I'm not sure if I can adequately express how grateful I am that you made this video. I am a retired disabled veteran and for over 20 years I have dreamed about putting together a program to address a critical need in the veterans community. Every time I have tried to revive this project I run into the same two roadblocks that have shut me down every time. First, people seem to think it takes a huge personal cash investment to start a nonprofit. Second, they think you need at least a masters degree in nonprofit business administration plus 10 or more years experience. I'm also going to binge watch your videos and try to get a few other veterans I served with to do the same.

Overall you have given good information, well organized. Thank you. I have experience with city funding of arts organizations. Developing positive relationships with employees who manage your funding, maintaining positivity with your nonprofit competitors who are favorites of the city decision makers, are important factors that cannot be ignored. The 'yes' answers to dollar requests are granted primarily for political reasons to friends. I would call this a 'con' in more ways than one. Also, in my city, we have a large umbrella nonprofit comprised of wealthy individuals that is predatory about rounding up as many family foundations as they can to manage their intake and disbursement for them. That adds another level of bureaucracy that siphons the available money for project activities proposed by smaller nonprofits, and functions in the same political way.
@AmberMelanieSmith4 жыл бұрын
Government funding is, in my opinion, the hardest - so much paperwork and bureaucracy!
@gloriayah6893 жыл бұрын
First I have say that Amber really knows the business and gives excellent advice. However, I do agree with you Catherine that there is a lot of politics going on and it seems the same people always gets the grants based on who they know. This is really a shame because smaller or lesser know orgs get left out even though they really put in the work.

I think our Heavenly Father for sparing my life and three other family members the cat and two dogs would not be alive if we hadn't talked about what to do if a tornado comes. I've lost my place to live my only vehicle and it's been very tough trying to start life all over with no savings and being disabled. My prayers are with all disaster victims

Your 100% correct Amber. Great video. I am going to subscribe to hear more of your content. When you receive any form of federal funding, IRS audits are very strict, can last 1-3 months. And often times, you need a separate dedicated staff member as you stated that understands all funding regulations, policies, and compliance procedures and guidelines or a few current staff members cross trained and well versed on government funding. There are a lot of documents required to obtain the funding, manage, administrate, and to maintain the funding. Having a solid administrative infrastructure and process of financial viability, accountability, and management is key. Taking grant writing classes is essential to have an overall understanding regardless of the key staff member or staff members put in place. And there are professional & proven grant writing companies for hire for specific industries also. The only thing I would add, specifically as it relates to women, minorities, and disadvantaged businesses, becoming certified is a good in road to getting in front of points of contact within corporations, government, state, & local agencies and to become more familiar and involved with organizations and key staff of organizations, to be placed on those agency, donor, foundation, and corporate funding lists. Also, paying for corporate sponsorships to events, gets you in the room to network, meet, and speak to other corporate sponsors that are in the habit of donating to non profits & causes.

@AmberMelanieSmith2 жыл бұрын
Whether you go the business or nonprofit route, you can still do programming for kids! Nonprofit status is all about the legal and tax structure you'll be using - as a nonprofit, you can collect tax deductible donations and get grants, but you're run by a Board of Directors. In a business, you may or may not have a board, but you cannot collect tax deductible donations.

Hello Amber...I actually don't know where to start. I was impacted by the feral cat population the past few years. I stepped up.and was feeeding, TNR, medical needs for this feral cat colony in my apartment complex. I then had a vision to purchase a large piece(5 to 10 acres)e of land, put a cat proof fence around the WHOLE area , the area will have lots of trees, a creek just nature. And then start accepting feral cat colonies who are living at risk, no longer wanted where they currently live, etc..I would have a vet on property who would spay euter all incoming cats. I'd put feeding centers throughout the property, along with a walking path. People can come and walk through for free but donations are accepted. I would run solely on donations. I really think this project would be successful and be a big hit. How would I even start????? Thank u! My name is Melanie too!

I understand It's unethical expect the grant writer to get paid after the grant has been granted. Okay. I can see how that's unethical, just as hiring someone to do fundraising and paying them a commission percentage based on the money they raise. Okay. Now, on my end for example. What can you recommend me to do, in order to not have to take all the risk of paying upfront for a service, without any guarantees that I will have any positive results?

There's always a risk you won't get a grant, regardless of how good a grant writer is, because you can't know what other projects or organizations you're competing against at that time and what the funder's preferences are going to be. You can try to write grants yourself to avoid losing money on paying a grantwriter if it doesn't work out, or bake in an acceptable amount of risk into your budget.

For business loans or grants, definitely check out what your government has available, or if you are doing a social enterprise, places like Acumen!

Hi Amber. I am an inventor who developed a much-needed technology that can impact on one notable world health advocacy - the fight against iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). I am looking for philantrophic sponsorships/partnerships for said technology's cost-efficient scale-up production and donation worldwide to the intended beneficiaries - the most iodine deficient countries. I contacted several philantrophic groups and offered collaborations/partnerships. However they were unresponsive. Can you give some useful advice or recommend a philantropist who is approachable/contactable, and who might be interested on the above-mentioned endeavour for a cause?
