I am a wine minimalist. Even though there are millions of different gadgets available for wine I only use my corkscrew a glass. Yes, yes, yes of course I do have a lot of different glasses so I am maybe not a real minimalist but I am not into gadgets. The only thing I use that could be considered a gadget is my Corvin but that’s it. But FOMO or Fear of missing out is a real thing so I went to the place where everyone buys everything these days to find what I did not know I needed in my life. First of all, I am not paid by anyone to review these products and I bought all of them with my own money I am ready to be inspired so let’s have a look at what papa Amazon has to offer ...
Items reviewed:

CHEER MODA Champagner closure

A friend's father is quite arthritic, so the electric opener has been a boon for him. I am guessing it could also be useful for those with limited use of their hands (accident, handicap, etc.). That said, not something I would ever buy. Let's hope it stays that way.

@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine You might not have thought about people with disabilities but that's exactly who is likely going to be purchasing the device. A little bit of thought would have been helpful before speaking, next time consider who might benefit from this device and then reflect on that first. I was a little disappointed with this part of the video to be honest, I do expect more from you and a little more humility because as soon as I saw this device I thought "wow, that's great! My mother in law likes to enjoy a glass of red and so too now my own mother and immediately thought of buying this for them. And then to see you slam it and say useless, I kinda took it to heart and surprised by your lack of consideration". Please do better, be better and think better.

My favourite wine gadget has to be my corkscrew/waiter's friend. Also, man thank you so much for this channel. I'm currently studying for my WSET Diploma in Canada, and I've found your channel both informative, but also really entertaining. I've learned a lot from you, but it doesn't feel like "studying", because you have a fantastic way of stripping away the perimeter pretension and getting right to the practical information at the heart of wine topics.

Morning Konstantin. Great video as always. From all of the gadgets that you tested, one for me is absolutely brilliant and that is the steel ball bearings for cleaning a carafe. I have some lovely carafes that are hellish to clean. These ball bearings really work. I would use less water than you did. They really work. Your favourite glassmaker even produces them. For me they are indispensable.

Really enjoy your videos - especially how you walk us through how you do wine tastings. Look forward to seeing this one!! My wine gadget is - a corker for champagne / sparkling wines. I don’t use it for long term storage (ie overnight) but for helping seal the bottle a bit between pours. Champagne never lasts more than one evening at my house :)

I think my favorite and useful gadget of all of those is the decanter bead cleaner. I do have a few gadgets myself that I like. My wine glass charms are very useful since I have many wine drinkers in my family so they help with not grabbing the wrong glass. I have an aerator and do enjoy it when I don’t want to wait for my decanted wine. Great video! I’m new to the channel and really enjoy your sense of humor.

Very harsh on the Vacu Vin. I use it for BTG in the Restaurant and it certainly helps give an extra day to the wine. It’s not a long term solution like Coravin, but it’s not really meant to be. I use it for fortifieds in the fridge at home as bottles of table wine don’t last a day.

Yeah, I was thinking there will definitely be times you can’t finish a wine in a day. But u are you not keeping the wine long enough or the wine is not so expensive that you have to pull out a Coravin. Vacu vin is a perfect in between.

Hi Konstantin, two things I wasn't convinced about: the 1st was the one that reads the temperature of the wine. For people (probably the majority) who do not have a wine cellar, that would be a good gadget to have. You scored it very low but the rational you gave were a bit poor (I'd accept if you had said the temperature was not correct or it's cheap and doesn’t work, but that wasn't the case). The 2nd is the vacuum cap. I have that device and it makes a MASSIVE difference: before I was able to have a bottle open only for 3-4 days before it would turn vinegar, now I'm able to drink it also 10 days later (no, I don't drink wine every day and I have no intention to😉). Anyway I realise that the only gadget I would like, doesn’t exist yet (a device that removes the labels from the bottles without breaking them).

I appreciate this. It’s natural to want to explore the gadgets as you get into wine (I’m newer to wine appreciation), so have spent more on gadgets that would’ve been better applied to superior wine. Hopefully this will spare some others my mistakes.

Besides adding my voice to those defending the VacuVin (which is a really simple and inexpensive way of making bottles last longer), I really like my glass markers. When we have people over, there's usually a mess of wine glasses, and even if the rest don't care about which one is theirs... I do. They're also good for blind tastings.

The decanter pearls are really good, we've used something similar at home to clean metal and glass. We just have some small stainless steel ball bearings and use vinegar and/or grain alcohol if we have it. The alcohol and acid both act as solvents to loosen any sediments while the ball bearings act as an abrasive. But if it's something you can reach your hand into (like a punch bowl), we just use steel wool for the same effect.

I found an old wine opener in my house in France which was hidden away In a pile of junk left behind by the previous owners who had live in the house in the 1940s. the opener was completely covered in rust but I was able to strip and oil it and it works wonderfully. The opener has a cylindrical metal frame with a corkscrew which is attached to a machined screw which allows you to pull the cork out slowly with a three pronged handle. It's a bit overkill but is very satisfying to use

I use an aerator sometimes, it does the trick when I don't want to use a carafe. I see a lot of people in the comments using vacuvin. A better option is to have some half (0.375) bottles at home with a screw cap, just pour the wine to the brim of the half bottles and you can store them for longer than a vacuvin can. Of course this option doesn't work if you only pour 1 glass of wine from your bottle.

The only gadget I use is the vacuvin. Usually when I'm in wine geek modus and want to compare 2 or 3 bottles. I pick one I'm going to drink right away and want to keep the others waiting for a couple of days. It works for me, so let's agree to disagree on the use 😉. And yes, I know about coravin. It's fine for more expensive wines, but when the gas you put in the bottle costs you more than the wine you took out I think vacuvin is a good alternative. Greetings from Belgium

Try using a Crème Brûlée torch to heat the bottle and then pour ice water on it to cool it. The rubber bands are not needed. Also only cut around the bottle once lightly to score the glass. Once the bottle is cut then a piece of wet sandpaper on a flat surface can be used to flatten and clean the edges. Thanks for the amazing channel. Cheers

Always though the vacu vin helped opened wine to last longer, also found it good for retaining some of the sparkle in sparkling wine. Interested in your point that air has already entered the wine itself. How much of an impact would this have vs contact with air in the bottle if just corked without a vacuum over a day or two? Would a small amount of oxygen in the wine help it develop also?
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe I need to do a trial of Vacuvin to find out. I just do not think that it is very reliable. But I have not tried it for sparkling wine. Oxygen needs to enter the wine in order to have an impact and yes, it can also change the wine for the better but after a day or two most wines start declining in quality in my experience. This also depends very much on how much wine you have already poured (one glass or three) and the storage conditions.

Anyway, I recently invested on a £4 bottle cutter which is so far my best investment - it only made me do some research as I had an old 2009 sassicaia bottle which I didn’t want to throw away. Now - I have cut a few bottles and have even started a herb garden in my kitchen :)..thank you again I would welcome a review on glasses - I told myself I might give myself a treat as I am fully aware the wine taste better with a good quality glass :)

While we are on the subject of gadgets, I've done a number of rounds with my average drinker friends on a metal stick that supposed to help the "aging" of the wine. It's called "Peugeot Clef du Vin," and available on Amazon. I was a skeptic first, then, after a few rounds of blind tastings, most have identified the difference. But, don't follow their guideline of 1 second = 1 year formula. I used 20 seconds for most young reds. I think the copper "dot" at the end of the stick ionizes the wine and somehow releases the flavors.

I find those style aerators really useful. You’re meant to pour into them a lot quicker, too slow and the wine goes straight through without being aerated. It’s great for cheaper bottles or when you don’t want to sit around for an hour or 2 waiting for the wine to decant. Also cheaper, easier to clean and a lot more durable than a nice decanter. I think both options definitely have their place and market

5/5 for a glass cutter that doesn't cut where you want it cut? Really, Konstantin? I mean, really? Why? 😜 My favourite 'gadget' is a steel aerator that's like a funnel with a removable steel filter. It's designed so when you pour the wine through, it sprays out sideways and runs down the inside of your decanter or jug. The filter certainly removes any bits of cork, or sediment, and whilst the fancy aeration bit might not be necessary, it certainly adds to the theatre and ritual of opening and decanting a good bottle of wine.

Hey love your channel, just one thing to point out on the Decanter, it works best when you turn it at an angle and it has a small sif you need to put on the top. I use it to decant into my Class decanter the little sif catches any small particles of cork and sediment. it works really well.

I use the vacuvin. It is the best to keep the wine for a few more days spending just a small amount.

That wine glass to put on top of the bottle and drink directly from it is absolutely hilarious.I will invest on a Coravin soon.By the way Konstantin, had a bottle of Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore 2013 the other day and it was instantly love.

Decanter for 50 cents! Use a larger glass, often “Burgundy” glasses are 600-900 ml, cover with watch-glass after putting 500ml or so, wait the requisite time

Just recently discovered your channel and I'm loving it :). I didn't expect to see Vacuvin among this mostly useless stuff, to be honest. I'm using it for 10+ years now and wouldn't want to miss it. My impression is that it works pretty well, I use it mostly for already quite mature wines we do not manage to empty that night. Without Vacuvin these wines are frequently undrinkable the next day. With Vacuvin we typically still can enjoy them in the next days. Vacuvin and Dropstop are the only "gadgets" I use, apart from the bare necessities as corkscrew, glasses and a decanter/caraffe. Keep up the good work!

@@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine I would love to see a video with side-by-side blind tasting of wine with and without the Vacuvin cork after 3, 5, 7 days! I also believe that Vacuvin works and helps keep the wine intact for a few extra days. Would love to know your expert opinion on this!

This is super helpful and also fun! I see you are not very fond of vacuvin. I use it all the time because I believe, at least, it allows less oxygen in the bottle than just putting back in the cork. What's your best advice when I have to keep the bottle for a day or two?
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine
@KonstantinBaumMasterofWine 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Every (good) wine should keep for two days after you opened the bottle. The wine might develop but this is also interesting. If you want to slow down the process than put the opened bottle in the fridge.

I'd just use a wine label remover instead of that cutter - I've actually added labels to a journal and have enjoyed revisiting it from time to time (saves all that space a bottle takes up too!)

Hi Konstantin, It’s so funny that you got the gadget to cut glass bottles. I had just asked my boyfriend where I could take a bottle of Armand de Brignac I drank with my mom so I could turn it into a vase to remind me of her. Unfortunately, she passed away recently due to Covid. I would be a bit concerned in using it, though because when you used it the bottle didn’t have a nice straight cut all around. Let me know if you use it again and have more success with it, please. I’m like you I prefer to use the regular cork screw and different glasses. I’m actually a sucker for wine glasses. I had a whole collection of Riedel ones in the USA but couldn’t bring them with me. Anyway, the one gadget I love and always use is the foil cutter, because I don’t have the strength to use the cutter that’s part of the wine opener. Thanks and Cheers! 🍷

I am sorry to hear about your mother passing away! I would be careful if the bottle is important to you and rather keep it the way it is. Champagne bottles are thicker and therefore harder to cut and the material of the AdB bottle might make it even harder.
