You have two options in those situations - do nothing and have a dead animal or try something...if it goes well you have a live animal. If it does not go well, you have a dead animal. You have to try as you have nothing to loose. You do what you gotta do. Good job!

You are correct, Cows like those Acorns. I had one get out of the fence and was cleaning those Acorns up, fortunately she didn't eat enough before I got to her. The but is she didn't want to leave those acorns and I had a terrible time running her off and getting her back in the fence.

I lose a goat 1 year ago to bloat. Tried everything but a gas release hole. After it was all over I wish I would have tried releasing the gas like you did. Great video Josh.

My goat ate waaaaaay too many pears and then my mom gave her a bunch of watermelon for a few days without me knowing. My goat got so bloated she was like that blueberry girl on Willy wonka. I just lifted her front end straight up and she burped it out naturally. Had to do this like every couple hours for a few days. Just letting people know if your animal is small enough to just lift up, don’t go poking holes in them when you don’t have to

Drenching with vegetable oil, warm water, and baking soda also helps get rid of the foam.

Yikes. A little scary there. Must have been very gratifying to see her respond so quickly and well. We had a trocar about the size of your bigger one, but never had to use it. The animal husbandry class in Vo-Ag had a description of it one day and someone, maybe the teacher, had seen it done.

Josh I had to do the same thing with my pocket knife one time. I was way out back and Trocar was up at barn. We got him in barn and had to decompress his the second time as he tart to bloating again. We left Trocar in him for about 12 hours and did fine.

I remember as a kid my dad's friend used a water hose. He fed and guided that hose down the cow's mouth into it's stomach. My dad said the air poured out and was the most foul smelling air.

Good job man, we about lost our hole herd last fall. One field of dallas grass got infected with some type of fungus. We had to punch quite a few of ours with one of them, it saved most of them. I believe its called the dallas grass staggers.

The same thing happened to me last week with one of my sheep. Daughter accidentally fed grain the night before and we woke up to a hugely bloated ewe. We didn't have to trocar thankfully, but we're able to save her with a drench and massaging her belly and legs. She was down for 3 days but was eating hay and drinking water, then finally got up on her own. 🙏 Going to invest in the trocar though, just in case. She probably would have recovered faster, honestly.

I always seem to learn something from your videos - love that! I remember reading about the bloat in a heard of sheep that ate clover in a high school network book "Far from the Madding Crowd" by Thomas Hardy. It was extraordinary and disturbing to imagine. So sorry you lost a cow so as to learn how to save this one. So happy to see her up and about and doing well. Thank you for your informative videos and I pray that many will learn from them.

Strange as it may seem I was watching Yellowstone on Netflix last night and they had an episode where some not so nice people dropped green clover into the paddock and gave all the stock bloat. They managed to save one by sticking a long blade knife into it's side much like Josh did and it survived.

Interesting. Im an ex FMF Corpsman (paramedic) and have have a fair share of lung-taps under the belt. Guess its the same principle so good to know! The torn instead of sliceed being preferable is odd. See, field trauma surgery is a lot easier when things are sliced off. Yeah you might have to dig around a little but things tend to seal themselves off a lot more. Torn or ripped lead quite a headache because.. Well.. I don't want the heros of the ...... world to chime in with bad advice but lets just say it meant a horrible outcome for the person.. But we are dainty compared to the cows. Is this why it doesn't matter as much?

Uncle was doing do maintenance on equipment that requires grease had a 5 gallon bucket for filling grease gun (in 60s ) old Way of having to do it anyway bucket was open unattended and a cow 🐄 was eating it head in bucket 🪣 it didn't get sick that i am aware of

I worked on a farm when I was in high school. One of the yearlings got over in the alphalfa field and bloated like this. We had to do the same thing. Used the farmers pocket knife. Sterilized (kind of) the smallest blade with a cigarette lighter. Nasty smelling mess LOL Sprayed a little purple stuff on the incision. Cow was fine in less than a minute.
