This is the incredible story of Dr. Melissa Freeman. At 94 years-of-age, Dr. Freeman is celebrating 65 years as practicing doctor in New York City, having entered the medical field when not only was it very difficult for women to become doctors, but extremely hard for African American women.
But what makes Dr. Freeman's story even more remarkable is that she is the granddaughter of a slave. Her grandfather Albert worked the fields of Virginia right up until the emancipation proclamation was signed in 1863.
Today, she continues to work at her private practice in Harlem, seeing patients day after day, sometimes working until midnight.
Colm Flynn travelled to New York to meet the amazing Dr. Freeman and hear her story.
