You have to know the back story of these lyrics to understand the meaning of them, and also to understand the direction that Disturbed took with their cover of such an iconic tune of 50 plus years ago. The song was written by Paul Simon I'm 1963, after a dream he had. The dream consisted of what he described as 10k people, all "worshiping their neon-god," which at that time was television, the greatest technology of that era. It was a warning to future generations. Now fast forward to 2015, the year that this cover was released. Where the original song by Simon and Garfunkel was one of caution, Disturbed's version is one of anger, that the warning (original) was not heeded, hence the true meaning of "talking without speaking/hearing without listening." Think of where the technology has gone since 1963 and how much it controls our lives, nor the other way around. No matter how many times I hear it, it chills me to the core every single time.

Yeah, it gave me goosebumps many times. I know Disturbed from long before this so I know how hard they can go. I had heard Simon and Garfunkel sing this song and maybe one other group cover it (but I don't remember who that was). This cover is MEMORABLE. The song is more important today than when it was written (and it was important back then!). David has done some REALLY HARD songs before, this one he almost coasted along in comparison. But the power he puts behind these vocals give the song a new twist here. A BRILLIANT fifty-year-old song, updated for the times. AMAZING. :)

I am an Interpersonal Communication major, and this song encapsulates the problems we have as humans in how we do or do not communicate with each other. I get chills and my eyes well up in tears every single time I listen to this song- and I've heard it many hundreds of times since it's release. I actually weep when I see the live version they performed on Conan O'Brien's show. David Draiman's performances are always stunning, but that one simply breaks me. I absolutely love this song and I feel watching it and especially these reaction videos can actually help us break the silence. Watch enough people's reactions and you start to be able to observe when people's emotions change from the everyday feelings to those of happiness or sadness etc. I feel if we can read people emotions better we can start interacting better and break out of the everyday humdrum and really appreciate others more . I've see hundreds of these types of videos on this song and am finding I can spot the subtle changes in people's facial and body language and if applied to real life people like family or friends the conversations we have tend to be more important to us as we're not taking others for granted like we did before. I'm finding I'm listening more intently and understanding others pain or happiness or loneliness much better. Isn't that basically what the songs about? My interpretation of the song The Sound of Silence. This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the perspective of the awakened. This song was originally recorded by Simon & Garfunkel back in the late 60’s. They were more like an easy folk music pair. The song originally was about the silence about the Vietnam war. People never spoke of it & even condemned it, yet so many of our heroes were lost in that war. There was no ticker tape parades for them when are soldiers returned like previous wars, only criticism. Remember that was when the draft was going on & a lot of men didn’t have a choice back then. When our soldiers came back from the war no one would speak of it. There is another video out of this song with actual footage of our soldiers at war. Whether we believe the war was right or wrong we still should praise the soldiers who lived thru it. I know, I was from that generation. I lost several friends from it defending our freedom & I also lost a husband to PTSD after the war because of the way he was treated when he came home.

The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake. Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening. They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made." The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government. As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

This song fits even more today. The original flash of the neon light was the TV. A disconnect of people. No one sharing. Connecting. Now, I feel it's the internet, the negative things in it, the TOTAL disconnect of society and family. People hide behind the silence of it all. Texting. No phone calls. One could NOT speak out without major consequences (like being threatened of your life for speaking out.) Comedians could get away with it in sarcasm, and through music, the "messages" could not be stopped...In that time communication was very bleak with only fuzzy radio, and fuzzy tv...that's it...So when musicians (Bands) became very popular/famous and millions would hear...They became powerful and a serious threat as influential to the masses to change, by demanding equality, freedom, revealing hypocritical religions (neon God they made) etc...The population always knew music's truth...but remained silent out of fear, of retaliation, disfranchisement, so no one dared (other than fans stereotyped as hippies and Blacks that did protest and riot against the establishment for change)...Musicians (bands) were always broken up due to their mass influence, through suspected mysterious ways, from death of a featured performer, to plane crashes, overdoses etc..by breaking them up in ways equal to that of "looking like an accident"...The biggest protest amongst humanity, (in that time mind you) was the technology of people talking without speaking, and hearing without listening (the seeds planted as you slept...but one's eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night...(and your life)... removing the true sounds of silence, considered free will...People were sent to nut farms and destroyed for voicing aloud of so...Although it does fit differently today with texting...The writing on subway walls was like tenement halls in that time, it was very much like bumper stickers, or hallmark sayings...with lots of WISDOM and common sense that came from the poor and oppressed and was their only way to speak out truths in protest...In spite to stop the messages of truth in war through music...it will always survive to carry its messages that remain and echo in the wells of silence... see the official version...

this is a copy of the original, but my opinion is disturbed is one of my favorite versions of this song and I am happy that people are seeing and hearing this amazing version of "the sound of silence" (you are a beautiful woman) and keep up the amazing videos!

I don’t think I can check out Pentotonix version I don’t think I could ever be unbiased. Disturbed is the best version ever and David’s voice is the only voice to carry this song instead of 5. I’ll try to keep an open mind though.
