I purchased my P17 about a year ago when I purchased my very first .22LR Handgun and after shooting this gun for about 4 months, I was so satisfied with it's performance, I purchased another one and I now have two great 22LR Handguns! I now have 4 22LR Handguns and a 22LR Rifle and I shoot them at my LGR here in Florida in the Hot summer and I joined a outdoor range in the Fall/Winter months! I still have my Glock 48 but at my age (78) I had to make several adjustments and this P17 works great for my needs! What a great shooting gun!

I bought mine about 2 1/2 months ago and love it! Completely anecdotal, but compared to 3 other of my most recent pistols it is a close second to the most reliable of those handguns. I have a Taurus TX 22 that has magazine issues (I plan on cleaning those to see if reliability improves) a Taurus GX4 that did pretty good with most of the regular 11 round mags with only a few problems in first 300 rounds (the 15 round ones just wouldn’t feed, one 11 round ones needs cleaning too) and a Glock 19 clone (PSA slide on a Combat Armory frame) which I no issues with in 300 rounds. The P17 only had one issue being dirty.
Own the p17 and really like it. Have recently seen a lightweight +6 mag extension that is available now for the gun. If it functions properly i think this would make the p17 an even better self protection trail pistol. Have ordered one and look forward to function testing it, even if it doesn't work reliably i'm only out 20 bucks either way. Time will tell

I’ve handled this in the store and would like to pick up 2-3 at the same time as well when I find them. As a Glock guy and regarding the 48 specifically, I love the pistol but for the exact reasons you mentioned the benefit of the trigger guard mag release on this in your videos, the 48’s HUGE mag release is a real problem for the reduction in frame size. I’ve gone back to my 26 for trusted carry until I figured out the best way to dremel that down to the right usable shape. Have begun but it still manages to pop out the mag during carry. Have to find the right balance between usable and hard to push - not there yet.

A couple things that might explain the reliability of both of my P17's. That reliability is with CCI Mini-Mag, Stingers and Velicitors ammo. Less reliable with bulk, box ammo and not so good with Browning BRP. I also dry lube all of my firearms with Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide. The dry lube not only doesn't attract dirt it seems to shed or reduce carbon buildup. 22LR is pretty dirty so I think this is a big benefit. But until I can buy two pistols, dry lube one, wet lube the other, and then do extended data collection, that is just my hypothesis. Good luck and please report back here your results, good or bad. You are right to be careful. Cheap semi-auto 22LR pistols from ANY manufacturer are always hit or miss. These guns are made to be plinkers and trainers, not as serious self defense weapons. That's why QC is always spotty on them. If you want to rely on a 22LR pistol for self defense, you have to get a revolver or a heavier high quality semi-auto like a Browning Buckmark, Ruger 22/45, etc. Otherwise, just get a lightweight centerfire pistol that you know will always function when you need it. I say this coming from a LOT of experience with semi-auto 22LR pistols AND shooting them with CCI Mini Mags, Velocitors, Stingers, etc.

Nice set-up. For me personally I'll pack the extra ounces for a 9 or 40. After all, I'm riding for exercise #1, and scenery #2. I rode by a mountain lion 6' off the trail once, and a 22 wouldn't have been very comforting IF it had given chase.

I prefer to dedicate weight and bulk to trauma kit. Mountain Man Medical review forthcoming. I take some comfort in focusing more on the med kit by the surprising effectiveness of 22LR. I knew poachers in my youth that humanely took deer out to 100 yds with a 22, witnessed many large animals dispatched with a 22 pistol, and there is a world record griz on display in a SW Wyoming rest area that was killed by a 22. For cats and a pack of wolves, I like the extra ammo I can have on hand. I do have some videos coming on a 10mm, though. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4iwoKOwrZibnac

@@AmbGun Amb, I am an experienced outdoorsman and the relying on a 22LR for dangerous animal protection will get you killed or maimed for life. The whole point of carrying is to prevent being injured in the first place. Yes, med kits are very important. But they should only be needed as a last resort, not to use in place of stopping power. Poaching a deer has nothing to do with stopping an angry 500 lb bear or a determined mountain lion.
@AmbGun2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnB-dr8sk Here in WY, most outdoorsmen are injured or killed from falls. Hence the crucial importance of an IFAK. And for me, mountain biking, I've had quite a few hard crashes...one where a tree branch stabbed me in the abdomen...luckily just the edge. I've seen Grizzly from a distance, but no encounters. Watched a mountain lion pursue a deer. And seen a wolf. For a wolf pack, I think I'd prefer a 22LR with 100 rounds rather than a 10mm with 11 rounds. Maybe not ideal for bear, but plenty of trappers have humanely dispatched bear with a 22...and then there is that woman who killed a world record griz with a 22...of course maybe there are some who were eaten trying to defend with a 22. I’m with you on carrying something with more punch. Don’t be like my friend Bill. He had his 10mm with critical duty +p ammo. Hollow points are fine where penetration isn’t necessary like on a human. An animal with 6-10” of fat before you hit muscle and then bone before finding internal organs. Bill unloaded 12 rounds with maybe 7 actually hitting the bear. Bill survived but needed several surgeries to reattach his face and scalp. The 10mm would have been fine if he was using FMJ. He also needed more shooting time and training. Almost half his shots missed. I can say for a fact, a 22lr directly into the nose of a brown bear will send that bear away. If your lucky and that shot travels up the nasal passage it could kill the bear as it entered the skull and skipped around in there. Moral of the story, use proper ammunition and be accurate with that weapon. And yes, there’s hotter 22lr ammunition you can buy that are supper sonic and can do more damage.

@@JohnB-dr8skYou are talking straight out your ass. A 22 lr works fine .. especially on cougars. Cougars are extremely easy to kill and black bears aren’t too hard either. Stopped charging bears in Ak 3 times. 22 is fine for lower 48 , although I would like something a bit bigger if I knew I was gonna be fighting bears. If on occasion you carry a 9, you might also want to consider a Taurus G2c in .40 S&W. It weighs 22 oz - almost twice that of the Kel-Tec, but still very light. The Kel-Tec fully loaded should weigh about 14 oz, and the G3c, with only 10 +1 round capacity, about 28 oz. The difference when defending yourself against a bear, however - ~100 ft-lbs muzzle energy vs ~400 ft-lbs (varies with the cartridge) - might make the additional pound worth toting.
@AmbGun3 жыл бұрын
I do sometimes carry the Keltec PF9 which weights 12.8 ounces empty. Very light for a 9mm. For a true bear cartridge, I'd be inclined to go 10mm...or, as I do when hiking in Griz country, a 45-70 Guide Gun. But for mountain biking, I prefer to carry extra trauma gear. But as I back off a bit on my motocross inspired riding intensity, I may back off on the IFAK and favor more firepower. Check out my "How the 22 Wins" video. @@AmbGun shot about 200rds today. 50 suppressed. Barrel was so fouled, it was keyholing and throwing rounds everywhere. No amount of scrubbing would get it out. It's sitting in the vise with an ear plug in the muzzle, full of Butch's bore shine. Two hours of hoppes foam soak did nothing.

When they do these studies comparing the effectiveness of .22LR to that of 9mm, are they comparing firearms with similar barrel lengths? I could possibly see a .22LR rifle with an eighteen inch barrel being nearly as effective as a 9mm. I can also imagine many people defending their homes with a Ruger 10/22 or the corresponding Marlin rifle. When the barrel length is similar and short, I have a harder time imagining that the comparison would be as even. If I were getting something like this, I think I'd rather have a longer barrel. Maybe my own feelings aren't seen anywhere else, but I would imagine that both this pistol and the PMR-30 would sell well with an option for a seven or eight inch barrel.
@AmbGun3 жыл бұрын
40 ft pounds is the lethal boundary. Barrel length does help, but it looks like the right cartridge is much more important. CCI Velicitors and Stingers topping the list... www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/2011graphs+/22ME.html

For the naysayers and caliber queens 🤮 ... One-shot, and the cow drops: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGPSemebnpuBjcU 22 rimfire: super inexpensive per round, and fun to shot. Just practice shot placement and quick follow-ups. Stick with a 40 grain solid nose for good penetration. Prior to loading rounds into any magazine readied for concealed carry or home defense use, inspect each round that: -- the case rim has no imperfections, -- the fit between bullet and case is solid and without wobble. For concealed carry, would also recommend changing out rounds monthly, just in case jostling while walking has affected primer distribution in the case rim. Monthly is also good opportunity to test out those concealed carried rounds at the range :) Make note of the box and lot number from which your carry rounds originate. And then ... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRATICE !!!

Hello, does p17 have automatic fall insurance? or only external maul insurance? Is there a risk that it will go off in a fall?
@AmbGun3 жыл бұрын
External manual safety is pretty much it. I wonder if anyone has drop tested it with the safety off...I wonder just how robust and reliable the trigger sear is all by itself. Given the light trigger, I use the safety....I sure wouldn't try to holster it without the safety on.

My greatest concern for carrying ANY semi-auto 22LR are duds. Just way too many bad primers even in CCI Mini Mags. If a bad guy is running up on you with a butcher knife at close range and you get a click when it should go "bang" it could cost you your life. Yes, a centerfire can have a bad primer, but it's extremely rare. Yes, clearing drills are essential to know, but why handicap yourself with a semi-auto rimfire? An ultra lightweight alternative is a Kel Tec P32 with a 10+1 mag. 11 rounds of Underwood 32 ACP Defender rounds that put out more power than a short barreled 22 Mag and penetrate 16" of ballistics gel. And it can be concealed anywhere on your person including in your pocket.
@AmbGun2 жыл бұрын
My experience with 22 rimfire reliability (using CCI Mini-Mag) finds quality 22LR as reliable, if not more, than centerfire. Before 2020, my Project Appleseed Ruger 10/22 rifle digested 10-20,000 rounds per year doing AQTs (sometimes in my own hands, often in the hands of students) with no ammo related malfunctions. A couple years ago, we experienced lots of 5.56 blown primers with Hornady Frontier...often causing the AR's to malfunction when the primer cup debris prevents bolt head lockup. At the very least, I think top quality 22LR is more reliable than bulk purchased centerfire. Perhaps premium centerfire cartridges like Hornady Critical Defense would eeek out an advantage.

Cci ammo has proven to me to be at least as reliable as any centerfire cartridge. To suggest another shooter" will find out the hardway " reeks of arrogance. Is it possible that you're the less experienced shooter? I've had excellent service using CCI Ammo. I can assure you I'm far from inexperienced shooting a variety of weapons. Ive found the caliber and gun you can hit the target with more often than not is the best caliber to use. To each their own. My comment is based on my personal experience. In no way am I suggesting what is best for you.

GWrap is a risky technique. Gunfighting is kind of a risky activity. As far as I know, the Gwrap Dojo guys have not accidentally shot themselves (I think they use airsoft on the mat). I have experimented with the technique many times with dry fire and training laser. Doing live fire Gwrap with the P17 is easy enough. Centerfire you definitely need to cinch down on the slide...I've done life fire GWrap quite a bit with the Mossberg MC2c....longer slide/barrel means there is plenty of room for the GWrap grip. I've only done it using gloves to prevent getting bit by the slide/barrel lock up. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZqlaKyNqNalpc0

Meaning some of the most innovative firearms engineering on the planet. KelTec started the 380 pocket pistol craze back with the P3AT that was blatantly copied by Ruger for the LCP. The PF9, with it's exceptional rounds per size & weight, was well in advance of the modern micro 9's. There is no backpack carbine quite like the SU16c. I adore the high end Desert Tech MDR, but I found the RDB not only a more affordable fighting bullpup, but a superior one for The Ambidextral Gunfighter. The P50 looks awesome, although I'm more interested in seeing a carbine version of it to compete with FN's PS90. I do wish someone like Sig or BCM would buy out KelTec so that we'd see more polished implementions of their engineering genius.
