Sometimes when my adhd makes it extremely difficult to do basic tasks I keep a toothbrush, toothpaste and a spit cup by my bed because I might want to brush my teeth but I just can’t go to the bathroom to do it. Went to the doctor recently for my yearly but also requested a blood test cause of this, and everything was in the normal ranges but my b12 was very close to being lower than the normal range so my doctor said that could be the cause and I started taking supplements and I feel a lot better. Even if results come back “normal” it’s good for your doctor to be aware of concerns just in case that could point to it. Before I started taking b12 I could sleep 10 hours and still want a nap in the middle of the day and it was so frustrating cause I needed to study and couldn’t just stop everything and take a nap

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 13 (now 24) and my coworker is starting her freshman year at college, and she said her therapist always told her she did too well in school to have ADHD. When I tell you I HOLLERED “LOL GIRL WTF YOU DEF HAVE IT”… flash forward to last week when she saw a doctor and they diagnosed her officially. I say, if you feel like you have it, you’re still allowed to do all the little neurodivergent tips and tricks to help! There are a lot of great ADHD insta pages and the Huberman lab episode about dopamine is a game changer! for anyone struggling with similar symptoms to jarvis: when your bloodwork comes back normal, i recommend talking to your primary care doctor about wether they think it could be Dysautonomia! I’ve realized over the past 2-3 years of research and reflection that I have autism but I don’t have a diagnosis and if I just said that no one would believe me, but it would make life so much easier if I could cause it’s not like I wanna use it as an excuse for things, but an explanation. Like why a loud restaurant makes me irritated and not wanting to talk anymore for example. The productivity things I deal with and pickiness with food are both things my mom deals with so she at least understands those things but a lot of the things I deal with it would be so much easier to explain if I could explain how it relates to autism but instead I’m just like “yeah idk why I’m like this so weird lol”

@@ellabiddy4741 if you genuinely believe you have autism, self diagnosing is a thing and a lot of people who cant get diagnosed professionally use it as an alternative. generally people in online spaces are pretty accepting of it and wont really doubt you in my experience (unless you come across the wrong people) even if people irl dont take it seriously. when you’re able to, you can by all means get diagnosed cause self diagnosing isnt usually a replacement for getting checked by a professional but it can relieve a lot of the stress of having to explain why you do certain things or act a certain way or having to mask your symptoms

@@ellabiddy4741 dude i relate to everything you said so hard. it took me around the same amount of time of researching to confidently self-diagnose, and although there are definitely still some folks who don't see self diagnosis as valid, id say a vast like 75-90% of the autistic community see's self diagnosis as equally valid to professional diagnosis, especially bc a lot of us have faced ableism ourselves from medical "professionals" just because our autistic traits aren't the exact same as their one distant family member with autism. tbh it took me until hearing a bunch of credible sources (autistic folks and reputable org's) talk about how they saw self-diagnosis as valid to take the step because as a high-masking autistic female the imposter syndrome can be so real. sorry for the novel aha, i just really relate and hope i can maybe help you to feel a bit more accepted by the autistic community. if you wanna chat more about autism stuff feel free to message me on instagram, @goldenoveralls

Hey if its any reassurance, I am a fast drug metabolizer as well and have done a LOT of research on anesthetics during surgery for the same reason! I'm a trans man doing a full binary transition, so surgery has been a big part of my life the last couple years. I found out that the anesthesiologist monitors you for signs of distress (like increased heart rate, etc.) during surgery and if they notice any sign of anything out of the ordinary they'll give you more drugs. Your anesthesiologist would more than likely know you were starting to experience distress before you even knew. Of course, anesthesia awareness can sometimes happen, but your fast metabolism doesn't make it any more likely. There's an anesthesologist named Max Feinstein with a youtube channel by the same name, learning about anesthesia on his channel really helped my surgery anxiety. Now I can just look forward to my gender-affirming surgeries instead of being scared of them.

as someone who just got diagnosed with adhd as an adult, growing up, I thought there was something wrong with me. I considered it a moral failing that I couldn’t do my homework or I forgot my wallet so a friend had to pay for me. Same here. My psychiatrist wanted me to go through my old school reports to find some evidence for signs of ADHD in my childhood. From 1st to 10th grade, literally all of them mentioned some variation of "needs to focus and organize himself better" or "could perform much better if he concentrated more during class". It made decades of failure and sadness come into focus for the first time in my life.

dude i feel the dentistry part so much. i recently had to get cavities filled in four separate appointments, and at the last one i had to keep stopping them to get more numbing medication when they were drilling cuz i could feel it. i also very much felt like a baby but tooth/jaw pain is excruciating. the dentist and the assistant were both like “that’s weird, you should have been fine for a lot longer”, which made me feel more embarrassed but it genuinely hurt so bad

I've been dealing with a really bad period of depression and fatigue lately and this episode couldn't be more timely. Jordan's explanation of how we often carry misplaced guilt over not being able to do things even though it's not our fault and it's already hurting us was really something I needed to hear. Thank you both for always having honest, insightful discussions about mental health - they always make me feel less alone.

Jarvis - this may sound wild but I also deal with every symptom you’ve talked about in this video and past ones where you’ve mentioned it and doctors don’t know what’s up. If you ever figure it out, that might be a victory for both of us. The only thing I’ve figured out with my fatigue is that it is almost guaranteed to happen when I have a stressful conversation, have a panic attack, or do anything that is clearly stressing me out. But fighting that fatigue and controlling it feels impossible. The guilt is so real. I run a small business and it has definitely been impacted by the fatigue as well as my part time job. I also happen to deal with the hunger right after I’ve eaten (makes me think that they’re linked) and that + my ED makes my weight fluctuate constantly. More than just wanting you to feel better, I have a vested interest in your recovery and love when you share your experience with it! We are in this together!!!

jarvis' discussion on fatigue is so familar to other people with chronic fatigue and pain, spoon theory helps explain a lot of fatigue. I can't go to a full day of school and then clean my room the same day, each of those by itself takes all of my spoons, and I i won't get any more spoons until 2 days after, when I've recovered. having constant pain means I need to weigh all of the chores and things I "need" to do, like see friends, go to school, clean my room, take out trash, wash my face, do laundry, I have to sacrifice the "less important" normal human activities for the "more important" ones.

All of the physical feelings Jarvis is describing sound exactly like how my ADHD fueled c-ptsd anxiety manifests. My therapist and I are working on dealing with my body physically feeling like it's dying when it's actually just an adrenal response from panic. Turns out you don't even need a mental stress trigger if it's been an issue for long enough. 🙃 I also thought I had diabetes at first; I even get the tingling limbs.

Not to assume anything about Jarvis's health, but listening to him talk about his normal blood work, sounded a lot lot my own experience in getting diagnosed with fibromyalgia. All of my bloodwork, MRIs, and X-rays have come back normal. I have chronic pain, fatigue, and brain fog. I also get the really awful blood sugar feeling. I've tested my blood sugar when I feel like that, and it is still technically in a normal range for non-diabetics. Speaking of diabetes, if anyone thinks they have diabetes, the four symptoms are increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. Doesn't matter how old you are. My husband was 24 when he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Knowing these symptoms saved my husband from ever experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis, which is life threatening!

Hey boys! Nordic person note on the cold shower/water thing: it's not horrible and unpleasant when you combine it with a sauna. I know saunas are not commonplace on that side of the pond but still. It's very therapeutic, relaxing, and good for your circulation to do a combination of sitting in the sauna & taking a dip in some cold water (which doesn't have to be an ice hole btw)

When Jarvis was talking about the blood tests and how frustrating it is when they're good, I felt it so hard, and I also went: "it's the adhd" again and again, because it is. So many forget that adhd can affect everything from your eyesight to muscle cramps, on top of the stereotypical symptoms. The most annoying for me is the fatigue, because it's such a bizarre fatigue that can't be explained. I can't describe it to people no matter how hard I try, because the way it feels physically is just so weird.

This is my first sad boyz podcast and what Jordan said at 2:20 hit home hard. My life is improving vastly but the chemicals in my brain continue to malfunction. It feels like no matter how great life gets, there’s a massive weight on my shoulders when i try to enjoy things. I’ve been trying to reframe that feeling though, I try to view the undue emotional pain as weight added to an exercise. Life will never be perfect, but if i can someday lose the emotional weight I’ll be So much stronger.

I so so appreciate hearing people I look up to talk about mental health like this - especially relating to ADHD and guilt surrounding productivity. I identified heavily with what Jordan said in the beginning in realising how depressed he's been! I recently moved in with people that I love and changed jobs to something I actually enjoy, and yet I've felt like my entire world has been crumbling around me. I realised recently that because I'm now in a good place with a lot of the central parts of my life, I finally have opportunity to take up the time and space it requires to break down - after the years that it had been building up! I feel that since I've realised this I've been a bit more okay with allowing myself to be depressed. I hope that anyone seeing this comment will be reminded to allow themselves the time and space that it takes to feel - it's essential for all types of mental recovery

Hearing Jordan and Jarvis describe the Spoons Model without knowing that that's what it is is really funny to me for anyone that doesn't know, it's the concept that you get a certain number of spoons in a day and that each task takes some of those spoons. Different tasks take different amounts for different people. When you're out of spoons, that's like your "action points" being spent for the day. (and no there's no reason that it uses spoons, it's just funnier that way)
