CDI = Capacitor Discharge Ignition. My guess is that the capacitor itself is failing because it is underrated for the rate of change of voltage Dv/Dt. If accessible, the capacitor could be replaced but the circuit is probably potted in resin.

Have a settling tank between the shallow well and the holding tank. Or, make that sump pump in the shallow well float.
@emerybarg6424
@emerybarg6424 Ай бұрын
For a sediment filter…. Add a settle tank. Your filtered water goes into the settle tank and let it sit. Then you pump that into your consumption tank. You will eventually have to muck out the settle tank, but you should get years of use before you need to do that.

Riley. I used to be a military generator mechanic. The reason you did not have oil pressure is because the engine does not produce oil pressure when the engine is not running. You can ignore the fault indicator panel for the oil pressure at the beginning of start up. The generator should also have a safety shut off switch that will shut down the generator if you have low oil pressure to protect the engine. Hope this helps.

Diatomaceous earth as used in swimming pool filters really work. You could simply use a swimming pool filter. Not the small one but what we call a sand filter. When the sand gets dirty you simply backwash the filter to clean it. Most pool pumps run daily for 5 years before most people replace it's sand.

I might even go so far as to suggest a coarser sand for pre-filter followed by the cartridge filter you're currently using.. a significant consideration is making certain the pump you're using can push the water through all of that filtration.
@TheFarrryan
@TheFarrryan Ай бұрын
@@ToeKneeBee725slow sand filter tanks are normally top feed , so the pump would be open ended . The water would then flow through the sand bed and be be collected below . If the tank was placed higher than the storage tank, gravity would allow it to run in to be treated further by the ozone disinfection process already mentioned. Basically small scale principle of a water treatment plant.

Riley, I worked on heavy equipment most of my career. Servicing engines in the winter is never fun. You may be using multiviscosity oil. This type of oil is ONLY multivis under operating temp. My suggestion would be to run the engines prior to oil change. This allows the additives in the oil to " thin" to the point it will flow. Instead of waiting for thick syrup to drain, the oil will thin to the point it will flow. Also, as an added benefit, the oil will pick up the settled contaminants lurking in the low spots in the engine. The oil additives that make oil multiviscosity are akin to molecular sized coil springs. In the summer when the oil gets hot, the coils contract, causing the oil to get thicker. In the winter the coils expand causing oil to get thinner. This happens at operating temp. Even though these additives are microscopic, the moving parts in the engine cleave these coils. The detergents in the additives package pick up the contaminants. The oil eventually wears out. This info may help in your matainance process.

Remember the 3 stage water filter thing we used to make for school projects, with sand gravel and charcoal. Those things are super effective and can be built to a larger scale. Fill a barrel with the materials and hook it up before the storage tank. It fits all your criteria effective, no electricity and fully DIY. It won't work for the microbes, but it will filter all the debres out.

You can do that with trees intentionally Riley, it's called girdling.. You score thru the trees bark all the way around tree for about 6" to a foot ( small diameter vs larger) vertically to cause tree to dry out well before you harvest tree. It will allow it to dry out and season in place greatly reducing weight and decreasing time spent cutting and seasoning conventionally. PS you can push that Jeeps roof up just using people power, and if needed put a 2x4 prop post in place to stop it collapsing. Get some of that ZIP tape on any creases to waterproof it enough to stop dome lights shorting or catching fire

To get sediment out of the well, we used to develop our wells before we started using them. To develop your well, you can either blow down compressed air and try to blow out all the sediment that's in the bottom of the well and in the well screen (if you have a well screen) or you could pump three well volumes (at the highest pump rate you can) out of your well and that usually gets the sediment out of the bottom of the well and from the well screen. I'm a retired hydrogeologist. Mostly installed wells to take samples for contamination but sometimes for domestic use and mostly in WA and ID.

16:58 for your sediment issues, I can think of two ways to deal with it: 1) put a spacer on the pump that a) keeps it up off of the bottom, and b) causes it to pull in water from the sides and above. You could use your 3D printer for fast prototypes, then make it in brass since that will make it antimicrobial. Or 2) make a set of traps or lochs to allow just the water to overflow and the sediment to settle out of the water. It would be pretty easy to design and build out of concrete with an opening to remove the build up. This could easily be put in the ground between the dug well and the tank. The first would use no more power than you are currently using, but you’d still likely need a filter for the 5-10% that still got through as it was too well mixed with the water. The second would possibly need a pump added depending on the elevation change between the two. If there is even an 18” drop, it should be plenty as you are only really wanting the water that overflows the last loch anyway. Hope that works or inspired an idea!
@mattlane7888
@mattlane7888 Ай бұрын
I’ve seen the second option work very well with above ground spring water systems. Using only gravity feed from elevation change with a series of 55 gal drums as sediment traps. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge on this as well!

Sand filters work great. You just need to skim the top top every once and a while. My Dad made one when I was younger because the regular style filters would block up and would need cleaning/replacing every week or so. He mounted it on top of the clean water tank and it just worked off gravity. He used a smaller tank, maybe 1000L, put rocks on the bottom, then smaller rocks on top of those then finally sand on top. The bore water was pumped up to the top of the sand filter, filtered through the sand and a pipe was connected at the bottom of the sand filter that feed into the clean water tank. Super simple and very affective.

It is nice you two make good use of your various tools to make practical things for your connivence. The pipe under the plow blade was a game changer and will make plowing snow a bit more fun. Blessings to you folks.

cleaning up the well water. When you put the underground connection, dig extra holes and sink a trio of 55gal food safe plastic barrels in line, one after the other. Use the barrels as settling tanks. Usen insulated lids, so you can suck out the dirt every year. You could even design it that the entire barrel could be lifted out if you wanted to make the las barrel a filter with charcoal and sand.

Another nice video! But a word to the wise: letting a fuel tank (in your military generator) sit empty--especially as temperatures outside change from warm to cold--is a great way to get water in the tank. Warm air has moisture in it. Cooling the metal of the tank, as winter proceeds, or even from warm days to cool nights, forces that moisture to condense on the inside of the fuel tank. It forms beads of water which eventually join & run down to the bottom of the tank. Then you add fuel, the water gets into it, and eventually overwhelms the water filter (you DO have a water filter on the fuel system, don't you?), and prevents the engine from running well, or from running at all. The solution is keeping the fuel tank full of fuel (or at least half full), and regularly servicing the fuel/water filter system. If you don't run the fuel down to empty regularly, and rarely use that generator, then you run into challenges with algae forming in the fuel tank, which will eventually gum up the works and stop fuel flow. There are chemicals to put into the fuel to prevent that from happening. Read a blog or two about diesel fuel storage & winter-proofing. If the weather gets REALLY cold, and you've got diesel fuel purchased in the summer, it won't have the blend of chemicals that will help prevent it from gelling in the cold, which keeps it from flowing. You've got to stay on top of diesel fuel. Also, before testing any engine, diesel or gasoline or propane, always check the oil level before starting it. Even if someone else (a "pro") has set it up for you. Murphy will reach out & bite off-grid people just as fast as on-grid folks. Keep up the great work!

As mentioned by others, a simple sand barrel that you run the water through to catch the big stuff works really efficiently. All you need to do every once and awhile is scoop out the top couple inches of dirty sand and put some new. This worked for my dad's solar water system really well.

For the sediment problem you need 2 things. First a sand filter and the second thing is a Neodiummagnet for the Iron in your collectes water. Both dont use electricity.

Absolutely love watching your channel, all the improvements you are constantly making are encouraging to keep me do the same. However, the best part of these videos is watching Oliver as he grows up. Keep up the good work and know us less fortunate individuals not living in north Idaho are envious. I often spend time on the Pend Oreille River, which is nearly as satisfying, however living there would be a dream come true. Thanks, always look forward to your next adventures! BE SAFE!

I used a simple contraption for an aquaponics set up to drop out sediment. A cylinder shaped container with the water inlet on the bottom angled to mix the water in a circular motion. The outlet was near the top and came in through the cylinder to be in the center. All the sediment would drop out, allowing clean water to exit on top. Periodically drain the sediment on the bottom through a drain. Simple

Hey Riley, I'm thinking about a filter bank like you'd use on a whole-house water filtration system. That way the canisters can be changed when they get tired.

Sediment can be taken out using gravity. Pump to an intermediate holding tank, let it sit, then to the final tank from the top half of the intermediate tank. Pump the sludge every so often.

Make a dyi filter charcoal cheese cloth sand cheese cloth and pea gravel to filter the sediment this can be done with a pvc pipe or a drum. Pump water into filter and then it exits clean to your storage tank.

The sediment can be removed by using an intermediate tank or barrel. Just pump the water into the barrel with the pipe aimed at and angle to create a swirl effect. This gives the sediemnt time to drop out. Once the barrel is full the water should be pretty clear of sediment.

you should consider running an electrical line from your compressor to the shop switch it in the shop or if need be, add a three way switch.

For the sediment issue maybe consider a conical tank. Example -Think beer fermentation tank when the yeast settles. Pump the water into the conical tank. Give it time to settle and then pump the clean water into your holding tank. Flush sediment from conical tank with large valve at the bottom. Love the channel and excellent content.

RE: your printed squeegee, I have one that looks nearly identical, except that it's for a computer screen. There's some fuzzy brush stuff glued or at least attached to, the scraper edge. Just make 4 or 5 passes across your screen to rid it of dust!
