People tell me I'm crazy to want to help the homeless but I feel It's something I have to do being an ex-drug addict myself and homeless for more years than I care to remember and they say to do something your passionate about. I watched my life slip by, before my eyes and realized I didn't have the knowledge or the money it takes to change my future but I think that this is what I was born to do, and until you walk in their shoes how do you know how to help them. But all never know until I try.

Me and my philanthropic friends do challenges and matching. The challenges make it fun. With the matching one of us makes a donation to our particular interest's foundation and then all of us in the circle match so that the others will then support their own philanthropic efforts. It becomes a social thing and takes the importance off donation for status and instead results in a diverse blend of causes important to our members all receiving support. We also attend all of the major gala events and always buy a premium table for the group so these events become part of our social calendar.

amber, i wonder if you can answer the following; if i'm running an after school arts program for kids, and i bring in outside teachers from the community (could be professional artists, graffiti or sign artists etc), are those individuals able to write off some type of fair market value of the services they are providing on their own taxes? i'm trying to figure out if i need to pay these folks handsomely to entice them to teach my kids, or if there's a way to encourage them to work for a smaller fee than they might otherwise, with some type of write off available to them? many thanks, your content is absolutely invaluable for this never before non profit owner.
@AmberMelanieSmith5 ай бұрын
Hi! Unsure where you're located but most of the time volunteer time is not able to be written off. You could find donors to offer scholarships / offer an honorarium, or even just create a really awesome volunteer program they love to be a part of anyway! The research doesn't support the idea that people give/volunteer primarily for tax breaks anyway, so I think there are other ways to inspire support!

Hi Amber, I'm working on building a children's museum in northern Israel (under served population and a new concept for this country--though there are many great museums). The thing I loved the most about this video is that doing a smaller fundraiser is, yes, a lot of work but it can also serve to get the word out. (Plus, we're in early stages and I've been funding all the start up costs alone so far!) So would you say that a smaller fundraiser (getting $100-$1000 donations for example) is also a kind of marketing campaign? Thank you for putting this all out there!
@AmberMelanieSmith4 жыл бұрын
I would definitely say that. You can also combine fundraising with raising awareness about what your cause does to inspire people with your story. My org just wrapped up an event this past weekend where we equipped families to volunteer together and they donated to our organization in exchange for special materials to help us cover the costs. It was more about getting our mission out to people than raising money (we didn't raise much), but focusing on inspiring people to do good together as a family meant we got some good press for it too!

Best laid plans: event fundraisers are a lot of work and risky! I manage a farmers market. Our big event fundraiser last year was a pie contest at the market, with the pies auctioned off at the end (hopefully fit around $20 each). We did all the weeks of work and then when the auction was just about to start, the skies opened and the market closed due to a severe storm in five minutes. Most of the pies were sold for a dollar each, so…. That was not the plan at all!

Non-profit advisors always talk about 'building relationships with affluent donors' but I don't understand the process of doing that? Is it as simple as writing an email to these donors to introduce yourself or is there some standardised approach to forming a relationship with donor bodies?
@AmberMelanieSmith3 жыл бұрын
This is such a great question and something that mystified me for a long time too (and to some degree, still does!). There's not a 'standard' approach - those donors are still human and need human connection and sense of meaning too! - it's more about meeting as many people as you can and asking those people to introduce you to other people. Building a strong donor base is about that social connection, then building relationships and keeping folks engaged year-round.

Thanks for the upload. Re a donating corporation matching an employee's donation. How does that work? I am assuming that, by the term 'employee', an employee of the donating company is meant. Is it that the donating company's employees approach their management with ideas about other cause-related activities they did outside of work on their free time and ask their employee to match their efforts? ... or is it a matter of the nonprofit's employee volunteering services to the donating corporation? Please confirm or clarify. Thanks
@AmberMelanieSmith4 жыл бұрын
It can mean what you described, however, what I am talking about is when a company has an already-established matching program where the company's leaders have set up a program officially to allow charitable donations to be matched.

I would agree with events. It requires too much for most organisations however its always an option to encourage supporters to fundraise for you in an event they're enthusiastic to hold. A word on government services procurement.( eg your organisation helps alcoholics, you apply gov tender for services to help alcoholics)Relying on this is a surefire way to guarantee the future death of most organisations. A bigger commercial organisations will undercut and you'll find yourself high and dry.... think several times before tying your mission with a funded service of local government. It needs to be planned for very carefully if its not going to bite you on the ass later.

What database or management software would you recommend for a nonprofit organization?
@AmberMelanieSmith3 жыл бұрын
There are lots of options out there and it really depends on your budget, the features you need, the size of your donor base, etc.!

Amber, can a US based 501C3 spend all their collected donations abroad? This is in ref to an education charity for underprivileged children
@ziakhan48532 жыл бұрын
By abroad I mean spending internationally (other countries)
@AmberMelanieSmith2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, not sure if there's anything about the percent spent abroad, or international finance law stuff - I recommend talking to an accountant to be sure.
