Vela Azul’s position behind the wall of horses is next to hopeless, but the long and wide Tokyo stretch run, Vela Azul’s explosive burst of speed, and Ryan Moore’s magic in weaving through traffic. Amazing win. Kind of disappointed in Yuga Kawada, placed Danon Beluga just behind the leaders where the pack is tight, causing him to make wide turns, while Shahryar is placed behind Beluga where there aren’t many runners inside of him then got startled by Mirco Demuro and Uberleben, causing him to make his spurt much earlier than he should.

One of the better rides I've seen by Ryan Moore in an international G1 of this magnitude in a long time. And how about the winner Vela Azul, who looked an average at best horse in 16 races on dirt to begin his career, winning only 2 of 16. With connections deciding on a surface switch back in March, Vela Azul in 6 starts to date now on turf has won 4 of 6 finishing 3rd in the other two, including having won the G2 Kyoto Daishoten in October and now the prestigious G1 Japan Cup.

Horse racing is much better when ALL the jockeys are riding to win. Unlike in the United States, where the 'jockey worship' happens. That is why U.S. jockeys are no match for the European jockeys. The so called 'best jockey in the U S (Irad Ortiz) would not win more than a handful of races if he rode in Europe for the entire year. Yet the European jockeys come to the U S and have success.

Really shocked no one is giving credit to Vela Azul the horse was ridden in a corner and fought back like a true champion. He is now 4-0-2-0 in turf races makes you wonder what he could have done if he started earlier in turf.
