Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power season 2 finale is approaching as the media is desperately trying to come up with reasons why you should watch the series. At the same time as other journalists are doing in depth jewellery reviews, no seriously. In this last video before the last episode releases it's time to look at the finale advertising and the fallout of that disastrous episode 7 episode. Was it controversial deliberately, and was there a better mirdania ending filmed? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

True. But TBH I would have loved him and Legolas just doing some weird side-quest away from the main action. If my memory serves, Aragorn would have been in his 20s or early 30s at the time? Canonically there’s no evidence he and Legolas knew each other, but canonically he also served abroad in lots of different human kingdoms, under pseudonyms, so he conceivably could have done the same in Mirkwood. And “fanon” loves to expand on the movie scene in the Council of Elrond because it implies they do actually know each other. And let’s be honest, what I’m suggesting would be less dumb than 95% of what they decided to do in those movies… Viggo personified Aragorn, tho, so I can feel his “disappointment face” in me from here…

In fairness to them, Tolkien did kinda regret not giving the orcs better scenes showing them as people too. At the same time if I recall right Tolkien described Orcs as the most logical species in Middle Earth, being ruthlessly utilitarian in their thinking, which makes me wonder if Amazon realized that begs the question "why did they burn all the stuff about forging better weapons and objects without a second thought?" Like, the correct response for the orcs when Elrond was begging for the works to be spared would have been for at least one of them to go up, threateningly, and ask him what use the orcs would have for that. That leads into a character dilemma for Elrond, give the Orcs better forging skills to make armor that might make them a nigh unstoppable fighting force, or let those works that he finds priceless burn. (Of course, Amazon doesn't think in those terms, so they just wanted a random act of cruelty.)

Saying that random elf archer emulated Boromir's last stand is another example of how these people do not understand the characters in the original LOTR story. Boromir sacrificed himself not just as an act of bravery, but as an attempt at redemption because he had behaved so darkly towards the hobbits, since he had previously coveted The One Ring so much that it completely clouded his judgement towards evil. The showrunners just see 'person pierced with several arrows' and think OMG she's just like Boromir! I mean, Boromir wasn't even trying to make some difficult shot with a bow as he fought to the last?
Ай бұрын
Exactly, Boromir basically did what this warhammer 40K quote says the guard do best: "To each of us falls a task, and all the Emperor requires of us Guardsmen is that we stand the line, and we die fighting. It is what we do best: We die standing."
@MemoristCed
@MemoristCed Ай бұрын
Boromir's last stand is a cinematic masterpiece, too. He inspires and emboldens Merry and Pippin to take up arms themselves. Hit with the second arrow, he turns to see the hobbits who need him, and finds another wellspring of strength he never even realized he had, because he MUST. He fights until his body will no longer answer his spirit. And even as he trembles in his last agonies, he lives long enough to inspire Aragorn, and find peace. The captain of Gondor showed his quality: the very highest.

Season 2 far eclipses the shit show that was season one and attempts to fix a lot of broken things. The storyline is also sped up for obvious continuation reasons. Do not agree with all the hate season 2 has got and I’m someone who detested season 1. Think people need to come into the show with no expectations and realising they are doing the best with what they have. Casting, set design etc is actually far better than the majority of trash that comes out these days. People jump on the bandwagon of hate without even trying to watch the show and it really shows. Not defending it simply saying that it really isn’t as bad as the gimps who hate shows without even watching them. E.g ign giving the new penguin series 5/10

In fairness, her being shown as a warrior isn't bad, but the real missed opportunity of the series is the mere fact one of the main perspectives is about elves, yet everything happens so fast. This series by rights should spread out these events over decades, showing the non elves in the background doing great things but then withering of old age, while the elves remain eternal. It should show Sauron's manipulations not in weeks, but over the span of decades. Heck, Elrond should really care more about his brother's descendants, and have correspondences with the kings of Numenor that slowly dry up as the kings' lifespans get shorter over the age. This was a chance to tell an epic. Instead they made slop.

Or bland guy to play a charismatic Devil in disguise? Or should the old actor play the young squire? Or... Or... There could be hundreds of examples. Yes, maybe you will "make one personal dream come true", but destroy the big, collective one. Nowadays fantasy is so inclusive that bland and now stills from different films and franchises are no different. Total "diversity" has led to impoverishment, loss of individuality and creative spark. People simply consume some substance made and approved by a committee. This is reminiscent of Soviet censorship, only in the USSR creators tried to circumvent party censorship, not enforce it, like champagne socialists from Hollywood.

@@cgrado, I'm not talking about the color of people so much as I'm talking about emotional blackmail. The creators always try to asheme and gaslight the viewers in order to try less and not answer uncomfortable questions. It would be strange to avoid an entire group of people, but it would also be very strange to have to always have it on screen. I mean, the world is full of children, but not every film has to have them. Same goes to real peoples or nationalities... Or their fantasy analogues. In my opinion, Star Wars got worse when they added space buddist monk to Rebel One. If people remembered this character, it would actually be floodgate. After it, almost any nationality would begin to demand that its analogue be added to SW. Then the distant galaxy would turn into our boring Earth.

Except its a lie. They were not Tolkein fans and they did not dream of being part of it since childhood. They are woke Hollywood activists who will take whatever job they can get and inject their politics into it. A real Tolkein fan would care more about preserving and promoting the work than self-inserting themselves where they don't belong. I'm a huge fan of Akira Kurasawa's work. I mean, that's just it. They're not appealing to Tolkien fans. They're appealing to modern audiences. That's the key difference. They're appeasing the activist mob that's perpetually on twitter talking about the next great offense and sycophantically obsessed with superficiality, sexuality, and utter shallowness. The audience they've cultivated likely hasn't even read a book since High School...if they're even out of HS. This audience isn't even Peter Jackson's LOTR fans. They're the people that think both Tolkien and Jackson are racists and sexists. They're the people who preach about cultural appropriation...but think it's fine to appropriate something intended to be British mythology and inspired by very real Euro-centric cultures. They're the people who don't care about a script so long as it's got a checklist of diversity quotas. ROP is your average Twitter poster. And here's the rub. They've learned the hard way...there's not that many insufferable Twitter activists that ALSO have a vague interest in fantasy. The only thing I'll be watching...is the rating drop further and further.

The funny thing is, they call Tolkien a sexist, but let's look at what they did to their own female characters: - Tolkien's Galadriel is gracious, loved by all (except the evil), so wise Sauron couldn't fool her, and powerful enough to level cities solo. RoP's Galadriel is abrasive, viewed as a nuisance by all, ruled by her ovaries, and her power extends no farther than the point of her sword. - Bronwyn dies of medical malpractice. They straight-up fridged her so Arondir could have a motivation in this season. Same with the jewelsmith, just had her seduced and then die for drama. - They blinded Tar-Miriel, had Pharazon just take the throne from her as easy as ordering from Prime, and made her a weepy helpless wretch. - Disa went from a charming but devious woman (I actually liked her) to an aimless meddler who needs her husband to back her up. She had the most potential and they squandered it. - Earien turned on her remaining family and the other elf-friends for no discernable reason I can figure out. If this is feminism, give me the patriarchy of the WW1 generation; I might have a chance at interesting female characters.

I actually saw a video by Critical Drinker that pointed out how stupid the battle of the Fall of Eregion was. And he brilliantly pointed out how & why it's a cheap rip-off of Boromir's death and ends up meaning absolutely nothing where you simply have total apathy. (Boromir is one of my favorite characters - that whole scene had me ranting quite a bit at the laptop screen. And I only see it through Disparu's reviews). Johnny Law's video is where I discovered the whole 'death metal' end credits song existed. Is it a cool sounding song? Yes. Does it belong anywhere near Tolkien and his creation? DEFINITELY NOT. It's one thing for hard rock/metal artists & songs to be inspired from Tolkien - very different to insert scream metal as a 'Isn't this modern & fun?' travesty.

I have seen the finale and it shreds lore and Tolkien's intricate legendarium with a gusto greater than anything seen before: the Balrog awakens and kills Durin III, Gandalf gets betrayed by Saruman, Nenya changes Adar back into a full Elf pristine, healed and untainted, the Orcs magically obey Sauron and kill Adar, the Faithful are all declared traitors by Pharazon and the King's Men and all get rounded up, Sauron pinches the nine of rings of Men after duelling Galadriel, and we find it was Tom Bombadil who made Gandalf discover his purpose and remember the instructions of the Valar. And even the Peter Jackson films are insulted too as a healed Galadriel awakens in Rivendell as the Elves enter the valley for the first time- she is dressed in white and there is a bandage across her shoulder. Just like Frodo waking up in Rivendell in the Fellowship of the Ring. But hey! Sauron utterly defeats Galadriel. And in the last scene Gilga-daddy stands on top of a cliff with sword drawn to the cheers of the Elves. I could almost have sworn the Elves were shouting Gilga-daddy...

Here's the difference between the Twink Elrond and Guyladriel kiss and the Leia and Luke kiss. In the Canon, it wasn't decided that Luke and Leia were siblings. They were literally making it up as they went. They are on record stating that even the whole "I am your father" bit was decided last minute as Lucas, who made the series, wanted the twist to be that Obi-Wan killed Luke's father. We can look in retrospect and see this as weird even though Luke didn't know and Leia claimed to have had a hunch. But this is because, again, they made it up as they went. This is not the same. The relationship between the characters has been established for decades and even if Elrond wasn't her son in law at the time (because they fucked the timeline) it still would have been extremely weird.

i think this series really points to a problem with copyright law. JRR and Christopher are gone now, and they were the only ones with any sort of claim on this world. But because copyright lasts so long, Amazon can make this drivel but driven fans can't make their own works. Yeah most would be crap, but you'd get a few good ones, and even the bad ones would generally be better than whatever this is. And at the very least that fan project to re-cobble together a better Silmarillion from JRR's writings could be released.

Absolutely, I agree completely. The time for copyright protection is ridiculous, there's no need for such long terms. Witness what happened with Conan... copyright ended recently and now there are novels, board games, and other items being released, some of which are quite good.

@@uvicjames Tolkien is a nice edge case actually. The last of his significant narrative writings were only published in 2021, but that's less than 50 years after his death. I think this shows life + 50 is more than adequate. Heck they probably would have been published earlier had their been a looming deadline. Rolling back the Mickey Mouse Protection Act would then be a good, easy first step. I personally think given the increasing lifespan of people that we need to go with a fixed term for published works (whether work for hire or not) and life+ only for non-work-for-hire, unpublished-in-their-lifetime works. Also we need a renewal requirement for work-for-hire works. It works for patents. Yeah we'd have to renegotiate a lot of copyright treaties, but renegotiating treaties is a thing we can do.

"The staff chooses the wizard, Harry. I mean, Grand Elf. I mean Gan...dalf?" Fore the record, Gandalf means "staff-elf" or "staff-man" - given that he didn't have a staff for the entire season, the idea that his name came from the similar sounding "grand elf" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. The finale was bar none the worst episode from a writing standpoint, with disjointed scenes that start with things that happened off-screen. Every character was perfectly in the place where the plot happens. The dialogue is like bad poetry, which is worse than just saying what you mean. If you watch the show, think of it as written by middle-schoolers, and then it's just funny. The reason this is not a dig on middle-schoolers is that we expect fully developed adults who have the capacity to call themselves professional writers, with a billion dollar budget, to churn out something even remotely decent. This show fails because it should be better, is too self-serious, and destroys the lore which is quintessence to using an IP. It is shallow. This isn't an adaption with minor tweaks. It's a bastardization, through and through. A shill company buying up an IP and absolutely taking a Morgoth-sized dump on it. A cheap sounding, self-indulgent void, a Zach Snyder Re-telling of Lord of the Rings. This show should make like Sauron and not return.

I have no clue what he meant. Maybe about differing elf cultures having different fighting styles, but... Knowing these people and their infinite entitlement and obsession to race and identity, I think the guy just shot himself in the foot. Probably has a fetish for it.

Talk to 100 western black people. 99 of them are complete ass mega racists that get everything for free, yet still complain and have no morals. Sadly.

I’m so glad yall are doing the lords work and watching this for us because seriously, I would hate for this to have any impact on my love for Lord of The Rings, so this way I get to hate watch it with you but also pretend it doesn’t exist in cannon :)

It doesn't exist in canon. This is a bad fanfiction that should have been quarantined in AO3.

@@MemoristCed meant more the cannon in my head not being tainted by a bad product if that makes sense.

They watched the Rankin-Bass Return of the King, where Frodo dreams of a time where even the Orcs were peaceful and friendly. There, it was a moving moment, as Frodo was trying to fight off the despair of his situation. Of course RoP managed to eff that up and make it something preachy and annoying.

I like that the Elrond actor said the kiss was stupid. He may look like a prat, but the actor seems like one of the few smart people in the cast.

I like how every time you show the kiss scene your mouse cursor circles their hands to point out the orc can see Elrond passing the pin to Galadriel.

He's still part of them with most pitch meetings showing an article at the end. Remember, he may be a talented comedic writer, but he's also Canadian and a KZbinr. Unfortunately that combination often leads to liberal views that he is only just going to be breaking away from over the next decade or so as his child grows up (caring about his child will inevitably put him at odds with Trudeau).
