Fantastic song! It's one of my favorites by them. The bluesy opening, the guitars in harmony, excellent drumming, spot on lyrics. That "meanwhile the mice endure the wheel" line gets me every time. To me it's about just existing. Just shuffling through every day: work, school, bills, responsibilities, sleep. When I'm overwhelmed, when nothing is wrong but everything *feels* wrong, I BLAST this and scream along. Other A7x suggestions: Beast and the Harlot (full album version or Live at the LBC), The Stage, Afterlife (full album version for the Gates' solos), Bat Country, Nightmare, Welcome to the Family, Shepherd of Fire, God Hates Us, Trashed and Scattered (that's my angry song. KILLER bass line!). Lots of great songs from them. Dig in!

Fun story, I spent a year seeing Avenged every chance I could get. I caught them at a Wisconsin festival in the northwoods where the crowd was not their demographic. Think Jon Bon Jovi fans, the crowd was in lawn chairs. Security kicked anyone who tried to mosh out right away. So Avenged ended with "A Little Piece of Heaven" as a bit of a fuck you and myself and about ten other hardcore fans damn near died of happiness while the crowd packed up their chairs and fucked right off to their campers. Incidentally I broke my leg moshing at another of their shows the year prior. No regrets.

So I've done research on this song when I first heard it a couple years back, the lyrics to me personally mean that yes, it's a song about depression, and being "buried Alive" is not only the responsibilities but also the pressure of keeping everything inside to yourself and never telling anyone or letting off steam in a healthy way that you just let it pile up on top of each other which causes you to feel like you can't get out of the reoccurring cycle of depression and being lonely, it's a suicide prevention song about accepting your past and accepting help when you need it, and the heavier part about it is all about how you'll end up driving yourself to insanity if you don't do so

Nightmare was the last album that the Rev wrote drums for, some of these songs were about depression from losing his (M Shadows) uncle but after the Rev died, many of these became more aimed at the depression from losing him, a major part of their family and sound. Nightmare, especially the official video show a lot of nods. Interesting fact too, the Rev wrote most of these drum riffs but died before recording so Mike Portnoy formerly with Dream Theater came in to fill in for the album and lay down the drum tracks because he admired the Rev so more. This is one of my fave albums of theirs. After this album, Hail to the King, The Stage, Coming Home, and This Means War are some of my faves. Off that album you HAVE to check out Nightmare. Of their older stuff Beast and the Harlot, Victim, Afterlife, and Almost Easy are great. One I personally like because of just how many layers and changes it has is Sidewinder. It is really heavy in parts though.. but it also brings in a lot of that latin influence the Rev loved and it still amazes me at how 2 such different riffs can go into that one song.

The first time that I heard this song was at one of their concerts in 2017, Volbeat co-headlined. When it got to head banging part, I was hooked. I asked my buddy what song it was, he told me. I googled the song as soon as it ended and bought the album and downloaded it as soon as we all got back to the limo. On a side note, I was supposed to see the twice that week. In Hershey, where this took place, and 2 nights later at the Linc in Philly at the Metallica show. They couldn't play that night because Syn's wife was giving birth prematurely. But, I caught Volbeat at both shows. James wasn't even mad. He said that Synister Gates had to got welcome a brand new metal head into the world. I just wish they would've asked Volbeat to do a full set instead of having a turntablist. Yeah. A fucking turntablist. How do you think that went over at a metal show? My son and I chose that time to head inside and grab dinner. But, we could here the boos! It's Philly. Nobody can boo like us when we're pissed. Imagine being a metal band that has to go on between Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Yeah, that wouldn't go over either. Peace, love and all that. But, we payed to see a metal show! Of course Metallica saved the night. With help from Volbeat

We all need to stop and smell the roses. Enjoy the journey you're on, and stop focusing solely on the destination. You'll spend most of your life "getting there," and only ephemeral moments enjoying any particular endpoint.

The nightmare album is very unique. They recorded the music with their long time best friend and original drummer the rev. A7X always writes the lyrics after they do the music. The rev always has a big role to play in writing the lyrics. Unfortunately they lost him before they started to write the actual lyrics. So this album is mostly about his death. A good song to listen to from this album is Victim that encapsulated the mood of the band perfectly through the process. It’s funny you mention depression because depression wrote the lyrics to this entire album. This album also came out the summer my grandmother passed away. It was amazing timing for me. It really sought me through a very low time in my life. Also it’s quite amazing to know the rev wrote the music with the band and the lyrics to the very songs he helped create were entirely dedicated to him. Love this album love this band. My favorite band of all time.
