The fact that it was never automated to begin with and just low paid overseas workers feels so realistic it hurts
@breauseph9 ай бұрын
It was actually automated. Amazon clarified that the workers in India were basically moderators and AI trainers who reviewed the footage to make sure the transactions were accurate. They discontinued its use because they couldn't get the error rate down - they wanted it to require review 50 out of 1000 times but they were stuck at 700/1000. So TL;DR it was AI but apparently not very good AI.

I mean culturally we used to speculate that the future would or could be robots we were like “oh no what if the robots gain sentience, that’ll be slavery what a moral quandary ,” and we did all that speculative mind-fapping for nothing because it turns out the answer to those questions in reality is a pyramid scheme that pretty much ends in slavery…we can’t solve slavery as an answer to maintaining “ civilization”I mean we probably could if we actually committed to trying it, but humankind can’t seem to do that and we don’t even have real robots to show for it. Which is just darkly absurd and borderline funny because of all the scams to project this image of futurism that’s overly nostalgic and passé. We were the unfeeling machines all along 😂

Jarvis is correct, the original idea was the Indian workers would be temporary to help train the algorithm, but the thing about current "AI" models is no one has figured out how to get them stop hallucinating data. It might not even be possible. So Amazon realized they were never going to get past the "training" stage and actually have the AI take over because the AI was never going to be reliable enough to justify the cost of all the cameras and servers and everything to do the job of a minimum wage employee.
@DrunkenHotei3 ай бұрын
Almost every statement thus far by the public and experts alike of the form "AI will always be limited by X" has been proven wrong, so continuing to push the goalposts in this way is a bit of cope. Maybe they won't replace Indian employees anytime soon, but that doesn't mean they aren't capable of overcoming these major limitations and gaining the power to cause us serious harm. Watch some of Rob Miles' channel for an expert perspective on the matter; his latest video is very insightful.

@@DrunkenHotei I mean, not to sound like a cop-out but kind of all of it? AI being limited *has not* been proven wrong, and nobody here is pushing a goalpost nor coping. But the possibly unnecessary use of buzzwords is a red flag for sounding correct without requiring an actual argument. Also if they *were* capable of overcoming these major limitations they would have by now. So far it doesn’t seem like that will happen anytime soon. And finally, the scare tactic at the end of “Gaining power to cause us serious harm” to fearmonger and emotionally manipulate people into consuming content that pretends to be a solution but instead is specifically geared toward more fearmongering and panic-stirring. Your comment was basically a field of red flags, and if Rob Miles’ endorses or supports such manipulative tactics to funnel people to his channel then my take is he isn’t a good dude, and based on the subject matter being AI taking over he sounds like he’s a channel for conspiracies.

Oooh I know!! The reason brand names for prescription meds are so weird is bc of marketing and trademark legislation. You can’t name your new drug “miraclepill” or anything that contains a marketing claim within the name, and you also can’t name it anything that has an anagram that could be considered a marketing claim. Typically the FDA generates a list of potential options for a brand name and then the corporation can either accept one or come back with their own potential name.

I grew up in rural Missouri and my grandma always went to an old MFA Oil filling station. It had two gas pumps and a line that rang a bell when it was it driven over to let the attendants know someone had pulled up. The old man there would fill the tank, and while the pump was going, check the oil and clean the windshield. When he was done he'd come back to the car with an invoice you would sign and he'd add the total to your tab with the station to be paid later. It was pretty neat!
