I've been a Maiden fan since 1983. Piece of Mind, so Bruce Dickinson was the voice I heard first. But shortly thereafter I heard the Killers album. Wow, what is this? Paul Di'Anno? Hmmmm. Good stuff. And while I went on to love Number of the Beast and Powerslave, I was much more interested in what I heard on Killers and the first Maiden album, Iron Maiden. I felt the songs had much more depth, took you on a more interesting journey, and Di'Anno's voice had a lot to do with that! 40-odd years later, I still like Di'Anno better. And...I recommend you listen to Maiden's one live album with Di'Anno called, Maiden Japan. Di'Anno kills it!!!

I have a special connection to the first two albums with Di'Anno. I love Maiden a lot, all of their 80s albums are fire, but i always come back to those first two records. Maybe really because they felt different. You have these beautiful balladesque songs next to almost punk energy stuff like Charlotte the Harlot, their first progressive song Phantom of the Opera or epic metal songs like Killers or Murders in the Rue Morgue. And Paul always killed it. He was so important to these albums and these albums were important as the foundation of one of the greatest bands in rock history. May Paul rest in peace. I'm sure we will never forget him and always cherish the work he put into those early albums.

Althoug Di'anno's time with Maiden was short his impact was massive! It was almost like 2 completely different bands, the first 2 records were more raw, agressive, and had those punk roots. I loved everything this band did in the 80's with both singers. The 90's were their weakest era by far, Brave New World was a great comeback album too. Since around 2000 it's been hit or miss, they always manage to put out 2-4 songs on every record that are just amazing, they still have a lot of magic 44 years later!

Paul Di Anno vocals, Clive Burr drums, Steve Harris bass, Dave Murray lead guitar, Dennis Stratton dual lead guitar. The line up for the first album and in my opinion the very best. I saw them live when they were paying their dues at a dive called Middlesbrough Rock Garden and even then I knew the band were marked for greatness. They like many other start out bands on the Heavy Metal circuit loved to play the Rock Garden. When they released Killers, the band had moved onto medium-size venues, losing none of their rawness and that get up on stage and just belt it out. By then Eddie had evolved into a full grown character and was part of the stage set.

These two tracks showed Paul's range and ability as a crooner - first track I heard him on was Prowler and my jaw hit the floor as a 13 year old kid way back in 1995 - this was after first buying NPFTD, NOTB, FOTD and Live after Death, as well as the X-Factor. The difference between these tracks and that irrepressible snarl show just how versatile he was. Reputation as a one-trick pony was so undeserved, and he was such a humble guy too. Had the pleasure of meeting him at Hard Rock Hell around 15 years ago. You hit the nail right on the head too. Taken alone, the lyrics to Strange World are completely meaningless compared to, say 2 Minutes to Midnight, Paschendale, etc. but the vibe it exudes is why it's my all time favourite song. It's also a brilliant way to get a new girlfriend into Maiden hehe - this, then Wasted Years, and go from there. Glad you discovered this too friend :)

I was fortunate to see his band in 86. One of the concerts that you never forget.
