Sawine is a very traditional dish in my family. As a child, every Eid we would wake up to the smell of sawine filling up the house as my mother would be preparing this recipe for breakfast before we head out to Eid prayers.
In Trinidad & Tobago, Sawine is our version of Boeber which is made by the Cape Malays of South Africa. Boeber is a "sweet, milk drink, made with vermicelli, sago, sugar, and flavoured with cardamom, stick cinnamon, and rose water. The drink is traditionally served on the 15th night of Ramadan to celebrate the middle of the fast, for those who have completed the first 15 days of fasting." - Wikipedia
Bieber has origins in Malaysia as it is related to buber lambuk which translates into "special porridge".
Every family has their own special way of preparing sawine. This is a remix of my mother's recipe using almond milk instead of dairy.
