This only reduces costs if the workers do not get paid properly. In most places around the world this repair would cost more than a new high quality rim.

@PekkaKilpelainen true, but I'm impressed with their ability to recreate the proper hub for this. The welding has to be good or it would not be so hard to machine the center out

The holes were indexed and punched true to the bore which was right because it makes the bore a good reference surface. Then they take another cut on the bore which was true to the bolt holes but now no longer. Now they have created a wobbly bore which is out of true to the bolt hole circle. The rim in the lathe should be cut to fit the rim face, not the other way around.

I love to see stick welding being used so much! It's what I learned first and I always come back to it. We really are spoiled with MIG and TIG. When it comes to big welds on heavy steel it's really hard to argue with what you can do with just a stick!

Lacks precision? Maybe so, but an out of round wheel will have the same effect as a rough road. Probably what this wheel will spend its life on. So, great job! Turned scrap into something useful. I do a lot of tig and machining, this video is a good reminder to adjust standards to what is really needed for the job. Stick welding always strikes me as crude, but it's really not.. the welder here and the rod (6011, 6013...??) seemed tolerant of the not so clean metal. It looked pretty good from here. I notice a lot of 2 piece rims on shipping container trailers running around here on i-78 that don't run true at all..what was made here looks at least that good.

When I see that stack of plates to make wheel rims I can't help but think, are that many wheel rims failing? Then watching this video I can see why. No heat treating, making rims from pieces welded together, too many holes on the sides sapping strength, and probably no proper balancing. It's no wonder they fail so often when I see them cold pressed into shape, and then no follow-up heat treating. But alas, that's life in these challenging situations and for them, life goes on.................

I am stunned to see what damage wheel rims sustain in Pakistan (or wherever) and the methods of repair applied. Remind me to never go to Pakistan (or wherever) and certainly never to get on a bus there. By the way, what chances that the red-orange paint being painted on the rim towards the end feature lead on the list of ingredient? (Probably nil: it would be too expensive...)

A few issues: (1) Steel from a scrapped ship can be of variable quality. If it's from an area of high strain, the steel may be substaintially weaker than expected. (2) The guy punching the big holes doesn't seem to be using a template or guide. So the holes may be misspaced and the wheel will be a bit unbalalnced. (3) The lathe cutting tools are not ground properly to break off the chips.
