means that the people that gave them the money expect to get back a lot more than what they put in. On top of that, the devs have to pay their salaries which, considering the industry they work in and the experience each person has, are going to be pretty generous. In order for the game to be profitable it has to be heavily monetized so expect this game to be pay to win, pay for convenience, pay for cosmetics with stats, pay for pets with stats, pay for vip membership to get extra stuff, pay for lootboxes that are definitely not rigged and who knows what other methods of milking the players dry these people are going to think of.

It will be nice instead of similar boring looking armors to take example from Cabal/Rohan/Silk Road Online/MU and make the armors better looking and when you enchant armors like +1 +2 +3 to increase their stats to start glowing like in Cabal or if you put some effect to have a random change on the armors so it will be cool :)

Monetization & Grind. Those are the two things that have me wary of any new mmo and we won't know anything about that until it comes out. I appreciate that this trailer doesn't hype it the game up, but we also need to wait a good long while before we can put faith in this game. Stay wary.

So, i heard it cost a lot to build a huge starship and then a war to destroy it all in EVE online, rinse and repeat for money sinks. Safe to assume it will be the same huge investment to build up the castle and then regular wars to delete them all, rinse and repeat for money sinks.

The game is really nice. It requires a lot of resources grinding just build and craft. It's great to play with friends. There are many parts of the maps that you can't build which is sad. I wish there's terraforming so you can at least create a mining area or have a freedom to elevate the floor. The combat still in the works at least

The only thing that i can say is, There will be a Mythical weapons from mythical creatures as legendary drops and is sooo very rare and expensive per piece. Then the thing that i get excited off is the MASSIVE BLOODY BRUTAL PVP that will happen outside the heartlands.. since the biomes and or gatherables are more needed in crafting.. people will be fighting for it, not mention the Creature hunts/Boss hunts that will be made by players and guilds/clans.. and The onset of Battle for each town/city after the boss fights LMAO. :D :D

This game has some potential. Beared devs with sweatshirts and having ex ppl from Eve and even from oldschool Vanilla WoW and so on. I just hope that they didn't focus too much on good gfx, music etc at the cost of poor gameplay, combat, animations and such. Not that I dislike good gfx but many times you see games today coming out with gorgeous gfx but lacking in those other things I mentioned earlier. Also need to know more about their pvp "opt-in" system. Is it gonna be a toggle like NW or specific pvp zones like in Daoc's frontier (Emain) or are you auto tagged and ganked outside town. Turning 44 this year and played mmo's since 2001 (daoc). Fingers crossed this will turn up well. They didn't beg for money, no cash shop or boosts so 👍

I keep sayin' the best part of lineage 2, which was an all-around super good MMO if you took away the crazy korean grind, was the interpersonal drama around castle ownership. Rivalry is the best content, and all the devs need to do is give people reasons to pick a side. Very excite.

That concept of a "core" safe area, surrounded by increasingly dangerous "wilderness," comes straight out of EVE Online. It's a solid choice, and it worked well, there. If this has a player-driven "faucet-drain" economy the way EVE does, I'll play this.
