The flying cam is actually a pretty cool idea if you want to surveil your whole house without needing to buy a camera for each room. Too bad I have zero trust in Ring's cyber security.

Siminoff should make a statement to his customers that Ring will stop sharing private customer data with law enforcement without a warrant. As this has been a known concern for years it is kinda strange that Verge forgot about that...

This camera maybe useful for showing a home for sale remotely, but then again, it's capability may be for indoor use only if we are going to use it like that because the buyer would like to see the exterior as well that would require a separate drone to do that. Secondly, an intruder may spot the drone before it does, and simply disable it in some way. Waste of money, I would say.

Certainly the layout of my house is already public for anyone who can be bother to consult planning or property sale records, so I don’t really see that as a big deal at all.

I bet you could do that with a Pi drone. Keeping it charged would be a thing. Make it loop around til it got low and then come back for a recharge but that would be only occasional patrols and not constant.

This idea came to me because I was out of town and a bad storm rolled through so I wanted to look around my house to see if any trees or fences had been knocked down. The other problem I couldn’t figure out was how to store it outside so it can fly around on command, but not get messed up by the elements.

There is already a company that has this and the drone takes off from an outdoor enclosure. Used for farm surveillance etc. It's a few thousand us dollars if I'm not mistaken.

I seriously tried to invent something like this for stores a long time ago. The concept is that you walk into a large store like a Supermarket, Home Depot or Best Buy, then ask the drone what you are looking for. It would direct you to the item. It would also let you know if it is in stock, the price, and show you similar items. Unfortunately, it was too expensive to pull off. LIDAR was still in it's infancy.

Is kind cool if ya can set it to take off in predetermined times and fly by around the house (outside) like a guard on patrol (set virtual fence n only in gps locations) no need to put/install bunch of cams around the entire house perimeter and link it with motion sensor which trigger on the drone warning message, like: “ya are being recorded, stay away of the property”. I have a cam on my porch with tracking motion and it is more intimidating when ya walking with that thing following your steps, it’s like someone on live watching you.

It still boggles my mind that people have comprehensive home surveillance watching their own house, even when they’re in (when you see some “hilarious” happening that their camera recorded showing up on TikTok etc). When you just know it’s entirely possible it’s being sent and stored elsewhere where anyone now or in future can access or hack access to that footage. No privacy and they invite that into their home. I just don’t get it.
