I am relieved I won't have the itch to buy a new Kindle. My first Kindle lasted me over 10 years and really my current Paperwhite 2021 should be good for many more years. The colors just don't seem necessary for someone who just reads books with text. If they had tossed in some physical page turning buttons, that would have been another story.

I was holding on to my first gen Oasis for that reason. This summer, I gave up waiting for Amazon and got myself a Kobo Libra Colour. I absolutely love it. It didn't take me long to figure out how to move my Kindle library over. Bottom line being, if Amazon won't give you the hardware form factor you want, there are alternatives you can look into. Removing the digital restrictions from Kindle purchases is trivial these days (and I discovered almost all of my recent purchases didn't even have any), so you're not even giving up your library or ability to purchase new books from Amazon.

This is basic reporting. New products are introduced: Here's a rundown of specs and features. As was stated, it's a first look, not necessarily a hands-on. What I'd like to see is a report on why Amazon's design is so poor. The new Paperwhite is slightly larger due to a smaller bezel? OK. It's still waterproof. OK. Page turning is faster ... from stodgy to less stodgy. Ok. Where are the UI enhancements? Perhaps an edition with real buttons that people seem want. Are libraries any easier to organize? How about actually being able to easily use annotations and highlights one makes in note-taking apps? Let's see a story on how people actually read books, how they use e-readers like a Kindle or Scribe or the other models and offerings from competitors and how these devices ultimately miss the mark except for the most basic book-readers -- people who read books, not the devices themselves. The first-look report is helpful -- I hope CNET will look a little closer once all the models are available because at first glance these seem underwhelming (except for maybe the muted color edition).

I like the new color on the basic Kindle, and that the bezel matches the back is a great touch. That's something I'd like to see them do with the Fire tablets. A few generations ago, they had a white Fire with white bezels. But nothing like it since.

Colorsoft is $130 bucks more than the Kobo clara colour. Unless they have a dramatically better color ink display I don't see how they can justify such an aggressive price. I'll need to see side by side comparisons. But most likely I'm going with Kobo again.

I’m really excited for the color soft and have been waiting for this for a long while. However I think I’ll wait until the second iteration of it before I buy it so I’ll see the improved version when it cokes out and make a decision then. My signature edition is in amazing shape now so I don’t see a need to upgrade at this point.

bought the 2021 Signature Ed for me and my bff this year so don't need to upgrade. It's a great little device but it's nice to see that they're upgrading the series. I wish the kindle was faster and more responsive (which would have warranted something of an upgrade, at least for me) but it is what is. The Colorsoft seems nice but not for $280.

@@PenNBrushYou might be able to answer this as an owner… I have a number of recipe books on Kindle and being able to write on them would seem to be a good use for the Scribe (if it actually allowed me to do it) - how would you work around this limitation with the software as it is? Can you link to a note or something? Not being able to directly make my own tweaks seems like a big miss for quite an expensive device

@@MattSwain1 with the new features you’ll be able to add comments inline and in a margin. I prefer that method since it allows users to keep advantage of the e-book fonts settings, also keeping it clean and consistent across devices. For the rare times I need to write directly on a page (crosswords and such) I import them as pdfs. With the current software you can highlight sentences or add a note anywhere in the page. When you tap on either the note icon or a highlighted sentence it will open a note window either on top or at the bottom of the screen(depending if the note was inserted in the top half or the bottom half)

Kobo Color still has physical page turning buttons, Amazon dropped the ball with much reduced battery life vs. Paperwhite + no physical buttons. The pricing is also quite high at $300 after tax for the Kindle Colorsoft. I would love the Kobo Color if it had the Amazon book store ecosystem.

@@tsunghan_yu technically yes, but you can usually get the same books other than the Amazon published ebooks. If you're willing to set it up, you can get Calibre on your computer to manage ebooks that Amazon "locks" into their ecosystem (you have to undo the DRM on their ebooks) so that you can then get it onto a Kobo/other e-readers.

I mainly use my Kindle Scribe for note taking and reading documents that require graphics such as textbooks and PPTs in PDF format so will just stay with my paper white and scribe for now

I waited and waited to buy a new device anticipating a color and/or new oasis. With little to no information at all regarding new devices on the horizon I finally looked into alternatives and went with Kobo. I have been very impressed and after seeing these new options, am very glad with my choice. Mostly with the Kobo experience overall, but it is also pretty glaring that they STILL have left the Oasis series ignored.

I can't say enough good things about my scribe. I love writing with it, and it has made all my notes being in one place so, so convenient. Not sure I will be buying the gen2 to replace my gen1 quite yet, but I'm happy they are continuing the line so I don't have to worry about it being a weird one-off product that will brick in a couple years without guidance and development.

Even thinner bezels for the paperwhite is honestly kind of a drawback for me. Ive useda 7. and 10 gen paperwhite before and found the old one to be much easier to hold due to the thicker bezels and recessed display.

cool, glad my old scribe will get updates. TBH I was a little disappointed with the new scribe having a white border, and also having part of it a different color on the "handle" part. Seems jarring to me. The pen also looks like a big marker. I think I'm good with my current Scribe, its still pretty great, and basically feels brand new still.

Please be warned that the advertised "3 months of battery" means around 45h of active reading, hence one week for a person who habitually reads a lot and is pretty fast (hence turnes more pages per minute), probably a couple days if extensively used to read manga in high quality cbz files.

I have the most recent Kindle Paper White. The black plastic enclosure feels nice to the touch but is a big fingerprint magnet. I wouldn't mind that so much if you could easily get rid of the fingerprints (e.g., as I can do with Apple Keyboard Case for my iPad), but I never seem to be able to get it clean. I'd be interested to see if this has been improved.

Scribe needs upgraded enterprise software. Make it easier to hand write notes during meetings and convert to text and organize with enterprise files. The colorsoft looks nice but at that price, a larger screen would have been better since the color resolution is only 150ppi.

I'm happy with Kobo Libra Color. My only reason to switch to Colorsoft is that it has a really, really improved color technology than what we have now. I'm also a bit disappointed they didn't add layers to the Scribe.

I'm sooo happy🎉 I was eyeing other color e-readers but im committed to Amazon ecosystem as a Prime member and kindle unlimited member as well. I know other brands may be ahead but I feel comfortable in Amazon. After rumors I felt maybe they may discontinue kindle or maybe a color one eay ahead on the horizon but this surprise drop! The rummors of the patents or permits or whatever were true. I love my oasis but the mini usb conection and no wireless charging was bothering me. It is still one of the best due to size and design. I would give anything to have a Kindle color in the smaller size Question: does the new version in the smaller size have the “warm light” option that the paper white has?? That’s one of the downsides of the current regular kindle.
