The fact that it was never automated to begin with and just low paid overseas workers feels so realistic it hurts
@breauseph
@breauseph Ай бұрын
It was actually automated. Amazon clarified that the workers in India were basically moderators and AI trainers who reviewed the footage to make sure the transactions were accurate. They discontinued its use because they couldn't get the error rate down - they wanted it to require review 50 out of 1000 times but they were stuck at 700/1000. So TL;DR it was AI but apparently not very good AI.

I mean culturally we used to speculate that the future would or could be robots we were like “oh no what if the robots gain sentience, that’ll be slavery what a moral quandary ,” and we did all that speculative mind-fapping for nothing because it turns out the answer to those questions in reality is a pyramid scheme that pretty much ends in slavery…we can’t solve slavery as an answer to maintaining “ civilization”I mean we probably could if we actually committed to trying it, but humankind can’t seem to do that and we don’t even have real robots to show for it. Which is just darkly absurd and borderline funny because of all the scams to project this image of futurism that’s overly nostalgic and passé. We were the unfeeling machines all along 😂

@@Topgunnder uhh no, it's still bad but its definitely noy worse. one is like pretending that a non existent technology they invented exists while lying completely and using 100% human labor in some kind of scheme to fool people OR they tried to invent yhe technology and debuted it before it was ready and buggy, as you said. Which is very bad obviously but it's not the same thing at all. one sounds like a great Philip k dick short story like the electric dreams adaptation Autofac. The other is more like another shitty product released too early and mishandled like shitty apple and amazon practices we're used to. They've been a hugely unethical company and i don't see it changing any time soon sadly.

I’m a trans guy who lives in a very small appalachian town and I go to a barber who has a confederate flag out front and says weird transphobic stuff all the time but I keep going back because for some reason she genders me correctly the whole time and gives me super gender affirming cuts despite knowing I’m trans and she’s the only person in my town who knows how to cut curly hair 😭

Jarvis is correct, the original idea was the Indian workers would be temporary to help train the algorithm, but the thing about current "AI" models is no one has figured out how to get them stop hallucinating data. It might not even be possible. So Amazon realized they were never going to get past the "training" stage and actually have the AI take over because the AI was never going to be reliable enough to justify the cost of all the cameras and servers and everything to do the job of a minimum wage employee.

I actually worked security for Amazon's Seattle campus back in 2017, and was the body they placed in the new Amazon Go they were opening downtown for the last round of QA testing as well as its grand opening. Watching it in action, I was sure that grocery stores over the next few years were going to try to buy that tech or develop their own to phase out cashiers... this news makes it pretty obvious why that never happened. Doesn't make much sense to get rid of cashiers and put in sensors when you need nearly a hundred times the manpower to fill in the cracks in the tech.

I grew up in rural Missouri and my grandma always went to an old MFA Oil filling station. It had two gas pumps and a line that rang a bell when it was it driven over to let the attendants know someone had pulled up. The old man there would fill the tank, and while the pump was going, check the oil and clean the windshield. When he was done he'd come back to the car with an invoice you would sign and he'd add the total to your tab with the station to be paid later. It was pretty neat!

oh drew gooden talked about that silly food mispronouncer one time in his videos! the "little wooden ball" in particular I remember, and I also picked up calling blueberries "bloobs" exclusively. and nothing else. what a classic i LOVE sirchacha

12:50 - speaking of, there's a barber near me who constantly plays the Joe Rogan Experience, and they're even named for it (on the level that Joe could sue them for making it look like he endorses them if he was aware of them and wanted to) and I'm just like, I've never wanted to be further from a barber

My dude...gas stations in CA are required by law to provide air and water to a customer vehicle for free. The coin box is for show, just ask the attendant.

The tire air pump things are free around here. The gas is more expensive than nearby counties but the air is free and that's convenient as heck

These days, you can pump your own gas in most counties in Oregon (iirc), but there are still attendants at most stations. They changed the restrictions during COVID and it never really went back.

I'm at the beginning of the episode and I already wanna say, I really miss so many of my work friends. It's crazy how you've spent so much time with them, but then you leave that job and now you don't really keep up with them. I think about it them often tho. And then Jarvis mentioned Lil Wayne rapping the ABCs, I think my favorite thing like that is from 'Peso' by ASAP Rocky- "Couple ABCs, bad bitch, double D's. I don't give a F, I told ya I'ma G. A.S.A.P." 😂
